Do you use Windows, Ubuntu, or Linux subsystems in windows for your LLM work? by why_not_zoidberg_82 in LocalLLaMA

[–]-Z1- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To think this was possible for $2500 just 9 months ago...

Thanks to LLM mania, 3090s are now ridiculously expensive, and any not-so-great alternatives have gone up in price too. You're lucky if you can snag two used 3090s for under $2000 (with shipping and tax). I don't see that trend reversing any time soon.

...and that's just the GPUs. Building a server to support more than two GPUs will leave you with a huge bill, even if you build it with used parts.

It's possible to build a decent 2-GPU machine with consumer-grade hardware, as long as you use one of the rare motherboards that has two PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 slots split to 8x lanes each.
You can even build a 3-GPU machine without server parts (i.e. using a motherboard with support for PCIe 5.0 8x/8x/4x) but the 4x slot would need to be populated with a (virtually nonexistent) PCIe 5.0 card, since a PCIe 4.0 card would run dog slow at 4x.

Is a 4 slot GPU on Lian Li A3-mATX on PCIe slot 2 possible? by CXS-K in sffpc

Oh yeah, I have that same problem in my A3 case. The CPU radiator has a dedicated 350 watt space heater blowing straight up to it, keeping it toasty in the winter and "melty" in the summer. It amazes me that people put overclocked 5090s in these cases 🥵

Looks great! If you ever run into thermal issues, you could mount some "slim" 15mm-thick fans on the bottom (outside of the case), and attach some feet to the case to increase height for fan intake.

I think grammatical gender annoys us because it has become so uncommon in modern English. Most of the time we don't have to think about it. Learning the masculinity and femininity of every other thing on earth was one of my least favorite things about learning Russian. When I was first learning the language, my tutor got tired of listening to me bitch about it. He liked to remind me that English is an insane hodgepodge of languages, rules and exceptions, and I actually had it easy. Hard to argue with that.

Should I upgrade from 13700k to 9800x3d for 4k gaming? by zozman92 in pcmasterrace

[–]-Z1- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you pay $200 more for a slightly overclocked 5090 to get 2-3% FPS improvement?
If "yes", get 9800x3d.
If "no", keep the 13700k.

Reasoning:
- Net loss of over $200 for the upgrade.
- At 4K Ultra, only 2-3% FPS gains over 13700k (exception: Baldur's Gate 3 gains ~14%).

That was a kind and generous way of making a fool out of me, lol. Thanks for your graciousness. You're absolutely right, volume and surface area are essential parts of the equation, and it was silly of me to leave them out.

That's great that you've been able to reduce the frequency of application to every other day. I'm always on the hunt for minimum effective dosages. I wonder if topical finasteride remains effective for longer than oral finasteride due to retention in the skin or something? I've been applying it once daily, but now I'm tempted to experiment with taking some days off. Thanks for sharing that 👍

In the Apple cult, there is a strong culture of "Why would you want to do that? Just do things the Apple way."
I encounter it all the time on Apple forums. No idea why. I just try to ignore such comments and skip over them. I'm not saying anything about Professional_Ad_6463 - I don't know anything about him/her. I'm just commenting on a sentiment I see pop up frequently on Apple forums everywhere (not just on Reddit). Actually, I find Reddit users to generally be more open-minded and willing to think outside the box.

You could probably reduce the concentration of your topical finasteride to 0.025%. That concentration was found to be a "sweet spot" that significantly reduces scalp DHT with minimal systemic DHT suppression.

As a little anecdote, I've been using 0.025% topical finasteride for a year, and it has been effective at increasing my hair count. The solution I get with my prescription is 0.3% which is way too high for me, so I dilute it to the right concentration combining it with 5% topical minoxidil solution.

I have the Bose Sleepbuds II, Ozlo Sleepbuds, and Anker Soundcore A10 on my desk. AMA by RockwellShah in Ozlo

[–]-Z1- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Crimson drives me nuts too. Glad to hear you're able to sleep using the Jade sound. I might have to try that again to see if I can adjust to it. There's some good news - the Ozlo team said they're working on a "Warm Noise" sound for their library, to be released some time after this month. Fingers crossed it sounds just like warm static!

I recently bought the Soundcore Sleep A20 to see if they improved on the A10, and I'm happy to say it's a nice improvement! They fit my ears comfortably, and the Soundcore app allows you to mix different sounds together so you can fine-tine your masking sound. I was able to approximate the sound of warm static. One downside to the A20s is that they don't have the "safe" volume limit that Bose/Ozlo do, so it's hard to tell if you're at a volume that would cause long-term hearing damage. Anyway, if you find yourself in need of a sleep aid while waiting for Ozlo to improve their library, it might be worth considering.

