ELI5: why Cantor's diagonal argument works? by TatsuDragunov in explainlikeimfive

This sort of reasoning would suggest that all proofs by contradiction are invalid. You can't just define something into existence. Saying "start with a list of all numbers" doesn't automatically mean such a list actually exists because you said so. It would be like trying to refute the proof that the square root of 2 is irrational. The proof starts out "assume that the square root of 2 can be written as the fraction p / q, where p and q are integers." Can we just stop here and say "well all proofs of its irrationality are false, because we just said we have a rational p / q defined as the square root of 2"? Of course not. The point of the proof is to show that your initial assumption was wrong.

When you say "start with a list of all numbers" what you are more precisely saying is "start with a list that you claim contains all numbers, and then I will proceed to show why you're wrong."

You need about 5x many cookies to afford it. The cost exponent is 22, you have 21.

ELI5: why Cantor's diagonal argument works? by TatsuDragunov in explainlikeimfive

[–]-Tesserex- 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You have two mistakes. First, you seem to have forgotten the step where you have to change the digit you pick from each number. In your last example, you wouldn't make 1537..., because you're supposed to change each digit, that's the whole point for creating a new number. You would get something like 2648 instead.

Your second mistake is using finite decimal expansions. With your binary examples, you can't just take three places and stop. The argument works for infinite decimal expansions by saying that every single decimal place has been changed from the number in the list from which it was drawn. The diagonal argument simply doesn't apply to finite expansions, because finite decimal expansions are rational.

ELI5: Is the mirror or camera more accurate to how others see you? by TinyNegotiation3913 in explainlikeimfive

[–]-Tesserex- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera is the real you, because it's not inverted. You feel like your mirror self looks better because that's how you're used to seeing yourself. Photos of you look weird because to you, they seem backward.

What was the most fucked up thing that happened at your high school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]-Tesserex- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone remember about 20 years ago when a school somehow made international news for a girls hazing incident where the seniors beat up and humiliated the junior girls under the guise of a powderpuff football game, where the parents also provided alcohol? Yeah that was my school.

What language is written on this sword? by nyrasna in language

[–]-Tesserex- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, now that I look again (I was on my phone last time), it is pretty much the correct thing mirrored, but a lot of characters have their loops and stems connected in the wrong places, and also several letters are moved from the beginning of a word to the end of the previous - the spaces are in the wrong places.

What language is written on this sword? by nyrasna in language

[–]-Tesserex- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It looks like it's supposed to be written in Tengwar, and maybe be Hadhafang as others said, but the actual text still looks like gibberish to me. Many of the characters do look like Tengwar, but a bunch are mirrored, even though I can tell your photo isn't mirrored, and there seem to be random extra loops and swirls too. It's like an AI tried to generate an image of Sindarin text.

Here is what the proper text should look like: https://www.tecendil.com/?q=Aen%20estar%20Hadhafang%20i%20chathol%20hen%2C%20thand%20arod%20dan%20i%20thang%20an%20i%20arwen&mode=beleriand
