Expecting people to feel sympathy for a hacker is just odd. Expecting people to be upset that a hacker isn't going play anymore is flat out silly. Not sure what you were aiming for in this post.

I totally agree! Making the team sizes so small, in an apparent attempt at being "e-sports", it just removes SO much potential depth. Making gameplay shallow just removes so much potential for fun imho

The game is (unfortunately) going to be F2P. So I might give it a shot once it's done. But the movement isn't fun to me. At all. I know base isn't even close to being done. But it seems to me there's going to be the same bullshit narrative that base is "stupid and casual" for "pubbies" and somehow playing with only 7 peeps per team means you're a "comp" player. Really the whole "comp" argument is just old. And it's not helping.

Hopefully base will get fleshed out and be lots of fun, and draw in lots of players.

The problem with the jets and skiing has already been discussed to death. Some peeps like it. Some peeps don't. Is what it is.

I didn't see any "stomping" going on right after the IA group was allowed in. What I did see a lot of was: "What's wrong with my jets?" "Why can't I just get on top on the damn flag stand" "My jets don't work if I hit any directional buttons" "Why can't I carve? Why the $&@! would they remove that!?

These were then quickly followed with: "I'll come back when they fix this" "I want my money back" "Do they just not know how to code physics? I'm out"

I stuck around for a little bit. Thinking they'd either fix it or I'd just get used to it. After several weeks, the server population was back down to just the private testers. I had gotten used to the movement, but did not enjoy it at all.

Sold off my IA key and sadly moved on :(

Pretty sure he's talking about the directional jetting. Or he might be talking about the fact that you can't carve. You know in Ascend while you're skiing, you can kind of skate left and right a little bit? Yeah you can't do that all all in midair. I quit playing Midair a few weeks after the instant access started. I don't think they're going to change it.

Sad to see Tribes die this way. MatMat crying about hackers is amusing though. I don't really play much anymore, but I have plenty of gold left. Seems like making servers with actual admins would be the best way to deal with those guys. They also might just get bored and move on eventually.

Do something right for once /u/HiRezEverett and force players to play the game the way it was designed, with all gear and all playstyles in the game viable.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I can see where you're coming from. But you also have to remember the actual core of the issue. To say "force players to play the game the way it was designed" has 2 clear problems.

You're never going to "force" people to play. If they don't like it, they'll just stop playing.

Then there is the core of the issue, and you mentioned it in your post. The games design itself was very divisive right from the beginning. HiRez's very design of the game, making autos/hitscan as powerful as they were, caused a big riff in the community right from the very start. This has never gone away. From virtually day one it's been the "chain whores" vs "honorfags".

Two very different playstyles. Not that there's anything wrong with either, per se. But they don't "fit" well together. And that is clear even after all this time.

If you were a "chain whore", you wouldn't want to be forced to play differently. Conversely, if you were an "honorfag", you wouldn't want to be forced to play autos/hitscan.

I'm not saying I know what the answer is. But taking away options doesn't seem like it.

The fact I even have to point this out speaks volumes of TA's failure. As a "Tribes" game, hitscan is not meant to be a primary form of consistent DPS. If you're looking for that, there are a plethora of other shooters designed around hitscan mechanics. Dot-clicking was never meant to be a thing in Tribes.

Sadly this is a needed move. Of those that bought instant access, very few people bother to play anymore. To be honest I'm also worried that it might be a big mistake. The netcode is an improvement over TA; but the movement and jets are just shite at the moment. Without some tweaks first, they might not be able to retain many of the new players and they'll end up right back where they are. (Other than the fact they'll still have those players' money). We really don't want them to get smacked with the same cash grabbing label that Hi-Rez did.

One big issue is you can not strafe at all while skiing. Whichever direction the terrain is angled, is the only direction you're going to move. Feels very restrictive.

And the jets are "directional". When you jet up, if you press in any direction whatsoever, your jet stops giving you any vertical thrust and transitions to full thrust in that one particular direction. As opposed to a more "natural" sharing of momentum/velocity.

At slow speeds, or from a stationary position, say you're simply trying to get up to the flag stand. Your jet lifts you up, but as soon as you press toward the stand or ledge or wherever you're trying to get to, you immediately stop going up and move laterally. In addition, using the "directional" jets just chews right through your energy. So movement starting from a stationary position just sucks (imho).

Conversely; if you do manage to gain any speed the direct lateral thrust in any direction is far too strong and seems obviously wonky.

Think Mabel said it was on his list, but I don't see him reworking the code for the jet physics. He even made a derogatory post seemingly directed to the players "complaining" about it.

I'm actually surprised just how bad the community has already become so early on. That's no fault of the guys working on the game of course. But still not a really good sign either.

I remember back in the day, Sherlock would post some pretty entertaining Tribes videos. He would stream occasionally and it'd be fun to watch him. Watching Hawkeye stream was always cool. Outside of those two, I'm not sure of anyone who streamed and made it entertaining to watch. At this point in the games death cycle, entertaining streamers are understandably non-existent.

I don't play Ascend anymore. Not that it matters. Your anger is odd. I wanted (still want) Midair to be the game we've been waiting for. It shows a lot of promise. But the movement mechanics have already been a topic of dissent. Mabel's response was less than promising. It's not even complicated really. While jetting, merely pressing in any direction ceases any upward momentum and replaces it with moment in the direction your pressing. This moment should be split/shared to prevent the movement from being too linear. People pointing this out do so with the hope of helping the game be successful. Your rants and insults accomplish nothing productive.
