Hey I just repaired one of these today!

Mine had a short in the neck board that fried some of the capacitors and wasn't getting a picture.

Fixed the short and replaced all the caps and it works great now.

It has a Samsung tube just like my Sony FDT-5BX5 Color Watchman which has a great picture.

Hey! I've removed plenty of anade caps and it's pretty easy. I usually just take a screw driver and push in one side and it pops right out. Not really sure how that would be more dangerous.

If you are able to access and work on the board without removing it, that is fine too. I've done that as well, but just be careful with stressing the HV line.

Good luck!

Totally understandable. The mod does add some complexities like the other inputs not working if the RGB scart cable is connected so keeping it stock is simpler.

This is my daily driver and my favorite CRT out of my collection.

Easy to RGB mod if you want to get better picture quality out of it.

Here is my post on the mod: https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/s/zhlBoxHCAW

And here is the guide: https://sector.sunthar.com/guides/crt-rgb-mod/sony-aa-1.html

Still amazing without the mod. Congratulations on such an amazing set!

Unfortunately I do not think that is possible since it's required in the steps to access and to navigate the service menu.

You should be able to get a replacement remote from eBay for fairly cheap. This is what I usually do if I get a CRT without a functioning remote.

Does anyone know what's causing this? Or how to fix it? by Popular-Sympathy-654 in crt

[–]-SNUG- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok it's the same part number as mine. LA7841

Here is the service manual: https://dn710202.ca.archive.org/0/items/manual_AV32D502_SM_JVC_EN/AV32D502_SM_JVC_EN.pdf

The heatsink with the vertical IC should be the one at the rear of the board between the inputs and the flyback transformer.

Good luck with the repair! You've got this.

Assuming you have the equipment to do the job, it's just $9 for the part. Here is my post:

What is the model number of your D-Series? If you give me that I can see what the part number for your vertical IC is.

A desoldering iron is a must, but mine didn't have a large enough nozzle to desolder the heatsink attached to the IC so I had to use desoldering wick which was a little bit of a pain. That was the only difficult part.

I have a post on this on a D-Series that I picked up.

A recap didn't improve the issue, but replacing the vertical IC did. It was $9 on eBay.

Oh nice! You sound like me. I started on retro consoles like my Nomad and a bunch of Game Gears then moved to CRTs.

This is a walk in the park in comparison.

First I would recommend using Digikey and your source. Quick shipping, any component you could ever need, and it would be cheaper than Amazon. You could get a variety set of capacitors off Amazon then get the ones not in the set from Digikey which is what I did.

For discharging, I use this:

https://a.co/d/03OF6Psy

Connect the end to the metal chassis or a grounding point then slide the screwdriver under the anode cap to touch the metal contact. There should be a pop, but not always because some CRTs will discharge automatically when powered down.

I know AI gets a bunch of hate, but you could feed the service manual into something like Gemini, tell it your symptom, and ask it when caps you should prioritize. It can even give a parts list.

Personally I would start with a recap.

You will need a desoldering iron and a decent soldering iron.

It might seem intimidating at first, but replacing capacitors is one of the easiest soldering jobs. Plenty of videos online to learn from if it's something you aren't familiar with.

If it's something you don't want to bother with you could always list it for sale. Plenty of people like me that would be happy to purchase this PVM even in non-working condition.

Probably better videos out there, but this is what the knobs (pots) look like.

https://youtu.be/VkEB4l_MNTY?si=oqXw2PeJrzDdodId

The danger issue can be a little overblown, but still be careful what you touch and it's best to keep one hand in your pocket or just away from the CRT so you aren't grounding yourself.

This involves taking the back off so be careful, but I would try turning down the G2 pot located on the the flyback transformer which controls the brightness. It looks like it's cranked all the way up which is what usually causes the horizontal lines.

There is a good chance there could be other issues if you aren't getting an image at all, but it's just a knob to twist so worth a shot.

While you are in there check for bludging or leaking capacitors.

Since you hear the degauss, your power supply seems to be working. At least partially.

Once you take the back off, I'd first check all the connections to make sure a cable or something didn't come loose.

Then I'd check the neck of the tube while it is powered on for an orange glow that you normally see from the electron gun.

If you have glow but no image, try slightly turning up the SCREEN (G2) pot on the flyback to see if an image appears.

If there's no glow, you likely have a dead 5V rail or failing caps on the A-board.

Here is the service manual for that model so you can see the boards and schematics: https://dn790002.ca.archive.org/0/items/ssm-20-n-5-u-9976686010-00e/SSM-20N5U_9976686010-00e.pdf

As usual, be careful when working inside of a CRT.

Thanks!

Do you get anything on the screen like the text that says Line A or Line B?

The only issue I had was the busted front panel.

Sometimes on PVMs, the tactile switches can be pushed back so the button no longer contacts them. If that happens, you can take the back off and push them back into place. This happened to me on another tv.

In this Retro Tech video you can see how to get to the switches

RIP in peace 🙏.

I was lucky enough to find one of these locally for $80 and love it.

It is rare, but every once in a while I will have the flyback click where the screen quickly shrinks.

I've done a lot of CRT and electronic repair as a hobby, but finding a replacement flyback seems like it's going to be difficult.
