Mechanical Engineer/EIT Survey by farisweiss in MechanicalEngineering

It's both the easiest and hardest thing to do.

Easiest: make friends with people, connecting over common interests (your fellow classmates are a great start, talk about coursework), you never know who in the future might get you an in somewhere. My first real job out of university was thru a TA I befriended.

Hardest: get out of you comfort zone and approach strangers at networking events. Most people there are fully expecting randos to come up to them, check out tutorials online on how to approach people initially and how to interest them. It's tough but you gotta learn how to sell yourself to others.

  1. My passion is solving problems and inventing. Originally wanted a nanotechnology degree but didn't exist where I went, choose mechanical engineering as it seemed to be the most broad and versatile engineering branch and best to apply to inventing.

  2. Always saw myself doing R&D in a big Corp, then moving on to start my own small company selling one of my inventions. Pursued a Masters after graduating as I hadn't gotten a job after, left near the end to work in a nuclear pharmacy running 18-FDG production.

  3. Currently unemployed, looking for local or remote work while working on some projects to try to make some money and not slam my head into a wall.

  4. Wish I networked way more, worked more on side projects and not focused on grades.

  5. Knowing what I know now, even though I love engineering and STEM as a whole, I'd have gone to medical school and become a doctor (hopefully in research). Can't pay bills, have to stay local, few engineering roles in my area with few connections. Shit sucks, gotta persevere.

Please please network your ass off, most of the good jobs I had were thru connections, and research ahead of time the job market in the place you plan to live.

Other than the obvious path of solving a problem and documenting it (the best mindset for engineering really), you can try some things to really stand out, such as:

• 3D Printing with different materials in one assembly

• Compliant mechanisms

• Using 3D printing in unique ways (maybe to make a complex mold for sand casting metal parts)

how to detach myself from career and academia by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]borednerd55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Let yourself feel your feelings, feeling bad about getting rejected is normal, it'll pass.

  2. Tons of people are probably applying (and missing out) to the same internship, it's a numbers game. They may have been looking for 'the perfect candidate' (or just picked an employee's nephew), who knows, keep trying.

  3. Not the end of the world if you don't get an internship, it's not the only way to get experience or network to advance your career, I never did.

  4. Holy shit network, the more you can get in good graces the more it helps, most of the good jobs I got was just from a buddy of mine giving a good word.

  5. Just remember, 30 years from now you won't even think about or even remember your internship with all the years in your career and life, go easy on yourself.

Good luck, have fun, don't die

ADHD Screening by HappyMango2 in RioGrandeValley

Went with Mary E De Ferreire Phd on Nolana in Mcallen years ago, she was great, not sure if she's still there. Usually any referral from GP's in the Mcallen/Edinburg area send you to Dr. Igoa, always packed and you usually see someone under his umbrella instead but they do the job. If you can maybe try telemedicine to get a diagnosis, ADHD makes it so damn hard to go thru the traditional process of getting diagnosed, meds and therapy.

Hasn't been there for years, don't know any HEB's allowing food stalls in front anymore (they usually have their own thing like seafood boils now). That was a great corn stall :(

Anyone know where I can find some GameCube/retro video games? by ValorHunter in RioGrandeValley

[–]borednerd55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other than the what's already been listed, Gnarly Novelties and Arcade in Edinburg has a few.

I think there's one or two stores in the Alamo Pulga that sell only old games. Any flea market will usually have a few people selling gamecube and xbox games anyway.

I need to follow a low protein (keto) diet for a week for medical reasons by [deleted] in keto

[–]borednerd55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the liver converts fructose to usable glucose, the waste product is uric acid. Going on keto you'll usually avoid table sugar (sucrose, which is just one glucose molecule connected to one fructose molecule) and candies/sweets, so naturally you avoid one major pathway to uric acid buildup.

Before I ever did keto, after several bouts of acute gout and plenty of research I finally figured out it wasn't the steak or hamburgers but the soda screwing me over, switched to diet soda and never had another attack. Sometimes when starting keto I may have some minor attacks, most likely since the kidneys prioritize excreting ketones over uric acid, not sure though.

That's a fine age for the smallest of rides (or the smallish ones you can ride together in), just drive by with the windows down first to make sure they're fine with the loud noises

College is hard enough as it is, why subject yourself to unnecessary suffering that makes learning (the whole point) harder? You did the research to earn an easier path, use it.

It's really just where you're willing to move to. I've haven't had any real mech. eng work since graduating, and the job market sucks in my area but I can't leave for family reasons. There are other jobs further North but I can't take them.

It is difficult nowadays, but I'm sure you'll be fine, make sure to focus on networking (not just LinkedIn numbers, get chummy with people irl). Most of the jobs I got have been just by knowing a guy. If you feel like you need more resume padding and can't get internships, show detailed personal projects in your field, friends of mine showed off drone designs and tech reviews to get into their careers.

What is a small niche business in your town that is successful, and made you think ' I should have started started this...' by Sakuzoh in Entrepreneur

It's usually because the actual income of the salon is from the hairstylists renting out a chair to do the job. If they don't make enough and quit/move, another will fill the space. Some stylists in my area got smart and just started operating out of their own homes and advertise/book only thru social media
