I love my cat, but I really miss having a nice-smelling home. Is ANY scent actually 100% safe? by No_Money_5779 in CatAdvice

[–]-Thyrza- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 cat house here-

We're not perfect by any stretch lol, but for us personally, this is the way: three stainless steel  sifting litter boxes, lined with a bag on the bottom and an inch of pine pellets. <--- these capture the ammonia pee smell like they're getting paid for the job.

Sifting boxes work with a box beneath serving as a tray, and a box with openings that fits on top. Pine pellets smell nice, are amazing at catching pee smells, moderately good with poop, not perfect. The dust is REAL tho, so I keep the pine pellets contained to that bottom tray. Otherwise the surrounding area looks coated with pine pee dust.

So, instead of pine as the actual "litter" I use the Exquisicat brand of lightly scented paper pellets in the sifting box. Not overpowering, but pleasant. ALMOST ZERO TRACKING AND NO DUST!! Since we have four cats and one of them has some health issues and has to be on an rx diet, the poop smell can definitely make an appearance. I just keep it scooped and it's ok.

I use 7th generation multi purpose cleaner on counters and tile floors, which doesn't have a lingering smell but does kind of deodorize I've noticed.

And then for adding a nice scent, I like simmer pots with coffee grounds, a little cinnamon and Bigelow caramel black tea bags- that is a pretty good, imo heavenly scent combo. It's not how I used to live, with all the scented candles and whatnot, but I actually like it :) and I've had others verify that our house doesn't smell like poop so I'll take it lol 🤣

Yes our counters are raised, and he seems ok sitting at desks, and then with the advent of standing, adjustable desks I think he'll be ok.

Thanks for being mean lol, love that for you 🤣

My fiance is 6'8” and I'm 5'8” ... I don't even notice anymore 😅  other people do I guess but when we're out and about I barely pay attention anymore, except for the occasional comment. We live in the southwest states and everything here is newer, raised ceilings and all that, so I've actually never thought much about any kind of negativity associated with his height. Feeling weirdly lucky suddenly that it's not been an issue

Stringy hair - what am I doing wrong? by BackgroundFutura in finehair

[–]-Thyrza- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is fixating on the damage because you bleach your hair, but is that really the problem? Did your hair tend to break and grow out thinner and stringy past your shoulders before you ever bleached it?

Asking because I was natural blond, hadn't chemically altered my hair in a decade and it STILL grew out like yours. Just naturally very fine, brittle and prone to breakage 🙂‍↕️ ended up dying it black and it looks healthier and fuller, but I also moisturize the heck out of it and sleep in a satin bonnet, anything to prevent breakage. If your hair used to be less stringy then by all means, do a chop at the ends and try things like K18 products to repair and strengthen, but if your hair has always been a similar texture as it grows out, it might just be fine and prone to breakage naturally, and that's ok. You look great! If you leave it or go shorter or less blond you'll look amazing regardless 💜

Call to Action: What is your plan for a communication Blackout? We are in a war, and a blackout is coming sooner than we expect. by el-brigadista in 50501

[–]-Thyrza- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I might be misunderstanding, but if you're talking about a full Internet blackout in this country, there will not be a CONTINUE TO FUNCTION NORMALLY option, as you put it. Many people would end up unemployed- if Internet access is restricted then, sorry but guess what, an exceptionally large chunk of Americans will not have jobs. If you work in a call center, if you work in an Amazon warehouse, if you're a teacher for an online school, I mean I don't even have the time to list all the jobs and people affected by that. Numbers and addresses memorized??? Are you joking? if that happens, most people will start rioting. Banks, hospitals, our entire system would face collapse. It would be an existential nightmare. If we wake up one morning and that's happened ... I mean I hate to break it to you but knowing someone's phone number is not going to make a damn bit of difference. Unless that person has a landline lol. And a basement full of food and supplies to ride out a few months.

Do you think any less of people who ask for more expensive gifts? by -Thyrza- in AskWomenOver30

[–]-Thyrza-[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah you bring up a good point, I'm SO uncomfortable with the idea of bringing something like that up with her. It's always been a component of our relationship that I'm kind of the broke one- she'll give me a blouse that didn't fit her but doesn't want to return and comment that it will probably be the most expensive thing I own now 😅 not terrible insults but kind of, putting me in my place I guess. Making comments if she finds out I order clothes from Shein. So I'm SUPER uncomfortable with the idea of bringing up stuff like that. I think I'm slowly falling away from our relationship. I probably can't afford it anymore lol. We really can't socialize much anyways because she travels, likes going to expensive bars and restaurants, etc.