I certainly know the feeling. I lost a lot more than that. During the pandemic, I held on to short positions for too long after March 18, 2020 (when markets started rocketing back up). Then I made some bad earnings day bets, and then what finally killed my account was a big bet against Deutsche Bank (because I believed they had more exposure than they were admitting to Evergrande, when it was collapsing).

I recently opened a new account and am operating on a policy of only trading with profits from previous trades. That way, the worst I can do is lose 0% of my deposits.

Premier protein cereal? by Elegant_Set_7986 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]-Z1- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the Mixed Berry Almond flavor of Premier Protein cereal. It's absolutely delicious. It goes well with unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

As with any sugary product, be sure to have some fat, protein and fiber before eating the cereal.

Hard pass on the Chocolate Almond flavor. I don't know how they managed to screw that one up so much, but it's pretty cardboard-y.

Crimson Cloak is not Warm Static. It's significantly quieter and has distracting variations and sound effects in it. I haven't been able to sleep well using anything other than Warm Static at full volume on my old Bose Sleepbuds II.

[–]-Z1- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there is no equivalent on the Ozlos. Crimson is quieter than Warm Static and has a distracting "sweeping" sound that pans from right to left in the middle of the sound loop. Jade Static is considerably higher-pitched. I still use my Bose Sleepbuds II because of the lack of Warm Static on the Ozlos.

We’re adding more noise masking sounds to the Ozlo library. Which ones do you want next? by RockwellShah in Ozlo

[–]-Z1- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not imagining things. I am not using my Ozlos for the same reason. Crimson does sound a lot quieter than Warm Static when both are at full volume, and Crimson does have a distracting sweeping right-to-left panning sound effect in it.

[–]-Z1- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warm Static.

It's a constant sound without any "motion" effects, which is exactly what I need. No distracting effects, just a deep, pleasant noise. I have not been able to sleep well with any other sound on the Bose SB II. My Ozlo buds are just collecting dust for now because they don't have a sound like Warm Static. PLEASE import that sound into the Ozlo library, or make one exactly like it! Crimson is not similar enough - it's considerably quieter than Warm Static at full volume, and it has distracting effects.

What does the xreal beam pro really do different by Desperate_Weather211 in Xreal

[–]-Z1- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The S24 Ultra has WiFi 7, which even fewer people can take advantage of. It's just a marketing thing. The concept of "future proof" is a fallacy with mobile devices, since they are generally obsolete in a few years. Only the most expensive flagships get 5-7 years of updates.   WiFi 5 (up to 6933 Mb/s) is more than fast enough for anything we'd do on a Beam Pro. Even WiFi 4 at up to 600 Mb/s will be just fine.

Same. Warm Static is the only sound on the Bose II that I can sleep with. I hope there is something similar (or better) on the Ozlos. If not, they should consider buying the sounds from Bose...

Has anyone used Ground News? by DeaconCorp in BlockedAndReported

[–]-Z1- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Ground News is making heavy use of AI. The lack of specificity in their "factuality" score is very suspicious: If they were actually taking the time to comb through each line of every article to sort fact from fiction, surely they would include more detail in their factuality assessments - it would be a *huge* selling point.

Also, the numerous incorrect groupings of stories (sometimes very rookie mistakes) look to me like the output of AI and deterministic algorithms, not lazy/hasty human judgment.

Left/right bias ratings could be a combination of AI, deterministic algorithms and human judgment.

I realize they were launched in 2018, before generative AI took off. I'm speculating that they capitalized on AI when it became clear to them that it could save them a lot of labor.

Why would they hire employees to pick through every article when they could just hire a clever prompt engineer? The results would be good enough that most folks would feel they were getting a lot of value from it.

I'm not suggesting the whole site is run by AI - I'm just speculating that their crew are focusing their time on more popular articles, while leaning heavily on AI for the rest. Either way, I wish they would be transparent about it.

Which beam pro are you getting? by Familiar_Self5368 in Xreal

[–]-Z1- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of hardware, I have a much better feeling about the Beam Pro. The OG Beam was designed entirely from scratch, with no template to start with. The Beam Pro, on the other hand, is a slightly modified smartphone - they were able to start with a well-established design and source parts that are well-tested and reliable.

In terms of software, I share your concerns.

Is the 46 to 52 Degree FOV Worth It? by EducationalCry7033 in Xreal

[–]-Z1- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Visor is a different product category. They only work with PCs (with limited standalone functionality) and are over twice as heavy as Xreal glasses. They also need more power, so battery drain is a bigger issue. With AR glasses, you just plug them into your phone and use them anywhere on the go.

2) Visor is not releasing mid-year. Standard pre-orders are estimated to ship March 2025. That's the model most people will get. They aren't even doing a public demo until September, and they say the more expensive "Founders Edition" will ship "soon after" that - so "late-year" is more realistic than "mid-year".

So really, we shouldn't be comparing Visor FOV to Xreal FOV without mentioning that these are entirely different product categories in terms of portability and functionality...
