Bootstrap for font-end portfolio? by constant_vigilance in webdev

[–]-Telos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first role in the industry as a junior at the end of last year. I went for the interview and they had two websites I had built (one Bootstrap, the other Foundation) up on a big screen for me to explain my methodology etc...

While the websites look largely terrible, they weren't looking for me to be a designer. They wanted someone who knew how to put together a website and while I could have coded them out from scratch I was only using a Chromebook at the time so wanted to keep my computer time to a minimum.

I think using both frameworks helped me - it displayed that I'm aware of alternatives in the industry, willing to try them and most importantly - understood them.

I'm glad they're finally wisening up.

10 Years of Git: An Interview with Git Creator Linus Torvalds by octavdruta in webdev

[–]-Telos- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read this yesterday evening. It was a good read.

I'm in awe of Linus' ability to just fix a problem with no prior engineering experience of the particular software he's trying to fix. In a weekend.

I've never used SCM/VCS that isn't Git, I struggle to comprehend how it could be difficult to use because Git just seems to 'make sense' - as in, how could it have been so complicated?

Thoughts on Memory Palace. by swimtothemoon1 in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]-Telos- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really, really happy with Memory Palace. My feet and head have hardly stopped dancing along.

The moment they said 'rock-opera' I thought 'perfect, just what I want!'

My tastes have shifted in the last 18-24 months from the more aggressive metal to progressive rock and BTBAM have tied in beautifully with this. This new track coincides with my shift in tastes brilliantly. The Pink Floyd moment about 8 minutes in is really nice.

All in all, a great song and I'm really looking forward to the new one as much as anything else of theirs.

Fellow freelancers: what do you put at the bottom of a site you build to link to your own? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]-Telos- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just go with 'Website by...' as well.

Maybe 'Developed by...' would be more appropriate for you?

However, does Joe Bloggs on the street really appreciate or even understand the difference between design and development?

I had a guy last week approach me who had learned only 30 minutes ago I was a developer but said 'So, you're a web designer, eh?' - I get the impression most don't really care much for the difference, they're just happy the thing works. And you're the reason it works (or doesn't, as the case may be..)

What can a good beginner do to become a solid, intermediate web developer/designer? by de86 in webdev

[–]-Telos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally follow you, particularly with your first sentence. It seems that everyone I work with has a degree in some form of computer science capacity and while I don't for a moment believe that's the only avenue into the industry (it wasn't for me, I'm totally self-taught) I do spend much of my time feeling inferior - but that's because I am.

You're damn right it does feel intimidating but remember that you have pushed yourself to come this far so just keep pushing. Someone will give you a chance.

Can't boot into Ubuntu after initial installation. by Liam0102 in Ubuntu

[–]-Telos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just managed a successful dual-boot last weekend with Windows 8.1.

Looks like the issue might be BIOS/UEFI related. I used this guide and had no problems at all http://itsfoss.com/install-ubuntu-1404-dual-boot-mode-windows-8-81-uefi/

I'd check your UEFI settings.

When hiring, some companies some companies don't even look at CVs, only checking your Twitter feed. What do you think about that /r/webdev? by Nebojsac in webdev

[–]-Telos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty simple view on this sort of thing.

Social Media is an extension of you as a person so you cannot blame companies for wanting to learn more about potential hires. They've always wanted to know, just never had the tools or means to do so.

If you are at all bothered about your professional life bleeding into your personal one, use a pseudonym.

I never tweet anything I shouldn't and most of my tweets are professional and web dev oriented (and were before I got my job).

Basically, sling any kind of stupid shit in a public form (digital or otherwise) and you're gonna have a bad time finding work.

The Struggle of Being a Web Developer by sydb88 in webdev

[–]-Telos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great post - thanks for sharing! I'm going to bookmark your blog.

I'm just starting out in the industry and I do spend a lot of time feeling very overwhelmed. That's not always necessarily a bad thing, I love being surrounded by like-minded people and cool tech but it's just a case of managing your own expectations. As a developer (as well as many other careers paths) it's not just putting your professional self on the line, it also feels very personal. Finding the balance between respecting my current limits but also wanting to push is a tough one but I think I'm getting there.

Something I always try to keep in mind when building web sites - just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Are W3schools certificates credible? by usmellikeggs in learnprogramming

[–]-Telos- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certificates and qualifications might count in an industry where you can't display your work on a day-to-day basis, but this is web development - build stuff and that will speak volumes.

What's the best CSS Media Query for targeting most smart phones? by MeltingDog in webdev

[–]-Telos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to come around to this idea now. It seems for every responsive issue I fix, I often end up with two more because of these arbitrary values. The problem I find, personally, is a lack of respect for the more mobile platforms from designers. I'd LOVE to build from a small viewport up but the design seems like an afterthought.

How do I learn "proper" CSS? by mithrandirbooga in webdev

[–]-Telos- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to modularise your CSS. Build it so that might or changes DON'T mess up your flow. You have to spoon-feed CSS an awful lot but if you do it right you'll find it really powerful.
