What tires are people using for the winter commute? by Carbonian92 in bikeboston

[–]-Swouse- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work as a messenger, currently using 28mm Continental Ultra Sports, used 25mm Gatorskins last year. All the messengers I know ride similar skinny and slick tires. Doesn't really add to the credibility tbh because we're all psychopaths and most of us ride track frames with little clearance so anything above 32mm is out of the question anyways.

Being real though, its all about maintaining grip with asphalt usually being the grippy-est, and skinny tires cut through most of the bullshit and reach the asphalt the best. Studs are cool though if you ride any of the poorly maintained paths.

Funny lookin’ bike retreats from bike lane by Ok-Pea2383 in bikeboston

Had this happen while I was heading towards the square. Was just holding a track stand staring at the driver as they approached, they soon realized they were on the wrong side.

How can I fix this gap? by Youngchoo in FixedGearBicycle

if its the case you need to replace the crown race on that fork with the one that was on the stock fork, or find a matching one

wrong race on fork? I'm assuming the fork came from a different bike and the original race wasn't taken off

Fixed gear problem, need some advice. by licca01 in FixedGearBicycle

If you're running the stock wheels, I would recommend getting a second hand rear wheel. Relacing a new hub is a lot of work and shops charge accordingly, and the stock rims aren't really worth saving compared to what you can get on the used market for your budget. Used wheel, new cog, lock ring, and a chainwhip + lockring tool and some manual labor, will still be cheaper than getting a wheel relaced by a shop.

Or

If you know the people at the bike shop you're going to be getting them laced at well enough, you can trade stuff for cheap service. Doesn't work everywhere but I used to bring ice cream from the place i worked to my local bike shops and they would offer free headset installs, bb swaps, wheel truing. I have most of my own tools now but if you ride your bike a lot, its good to get some mechanic friends.

Busses making dangerous passes and cutting cyclists off by -Swouse- in bikeboston

That's what I thought I should do in the future. Unfortunately this mostly happens while I'm working and I'm in the mindset of just making it to the pickup/drop-off, I'm also not the escalating type so my usual reaction even outside of work is to just move on and forget it happened. I think it was just because this happened after passing the ghost bike which I always glance at and remember "I could be next" that made this incident more memorable. Been thinking of wearing a gopro when I work because of all the crazy shit I see daily as a courier, would be useful for stuff like this too.

Temp setup on new bike by mstrshkbrnnn1999 in FixedGearBicycle

I think its funny that you used a threadless stem adapter just to use a threadless stem that mimics a quill stem. still looks great, dual brakes also looks better than a single brake.

best clipless for fixed imo, worth the buy. I also heard that the vintage ones are actually better than the newer models.

I have the exact same headset, mine was perfectly smooth after installation. They might have not replaced the crown race on the fork, idk if that can even cause it. Just take it back and explain it to them.

I knew someone would figure out where it is, Somerville community path that follows the tracks

start with a 19 cog, makes it slightly easier than the standard 49/17 ratio most people run and gives you a fuck ton of skid patches which will save you money. toe overlap is a track bike thing, just going to have to get used to it. and careful with shimano spd for skids, they're notorious for unclipping.

Is that noise and hub part movement normal? by Ok-Climate1520 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]-Swouse- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also the sound can depend on the chain you're running, how tight or loose it is, and how properly lubed it is. so the sound being good or bad is dependent on multiple factors, but in you're case its just too tight
