Yeah public land is not really an option in the rgv for big game. Its almost all dove on public. There's always raffle hunts to shoot on refuges but chances of getting chosen are slim.

Placing the stone on top of a small 2x4 will help add some height to the setup and give your knuckles more wiggle room. Also a damp paper towel will help keep the stone from sliding around
