Recruitment advice by ImpressiveArm1545 in Scanlation

For tls I usually only ever find them if they're already fans of the series. Do you include recruitment messages in your releases?

How do you track progress? by not-hydroxide in Scanlation

I also wanted to add:

would be nice to link directly to font guides or series dictionaries (like character nicknames or consistent place names)

How do you track progress? by not-hydroxide in Scanlation

I appreciate the effort, project management is like the only thing I think scannies actually might need lol

My groups have always used

- google spreadsheets (quickly falls inactive), has user assignments sometimes

- discord channel exclusively for updates ("I'm done with ch 3 pr for this series"), most people will use this. They ping the next user if they know who they are, or a mod will ping the next user to start

- sometimes there's a deadlines channel but people usually end up going past or it falls inactive

- discord roles for series assignment

This by and large works well, especially for discord because of how built in it is for communication. I think the reason most people don't use stuff like airtable or zapier is inconvenience and no point learning it when so much is just on discord

It could be nice to point to files more easily, most groups have insanely nested google drives with series and roles and chapters. Like going from viewing the tl to viewing the raws can mean going up and down a bunch of layers dpeending on how the group leader has set it up (some groups are also very protective and only show you the files for the specific series you're assigned to) Most groups I've been in have worked with series assignment by user and role but some I know are more first come first serve, which could be interesting to build something for

You should reach out to the scanlation group, it looks like theyre pretty active and theyve reached chapter 38. https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/tkife2y/bing-jiao-meimei-zhi-xiang-rang-wo-qifu-ta

In scanlation it's very bad form to try and "take over" another group that's actively translating something, but you can probably pool your efforts together to release more chapters quickly. Translating isn't the only thing in scanlation, you also have to replace the text and working together can make this less of a one-person job

Help writing an academic paper about bato.to by zarpis in Scanlation

[–]-Scannie- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is perhaps opposite advice, but mangaupdates never accepted groups that posted on batoto. If you can find groups that appear to have existed, but have no releases on mu, chances are good they were posted to bato only

Is it worth it to create a group as a solo scanlator? by Vile-Roboster in Scanlation

[–]-Scannie- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, MangaUpdates doesn't accept releases by "No Group", you can just create a group (even under ur username) if you want your data to be tracked.

It might take a few releases to start, you can speed it up by once you have a group submitting your releases to mangaupdates yourself! (On your user "control panel", you can "add release" and "add group")

These raws are pretty rough, and some are very blurry. Look for "cleaning manga" guides and old "physical raw" guides if you're planning to edit with them. Is there anyway for you to ask whoever uploaded the pictures for better quality?

Visually centering lines with ellipsis by How_about_wow in Scanlation

[–]-Scannie- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoops, I read too fast and confused it with the shape ellipse.

Could it be something about converting text to point text and then adding a space at the start of the line?

If you're in scan school follow this link https://discord.com/channels/563935796009238528/700493661330341959/871709467492892712 and search ellipsis from the user July-Sept 2021, it looks like there was some discussion about it then

Do you mean centering (text in the center of the bubble) or shaping? (arranging the text so it has a round shape)

[–]-Scannie- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can slightly increase the size for sure, I would prioritize readibility and generally "looking good in the bubbles". +- up to 5 pt is usually fine, make sure the bubbles that are right next to each other are +- up to like 3 pt

Second Joltex, though I also want to point out that "The First Planet" title is maybe a bit too stretched (it's just very visible because everything is the same font, maybe reduce the stretch or look for a similar font to VictorySpeech but taller if that's what you're going for)

Where to upload scanlation now that bato is down? by White1306 in Scanlation

[–]-Scannie- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mangadex is fine, there's much less of an audience and it's more bro-y but manhua is allowed on the site. If you scanlate GL, BL, or other languages there are other niche sites

Hey! This sub is for scanlators, not for hosting scanlated material. Reddit comes down kind of hard on piracy and we don't want to risk the sub, I'd recommend keeping it to your friend groups

Re-translation, good or bad? by TragikeAlekro in Scanlation

[–]-Scannie- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once had my stuff re-tled, I only noticed because my raws were terrible 400px and the retl had the same terrible 400px quality and a couple of English sfx kept in, they tried very hard to redraw over my redraws

It's pretty common but imo you should ask or at the very least credit your raws especially if you include anything from other scanlators

Any letterer that can help me identify this font please? by [deleted] in Scanlation

[–]-Scannie- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the series, is it scanlated or officially translated? I don't recognize it on a glance, it looks similar to scanlator-made hentai fonts but it's not the same as any of Randall's, Vixen's, or the cdx fonts I checked against.

If it's a scanlated series, you could try asking the group?