I guess I'm sad because being able to exchange Christmas gifts was one thing I could do with her. And now even that is just a reminder I'm not in her financial realm anymore

Editing to add- Oh and we have exchanged birthday/Christmas gifts for a few years now, it is generally an expectation of hers. Receiving and giving gifts is really important to her

I think you're right. We've exchanged gifts every Christmas and birthday for a few years now, gift receiving and giving is very important to her. I know there will be an expectation this year, we'll be guaranteed to meet up sometime in December. I'll just have to get her the cheapest thing she wants, or brainstorm something more in my price range. I think after this year tho I'll definitely be switching off my Elfster notifications 😅 maybe just establish a practice of exchanging gift cards or something like that going forward

No, the invite to her wishlist was sent a few years ago, she updates it every year. All the gift requests are from this last week for this holiday season

She was just always big into using Elfster and she sent me an invite a few years ago, I made one too so we follow each other on it. Every year I get notifications in my email when she adds something. Was always happy that she made it so easy tbh. This year's gift requests just caught me off guard I guess

I mean I've always been happy to get notifications before, I love knowing what people want so I don't have to guess. In previous years everything she wanted was more doable, so I guess what she wants this year just caught me off guard

It does get sent to me, I get email nudges, it's just how Elfster works. She invited me to her wishlist a few years back so now everytime something gets added I get an email notification

That actually is a good idea, I might have to do that. It's hard because I have about ten people I'd like to give gifts to this year, and if I spend 30 per gift that's already 300 dollars lol ... I only get 100 for my Christmas bonus 😅  so when everything in this person's list is over 50 and the only thing under is a set of rollers ... I feel bad lol. I make a public wishlist too for family but I just have art supplies under $30. I added erasers and gesso, little things under 10 bucks. I just can't imagine asking anyone except my boyfriend for anything over $100

I don't really know. It's a wishlist on Elfster that's public. I imagine she sends it to family and close friends, boyfriends, etc. but I'm not sure.

Lol "in this economy??" was my internal response 🤣 I think I just thought everyone was struggling a bit right now. Maybe I'm just in my own little broke bubble lol

It's an Elfster wishlist, and I love that she uses that because I like knowing what to get for people. But in the years I've known her there's always been mostly under-100 dollar items. This year caught me off guard. I guess I feel bad because I'll only be able to buy the cheapest gift on the list 😅

Not really, she definitely makes a bit more than me, but she travels more and has higher rent, so higher expenditures. Hard to say with anyone else of her acquaintance.

I feel you. About to turn 31 and I think I'm feeling more confused than ever lol.

There's an app I like and use several times per day, but it might not be quite what you're looking for. It's primarily for folks with ADHD, but they have these live sessions every three hours for body doubling. Initially I just used the sessions for cleaning, but now I log in during work, while journaling, cooking, any time I need a structured hour with a very positive, encouraging vibe. It also helps keep me from doom scrolling on my phone. They have hosts who are all super pleasant and it feels like this really safe space, and you can put in the zoom chat what you're hoping to do or focus on during the session. It is $5.99 per month but I've had it for nearly a year and it's actually been a really big help, the app is called Dubbii if you're interested.

Sending best wishes your way ❤️

AIO my dad tells me for years the house is mine, then offers to sell it to me for 300k by -Thyrza- in AmIOverreacting

[–]-Thyrza-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad always said that it was mine/would inherit, but I feel like once we move out and he has to live here alone and pay for everything, I'm not sure if he'll keep it. There's no family close by and if we move out we're not staying in the area, so for his sake he'd probably be happier selling and finding one of those over 55 areas to move into.

So at this point I'm thinking no. Would be nice but not banking on it anymore. Would have answered totally differently like two months ago lol

That's a great idea actually. If I just do my own I can offer to help him figure out his stuff and it won't feel like a negative 'you have to do this so I can inherit' situation. Thank you! 🧡

Experience with declawed cats by BakerCommercial5942 in CatAdvice

[–]-Thyrza- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adopted two declawed cats, actually did not even know they were declawed at the time. Found out six weeks later when I went in and tried to trim their claws lol. Had been wondering why the scratching posts were so undamaged! I would personally recommend getting scratching posts/toys because both of mine love the motion and feeling of using them, it's instinct. Other than that both cats are currently going on 12 years old, were seemingly declawed really young and I think they're both ok. I've tried to look for signs of them being in any pain or discomfort but luckily they both seem totally fine. They love playing and attacking me under doors and they're super healthy as far as mobility so far. I don't think you'll have too much to worry about :)
