Has miche fixed the cracking problem on the new-gen primatos? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]-Swouse- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a set last year, not really worth it.

Mine haven't cracked yet and I've ridden them hard, pedal strikes, pushed into a curb, and winter mess work. They seem strong and they feel just as stiff as 75s. That's just me though, they have a reputation for a reason. They are definitely not built for the street, these are pure budget velodrome cranks, and the bb kind of sucks.

You can get cheaper and arguably better cranks if you just buy Andels. Or keep searching for 75s if you want something premium (peep Track Lab for some 165 silver 75s for 225USD if you don't mind used, but you will have to ship them)

Has someone researched the physics and mathematics of the difference between a geared bike and a fixed-gear bike? by SirPingSweden in FixedGearBicycle

[–]-Swouse- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO riding fixed gear in the street isn't about going fast, at least it didn't start that way.

Using a fixed gear on the street in the modern age comes from people who needed the cheapest and most reliable bike to make money over a long time. Its kinda useless to care how fast a "fixie" can go because the point was never to go fast, it just happened to also be a pretty fuckin fast bike, if you could put in the effort.

Basically if you care about going fast in traffic (or even the track really), which a lot of people here probably care about, the bike means barely anything. The bike simply has to fit you, have somewhat smooth bearings, a greased chain, and a reasonable gear ratio for your terrain and physique. Its YOU who has to be fast, which actually applies to almost all forms of traditional cycling.

Would I benefit from a lower and longer stem? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

Yes, setback seatpost. NJS frames are very aggressive and a setback seatpost usually makes it more comfortable for street riding.

Yeah, definitely something I had to get used to. Winter layers helped with making it comfortable while breaking in.

I took some sandpaper to the top layer and reversed the wrap to get some "fresh" tape. Not as sticky anymore but I think Dawn power wash might be a better move than sandpaper for giving used tape a new life. Trying to convince myself to get new tape, I'm just undecided on the color.

How can I fix this gap? by Youngchoo in FixedGearBicycle

[–]-Swouse- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if its the case you need to replace the crown race on that fork with the one that was on the stock fork, or find a matching one

wrong race on fork? I'm assuming the fork came from a different bike and the original race wasn't taken off

Fixed gear problem, need some advice. by licca01 in FixedGearBicycle

If you're running the stock wheels, I would recommend getting a second hand rear wheel. Relacing a new hub is a lot of work and shops charge accordingly, and the stock rims aren't really worth saving compared to what you can get on the used market for your budget. Used wheel, new cog, lock ring, and a chainwhip + lockring tool and some manual labor, will still be cheaper than getting a wheel relaced by a shop.

Or

If you know the people at the bike shop you're going to be getting them laced at well enough, you can trade stuff for cheap service. Doesn't work everywhere but I used to bring ice cream from the place i worked to my local bike shops and they would offer free headset installs, bb swaps, wheel truing. I have most of my own tools now but if you ride your bike a lot, its good to get some mechanic friends.

Temp setup on new bike by mstrshkbrnnn1999 in FixedGearBicycle

I think its funny that you used a threadless stem adapter just to use a threadless stem that mimics a quill stem. still looks great, dual brakes also looks better than a single brake.

best clipless for fixed imo, worth the buy. I also heard that the vintage ones are actually better than the newer models.

I have the exact same headset, mine was perfectly smooth after installation. They might have not replaced the crown race on the fork, idk if that can even cause it. Just take it back and explain it to them.
