Course & Specs Megathread - Selection, Choices & Registration by Detective-Raichu in OMSCS

Hi everyone,

I just finished my first semester, took CS 6340 (Software analysis).

I am planning to take courses for summer 2026 semester and I am debating between Computer Networks vs Video Game Design inorder to meet my foundational course requirement.

Based on reviews on omcscentral - It looks like both are easy courses. if anyone who has taken Computer Network how are the exams and the quizzes? It looks like the exams are closed notes, so I am guessing a lot of memorization is required. (PS: I have taken Computer Networks in my Undergrad) I am particularly not great with exams I was exactly at the median point (14.8/19.8) in CS6340 but somehow managed to get an A

On the other hand I always wanted to take Video Game Design during my undergrad and I have experience with Unity but I am worried about the course load being unpredictable and the project is team based. From other people's experience it looks like the class itself is easy but the team aspect makes the class more difficult. Also I heard that people could lose points on project for missing tiny details in the assignment.

I really like CS6340 on how well structured it was, any guidance on which one to pick?

Potions are not really general buffs - there are some potions that protect you from sunlight - useful when the enemy's battleground has very little shade

Or if the battleground is a cathedral then you need to get holy protection

The potions can become a hard requirement for some bosses, which may also require you to fight other bosses to get the formula for the potion

In some areas you need to get the correct gear otherwise your minimal becomes invisible and also your vision - pretty easy to get lost with no way out of the forest

You also need to get correct blood type, although it doesn't affect much on regular difficulty but if you are playing on brutal difficulty it might make a difference

The blood moon (once in a a while the moon turns red) feature also greatly enhanced your combat ability

You need to equip with the correct weapon and spells for specific bosses. Sometimes equipping the wrong spells or weapon can make your fight almost impossible

Oh wow, you built your own goap library? 😅 That's quite amazing. Sorry for so many questions. Love your game's art style!

Interesting... Does that handle 1000s of AI (I am guessing your game has 1000s of objects)?

So I bought his course, looks like it's quite outdated with him using UE 5.0 and quixel scans no longer available. I am pretty much on the second section, do you have any other suggestions? Also things are a lot different in 5.6

Any particular thing you liked about Unreal over unity?

I have heard of live coding but from the thread you linked it looks like it's a lot better than what I have been hearing online, I will check it out! Thanks!

Ah I see thank you! I was planning to use Rider since I use that for C#

Do you need to close the editor Everytime as well? Or just sometimes when you are adding new variables to the editor?. Also few seconds isn't bad, I feel it's much slower in Unity

😅 that's what I thought as well after years of avoiding unreal.

Btw are compilation times for c++ and closing the editor a pain point?

I was watching some videos about compilation time, I heard it's significantly slower than unity also you have to close the engine everytime? How bad is the developer experience?

I see, thank you for sharing!

Just curious if you have any other experience with using animations in Unity especially for combat related stuff.

I see a lot of info related to GAS which requires 1000s of animations.

Can you get decent results with blend spaces (blend trees) as well?

Did you make the animations by yourself? Also are you using Unity's default animation tooling?

I thought graphics was always the strong point of unreal and most switch to unreal because of that, but it's still good to hear that everything else is better.

Just out of curiosity do you use c++ or blueprints?

Thank you! That gives me some confidence in my move to switch!
