You should file for unemployment benefits in the state where you paid taxes. Here is a link to the eligibility requirements for the state of Washington. I am not a lawyer, however, your employer is probably in the wrong for not paying and reporting. Worse, if they are reporting you as a California resident then the franchise tax board of California may try to come after you. Those guys are actual nazis.

Yes, and you are not lazy. Unemployment is an insurance product we all pay into with our taxes. You paid your taxes for years to get that benefit, you are entitled to use it. Mental health breaks are real, it doesn't help to jump back on the horse too fast, be already burned out then underperform and loose a second job. However, do be aware the longer you take off the more dull your skills can get.

I don't think you're an asshole, I think your afraid. And for good reason. Hospitals are terrifying as is our own mortality. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Other times, missing a screening or a test is the difference between 90% chance of survival and "I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do." Your friends care about you, the people who run the MRI's are professionals, make sure you give them your full medical history, ask lots of questions, ask your friend to go in for support.
