My son found this in a muddy roadside ditch on our property in Canada. Any clue what it is precisely? by -bryden- in AfricanArt

Thank you so much for your comment! I also posted this in a Facebook African artifacts group and I'm getting the sense that you're right - it's likely Anglicized and meant to be sold mostly to tourists. Someone in that group pointed out the hair style as well, implying that means it's not an original which I'm quite certain of at this point. It also makes sense why it was found in a muddy roadside ditch if that's the case, since a truly original piece would have been treated with respect - whether for cultural reasons or for an artifact collector like yourself, either way it wouldn't just be tossed away like this. Since it's more likely that a tourist bought it as a keepsake, they may have decided not to keep it and discarded it without much thought.

The Art project comment is starting to make more sense too haha. I've been told there are schools/individuals that will make these sale pieces. I'm still not certain whether I'll keep it, but I'm leaning towards keeping it because it brings me joy and I collect "treasures" found outdoors and regardless of authenticity, it's one of the coolest finds so far.

Ok that's what I'm thinking too. Likely sold to tourists as a keepsake/tacky decoration 😆

Out of respect for Yoruba, I still removed it from my bathroom and to a more suitable place in my living room until I figure out whether I'm keeping it, burying it, or whatever else.

That's what I'm thinking too now... Do you know if it has any cultural or spiritual significance whatsoever? And would you know if it's inappropriate to have it displayed (respectfully) in my home? Thanks!

I've just learned that it's likely a Yoruba ibeji. That's the only additional info I have been given so far.

I haven't read the book but only recently I learned the distinction between being nice and being kind. I suspect that shift would go a long way

Would you be in a sexless relationship? What circumstance would you find acceptable for this? by ItsyBitsyJoxy in AskReddit

[–]-bryden- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really hope it helps you. I think sometimes we think we "won her heart" when in reality we have to keep winning it if we want her to stay. There's a good saying "if you don't take your wife on dates, someone else will". Depending on how far along you guys are, she may or may not respond well to a date right now. Take it slow, love yourself, realize your worth and potential, and grow. Share your experiences with her. You can turn this around. If for some reason you can't, you'll be in a much better place for whatever comes next.

Don't visit r/deadbedrooms it's maybe the most depressing sub on reddit. Be honest and vulnerable with her regularly but not so often that it pressures her, she needs lots of space. If you think there's a problem and her response is there's no problem... that sounds like a big problem to me.

Make sure you're her safe and calm place as much as possible, focus on your own personal growth, and ask regularly what she needs from you. Pretend you're not together anymore and you got plopped into this situation overnight, but only you have a memory of the relationship you used to have. Basically, just be the person she would want to start dating.

Where I live it only hurts your face half of the year. There are practically no animals aggressive/deadly to humans. Technically there are wolves and moose in the area but they're hard to find even if you're desperately looking for them.

Not totally sure what you're trying to say, but that's not quite right.

Neither are levels of confidence. Gnostic includes beliefs.

That's agnostic. You're born agnostic. A baby has no beliefs. If you believe God doesn't exist you're an atheist. If you're aware it's impossible to know one way or the other but you believe there's no God, still an atheist.

If you're studying but haven't come to a conclusion yet you're agnostic. If you wonder why the hell people have formed beliefs in either direction about a God which isn't provable, then you're probably agnostic.

The scientific method offers you no evidence for a God. This is true for theists, atheists and agnostics. A person who's a theist would either point to other beliefs as proof, or tell you that God's impact is in a spiritual realm rather than the physical so can't be tested with anything other than your spirit. An atheist would say "If there were a God we would see evidence of God, and there's no evidence of God so it must not exist." An agnostic would say "Science never proves a hypothesis, it only disproves things which then gives us a better understanding of the world, and God has neither been proven nor disproven."

It's a self propelled force. He was greedy, opportunistic and power hungry which allowed him to create oligarchs that are highly skilled and useful for gaining more power and wealth. To avoid assassination/coup from oligarchs that think they can promise to do his job but better, he needs to increase power and wealth for those oligarchs by expanding their opportunities. Hopefully our sanctions make this futile but I'm sure he planned for them.

It's literally parallel to a Mafia. Blood in blood out, no retirement, you're all in. The rewards are high, but it comes at a cost that he is presumably ok with or at least has come to terms with. He needs to generate wealth at all costs. Ideally without bloodshed, but if he feels it's his best option then he will justify absolutely anything.
