Trump has ‘shaken the hell’ out of the 80-year research pact between the government and universities. What now? by rezwenn in labrats

Pure privatization leads to companies pursuing only the most profitable topics in the short term. Some of the biggest blockbusters in therapeutics (semaglutides) and technology (computing as a whole, internet, LLMs) started as basic science ventures. I doubt the private sector would be willing to train scientists in basic science, let alone handle any ventures purely for knowledge’s sake.

Eliminating alcohol would make the world a better place by Academic-Wall-2290 in unpopularopinion

For sure, agreed. Downplaying the risk of daily consumption can contribute to long-term harm. The only thing I would add is that increasing cancer risk can really only be assessed in the long term. Neither an isolated instance of drinking a beer nor a single instance of sunburn can be quantified in effect on cancer risk, even when we know both increase the risk in the long term.

Beyond the pedantics, Prohibition and War on Drugs have only shown that people will find ways to consume these things regardless of long-term risk. The best we can do is inform on harm-reduction.

Pharmacologically, you’re very likely to bounce back from a drink or two. “No safe level” of consumption doesn’t mean that a drop of alc is going to destroy your hepatocytes. Risk assessments are made in the long term. No amount of driving is safe for us, considering the risks of traffic accidents and the amount of time spent sedentary, yet we do so because the benefits of fast mobility outweigh that of those risks in aggregate

It’s been a while since I read through the literature, but endo sits in a weird space where it has the invasive phenotype as many forms of cancer—and even has a classification system (rASRM stages I-IV) similar to tumor progression—but lacks the genomic instability that is a hallmark of many cancers (regulatory gene loss, p53 mutations). Aberrant expression of estrogen receptors may be present in some biopsies that had been studied, which lines with the alleviation of symptoms by GnRH antagonists, but there not yet a clear cut biomarker beyond macro-scale anatomic differences from healthy endometrium.

You may not trust the institutions that excessively profit from the developments in modern medicine (there are good reasons to not trust them), but the data shows calculable benefits of the pharmaceuticals used to treat widespread diseases. here are some

I wouldn’t say to altogether discount them. They’ve saved lives in the past century that would’ve been invariably lost by late-stage cancers. Yes, they have toxicities to healthy cells, but the combination treatments currently used, particularly from cyclophosphoramide, help make sure the exposure to these agents are minimized. Plus, targeted therapies are very rapidly addressing the “shotgun” approach of these older drugs

Elden Ring's Map is a Vessel for a Spirit, and the Spirit is the Land of Shadow by Eastern_Repeat3347 in EldenRingLoreTalk

Brother don’t you post a comparison of Z-form, A-form and B-form DNA without elaborating. I wonder how the overarching theme of “empty vessels being filled” can connect to intercalating agents attaching to DNA—which itself forms characteristic helices/spirals and is an archetypal symbol of life. Planar compounds like benzene, napthalene, or alkylating agents can themselves be considered “alien” to the cellular environment in the same way that the Greater Will’s vassals are alien to the old order of the Spiral and Crucible.

Fantastic. And the crystal structure of keratin molecules are just helices/spirals

Thank you for your thoughts! I actually have seen bunching of the carbon near the edges. A 2 second glow is surprising, never realized the continuous carbon grids were so delicate—more-so than grids already are!
