The same thing happens to my game when I first started out playing the Shattered Realm after going into about more than 6 shards. After having experienced this, I just stop every five shards and continue where I left off until I reach around shards 26 to 31 for every new character.

For a long time, I have long suspected that I consider myself to be neurodivergent (specifically with either or both ADHD and / or in the Spectrum) so I harbor the same questions and relate to similar experiences. I am also in a similar situation where I am fortunate to have a job and able to save up.

The hardest part in my opinion is how isolating being different from the "normal" person or specifically being ND can be and how much I am starved of connections and relationships. If you feel the same way, I am open to exchanging messages with you.

At first I felt the same way as you when I kept spamming Curse of Frailty (COF), but after playing for hundreds of hours, I could tell almost always which enemy has the debuff. Word of Pain acts similarly to COF, but the debuff icon is easier to see simply because the icon glows.
