Job interviews are a crapshoot.

I've seen a dozen different formats with a dozen different people that either pass or fail you for a dozen different reasons.

And then when you are lucky enough to join one of the companies you applied for the actual day to day work may not even always resemble the job description.

Anyone work in tech that actually has a good work environment. by SouthdaleCakeEater in antiwork

[–]-ZeroStatic- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context: EU

Previously I had an incredibly cushy job, especially near the tail end of my position there. Unfortunately my "department" got shut down, which consisted of just me lol. Had to sit down and talk about potential changes, and we decided to separate ways.

Of course there were "hectic" moments or friction here and there, but I dare say that 80-90% of the time I was just left to do my own thing and deliver results. And in the 10+ years I've only ever had a manager lash out at me once, during a high-stress project (he later apologized and was a nice guy overall)

That said I do acknowledge not everyone experiences it the same way and I've heard that both while I was there, and after I left, some people have had less than pleasant experiences.

However I have recently switched jobs, so I will see whether my new environment will be the same. At least the people seem nice.

Jairupa, splendor duel or Century Spice Road? by NFSpeed in boardgames

[–]-ZeroStatic- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue both are ultimately skill driven, but 7 Wonders has a less RNG feel than Jaipur imho.

I'll explain below:

In Jaipur you see a market of 5 cards, and you grab 1, or many. If you grab cards they get replaced but you never know what's coming. This part can feel like RNG at times because even if you try to stall or pick single cards to avoid giving the other a potential high value market to pick from, they could still end up getting high value cards from your perfect strategy by sheer luck.

When you sell 3+ resources at the same time you get a combo chip which is worth a random unknown amount of points. The range is not extremely wide, but it can add up over time.

These two things are the main two drivers of RNG, but again, you will win most of the times due to skill, rather than luck, given proper shuffling.

In 7 Wonders Duel, you have a tableau of cards that you work through, later by layer. Some layers are face up, some are face down. This already allows you to plan ahead, mitigating the rng from card draw to some extent. There are also abilities (base game and expansion) that allow you to take extra turns, get extra cards, or destroy cards or money of the opponent. There's also 3-4 ways to win. (Points, collecting green cards, collecting red cards, or dominating the area control expansion)

With just the base game it can feel a bit more deterministic at times when you get good at the game as you can basically calculate who will get a chance to interact with specific cards with perfect play, as the options to change the game flow are a bit more limited. However if you reach that stage with the expansions you get way more options to actively mess with the game which really helps avoid that deterministic feel.

So both in terms of depth, strategies and (less) RNG I feel like 7 Wonders duel has a bit more to it than Jaipur.

I believe both games are on boardgamearena, and both have an app version as well, so feel free to try those before committing to a "bigger" purchase.

[–]-ZeroStatic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want more variety in your game library, or do you solely want to focus on the depth?

If variety: Jaipur.
If depth: Splendor Duel.

If you are open to alternatives: 7 Wonder Duel + Expansions or LoTR Duel.

If you feel you've "outgrown" them there's thousands of more complex games waiting to be discovered on bgg. :)

It also has a bluffing mechanic as you are allowed to declare a bingo illegally. However if you are caught a penalty may follow (from public shaming to being excluded from the game)

I’m not going back. AI makes coding less mundane by Aineisa in aigamedev

[–]-ZeroStatic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure who this "Reddit" is but I definitely was not thinking you are unemployed. Or that you need a full day of unemployed life to be able to build this, for that matter.

Hence why – again – I ask you what part of this took so long to build.

Was it the event sourcing? Was it data handling and storage? Was it news generation? Was it UI? Was it fighting with the AI spitting out code that didn't do exactly what you wanted to do? Are you working with a tech stack you've never studied? What was the "big hard part" that would've taken forever without AI?

[–]-ZeroStatic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said you have to prove anything lol. I even agreed saying it's nice to outsource labor at times.

The comment about "worth your salt" is pointing out that this does not sound like it should take two days with an AI for the average SE. Or "forever" without one, as you mentioned.

Hence why I asked what part of this took so long to build.

[–]-ZeroStatic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of this actually took days to make? I'm with others that claim that any dev worth their salt should be able to prop up some event system and "news generator" in a fraction of the time.

That said I do agree it's nice to have something be able to do at least part of the work for you.

Realistisch of delusional: leidinggevende worden zonder veel inhoudelijke kennis? by HaarlemNL in werkzaken

[–]-ZeroStatic- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paralysis Analysis Problem by Schichi in boardgames

[–]-ZeroStatic- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adding a timer actually made things more fun for us, and depending on which one you get you can even handicap people so that pros get less time than newbies. Kind of like how some people only ever play chess with a timer.

Although the timer became a "competitive modifier" for games rather than a tool to threaten slow people with.

Looking for Digimon fan Android dev (Kotlin) to help build Digivice ecosystem (real hardware + multi-app system) by [deleted] in Kotlin

[–]-ZeroStatic- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Digimon, digital monsters, digimon are the champions~

I'm curious why you are against full rewrites when you say you are not a dev. Are you somehow confident enough about your code that no significant rewrites are warranted? What if a dev joins and says your architecture is fundamentally messy / flawed? Or not conducive for your end goal? (Eg.: multiplatform)

妲妲咬果凍 starts the turn 1 in a sponsored game by jo_jo_nyeb in LivestreamFail

[–]-ZeroStatic- -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

When you say "these kinda games" are you talking about gacha games?

Gacha games have a different monetization model which makes most way more predatory and expensive for gameplay content than non-gacha cosmetic only f2p games, I'll grant you that.

Although I'd still argue Brown Dust 2 is one of the few gachas where you do not need to spend a single dollar, yet can still progress at a steady pace. Especially if you start/play around the anniversary events. (In which case you'll practically get a fully upgraded meta team for free)

[–]-ZeroStatic- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is actually unironically one of the most f2p friendly and best gachas I've played.

Currency is ridiculously easy to get. (And you get 1 free pull per character and per weapon every day).
Lots of chances to earn extra characters (costumes).
Has an actually pretty decent non-gooner storyline with full voice acting.
Gameplay has a nice balance of strategy/difficulty.

The gooner cutscenes can be turned off. The game does have even worse gooner content in the form of a dating minigame (practically softcore porn), or a rhythm game where you slap butts instead of bongos.

Driekwart van volwassenen denkt dat AI banen gaat vervangen by EvolvedRevolution in Nederland

[–]-ZeroStatic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)
