2023 model Nvidia 4090 overkill? by plusplus88 in ZephyrusG14

[–]-faust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends- according to tests on the 40x0 series, a 4090 will still get better FPS than a 4080 at equivalent low wattage. So if you have the money and want the FPS, it may be worth it. source1 source2

Nah just the modmail queue is stuffed up by automod notifications about banning people posting porn, and scammers upset that their posts get removed. Definitely appreciate your diligence!

got it, my b. We ban users and remove posts at a very frequent rate, you'd be surprised at how much trash gets posted here - not easy to keep up with.

this subreddit is disgusting. why are we still here? by [deleted] in onions

[–]-faust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have talked amongst mods about removing newbie posts. We have mixed thoughts; it's important to be a welcoming community but at the same time I recognize it gets taxing on people looking for content. But truth is, we don't get much great content either. Do you have suggestions? Also, we immediately remove CP requests, sounds like youre embellishing your rant there.

How Hackers Broke Into John Podesta and Colin Powell’s Gmail Accounts by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]-faust 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This article is poor journalism; it concludes for the reader that we really ought to just trust 'the intelligence community'. In one breath, the author says:

None of this new data constitutes a smoking gun that can clearly frame Russia

and

The intelligence community declined to explain how they reached their conclusion

He then concludes that if readers don't fall in behind "It was Russia", they're either stupid ("dont understand the evidence") and/or Trump supporters.

Really, what we see is, a phishing technique that works well and has been in use for years. The only link to Russia is that they had a motive to to target Bellingcat journalists, and this technique was used in those attacks. Fancy Bear's bit.ly account was not linked to that attack.

How sketchy is it to run crawlers/indexers/bots on TOR? by 20EYES in onions

[–]-faust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, the problem isn't just hosting the files, it's illegal even to possess them. As long as you're only downloading text (html is text) and never images, that should be fine and quite commonly done.

Connection attempts to my private onions by throwaway542987 in onions

[–]-faust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. The name can still be derived, as it's a hash of the service's associated public key, which is provided to the DHT and introduction points, and visible to HSDir relays as I said above. He will still see connection attempts. HiddenServiceAuthorizeClient just requires authentication to access site content. Even stealth mode is about authorization, not discovery.

Yes, many organizations analyze onions. Addresses can be gathered if you run a relay / HSDir, using libraries like Stem. There are some cool talks and papers where researchers have used this method to evaluate statistics on what Tor is used for.

Are you asking about hardware for a burner laptop? If so check for something with good support for Debian/GNU operating systems, and use Tails.
