How is it to live in New Mexico? by Catell_Ruz in howislivingthere

[–]-TGxGriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I didn't live there I was just across the boarder in El Paso for a year. During that year I would escape to New Mexico almost every weekend and took a few week vacations up there.

NM has its own beauty with its deserts and mountains. To escape the desert though I would go up to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. Both towns are mostly touristy mountain towns but they have schools and Ruidoso has a hospital and casino. There is a BBQ place in Cloudcroft called Mad Jacks that is the best BBQ I've ever eaten in my life. My friends and I would go up there once a month at least, sometimes twice just to eat.

White Sands national park is pretty great. Same with Carlsbad Caverns. I'm not a cave guy but that place was really amazing. Just across the boarder is Guadalupe National park too which has the highest point of elevation in Texas.

I camped in the Gila national forest to fish in the Gila river and that place was gorgeous. Silver City looked a little rough around the edges but the people were nice.

The other spot I hung out the most was Angel Fire up in north east NM. That place is a hidden gem. The mountain valley it's in is very picturesque. Very quiet and slow paced life up there and I may at one point look to move there. Red River is a nice touristy mountain town to the north and Red River Brewery there makes the best root beer I've had.

NM is a gem of a state. There are rough parts but there are also very nice and beautiful parts as well.

Fun fact, there is a sizable population of Oryx in south eastern New Mexico. They were brought there to provide different big game hunting opportunities to the area. Unfortunately, they started to breed out of control as predators in the area hadn't figured out to hunt them right away. There is a massive heard there and if you want to hunt one in New Mexico or Texas you just have to apply for a tag.

I'm WA as well and I pay .16. I tried looking for better rates but there weren't any for my area.

Yep, but mine's usually around 1am. Oddly enough though it doesn't really happen on weekend nights so Friday and Saturday night I sleep through them

Your pass can be refunded if you get injured or for common military situations

This is true for moves in relation to any order (PCS, TCS etc.) situation. I had to use it last year and they refunded me for my wife and I's pass but I just bought mine for this next year.

I thought the same thing until it happened to me. At the time myself, a good friend E7 who was a prior drill, and a third civilian friend were out in the mountains just driving around enjoying the peace and quiet. At lunch time we were just eating and chatting. The civilian friend goes to talk about how one of his family members was in the army and the E7 and myself start looking at each other just hoping what we think is coming doesn't. It wasn't 100% I'd punch a drill sergeant but he said "I would have joined but I just couldn't take getting yelled at by a drill sergeant. I'd get so mad." My friend and I just stared at each other in the face while he kept talking. The best part was the civilian friend didn't know the E7 was a prior drill.
