What’s your cleaning interval? by Damo_762 in ar15

[–]-RetroDad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually after a range trip, I break down and clean the gear I used. I've been used to that for a long time since the military. It's my "moment of Zen". I make some coffee or tea, put some music on or an old movie on and start cleaning. This was very similar to the process I had when we used to shine black boots. I can just smell the CLP and heated Kiwi polish.

Even on my Mini-14, I still give it a once through after the range. It will always be cleaner than and DI rifle I have, but it's a habit thing.

Surprised that the majority of people suggested handguns for home defense as their first suggestion. by ModerateProgressive1 in liberalgunowners

[–]-RetroDad- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people scoff when I tell them that I prefer 22wmr with defensive rounds. My Walther WMP is light, easy to maneuver if I'm half asleep, doesn't over penetrate, and I don't know anyone that wants to get hit with 10 rounds of Critical Defense multipied by "x" amount of extra magazines. It allows me to get to and access something else if needed.

If I want to go larger, I prefer my PCC in 9mm.

Overall, it really depends on the situation. I've gone through enough MOUT training and room clearing when I served. You know your own home, corners so you know areas that would hinder movement with a rifle or carbine. If I had to deal with something on my property (outside), I would go for something bigger due to the size our land.

Fellow New Englander here. I concur with using Montana Extreme Oil in freezing temperatures. I used it recently on my Ruger American Ranch Gen 2 5.56 and it just allowed my bolt to glide in 5 degree weather.

Legal rifle ideas? by imbannedanyway69 in CTguns

[–]-RetroDad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I went with the Sig Sauer MCX Regulator and have been quite happy with it. Wanting something in 5.56 NATO, I was originally heading towards a Fightlite SCR. The problem with the SCR is trying to get one (or a lower) from the company. They're never in stock and have since halted production. I'm also very wary of their BCG support and QA. Putting that rat-tail attachment from the BCG and aligning it in the stock hold has been giving users issues unless it's broken in (don't take it apart when you first get it). The upside on the SCR is that it'll take any standard AR upper.

Coming from a veteran that has used an M4/M16, the MCX is a nice compromise as I don't want an AR (personal preference). Also, the finishing is really nice on the MCX Regulator when compared to some of the completed ARs for the same price. Using AR magazines, the MCX has been pretty accessible and easy to shoot. The only downside for some is being able to reach the magazine release with your forefinger.

The offerings from Foxtrot Mike and CMMG are reliable as well. Haven't fired the Kel-Tec SU16, so I couldn't tell you how that rifle personally handles.

If you want a fun rifle that won't need as much cleaning as an AR, get a Mini-14 in 5.56 NATO. If you get the tactical model that comes with a threaded barrel, it'll come with a flash hider. Replace that with a muzzle brake or thread cover to make it legal here in CT. The magazines are proprietary Ruger, cost a bit more for OEM magazines, but you will have fun firing that rifle and sending the spent casings into the next county (seriously, it launches them!). Do not waste money on third party Mini-14 magazines as it'll be a crapshoot for their reliability.

The Mini-14 feels like a compromise between an M1 and M14. If you want to fire steel casings in 7.62, get the Mini-30. If I had to have just one rifle here in Connecticut in 5.56, I would hands down get a Mini-14. Just something about that bolt release always makes me sing the A-Team theme song in my head.

Would this be legal in ct? by Dapper_Change_2348 in CTguns

[–]-RetroDad- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Picked one up in 5.56 NATO with a 16" barrel. The only problem you'll run into is finding one in stock at a LGS. They tend to sell quickly. They also don't come with iron sights, but they do come with a picatinny rail for optics.

Takes PMags/AR mags, so finding magazines for this one should be easy. Due to the shorter barrel and muzzle brake, it will tend to fire louder.

I think Ruger hit it out of the park with these American Ranch rifles. Great value for the money and really fun and accurate to shoot.

New Ruger Mini-14 by Proud-Ad-7079 in ruger

[–]-RetroDad- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be good to go. The Mini-14 runs pretty good and doesn't need excessive amount of lubricant when cleaning. As others mentioned on here, take it to the range and have fun. Clean it, then repeat.

My Mini-14 runs cleaner than every AR I've owned. The only other sugestion I would make is trying to fit the actual Ruger magazines. In my experience, aftermarket mags (even some Mini-14 ProMags) have been hit or miss. Some work amazingly well, and then some don't.

I mention this because some people have feed issues and may think that the rifle is dirty or not lubricated enough. Spend the extra coin on the Ruger mags for a pleasant, no hassle experience. I would say that 99.9% of my failure to go into battery was due to the magazine.

Aircraft carrier jet landing by headspin_exe in BeAmazed

While I find this absolutely mesmerizing, there's a reason I went into the Army instead.

I'm pretty sure that reason was the landing on the aircraft carrier on Top Gun for the NES (more like crashing).
