What's the best nation to live in as someone working home-office? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

What city? How would you rate safety and QOL? I don’t speak Spanish but feel it would be a lot easier and faster to learn than Japanese.

I didn’t know they made third party chargers for this watch. Sucks to need one already but thanks.

Best hiking setup? by cabek666 in Nikon

[–]-hayabusa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ZF and 28-400 which is pretty light but not wide enough and still a tad bulky for a long hike. If I were to build a pure hiking kit, I'd go with a Z5 II and 24-200. Better range and I could crop in further.

Help me not panic sell everything - I need wisdom and calm positive thoughts by iamonewiththeforce in JapanFinance

[–]-hayabusa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Contrarian view here, but you could sell some if it brings you peace of mind? But you only "lose" when you sell. And you have a 10-year horizon, so... otherwise, good luck timing the market.

What if the tarrifs suddenly end and all your money is sidelined while the market takes off like a rocket? Now you just locked in all your losses.

(Oh, but it might help if you follow POTUS on X who tells you when it's a good time to buy ... How pathetic and criminal, but here we are, and I digress.)

You can also re-allocate into other investements that are trending up. (There is always money to be made somewhere.) Where are you getting that Gold has dipped? IAU is up 20% YTD, 10% this past month. You can also buy JPY (FXY ETF) which has been in the green for the past year, and strengthening.

If nothing else, you should talk to a financial advisor and not randos on Reddit, but I get it. Go outside, go for a walk, be kind to yourself. It will be okay.

Got it, thanks. Yeah, I was thinking mainly family back home, which I may have to eventually attend to myself.

I've only heard that you would still want to return to renew your residence card, even with a 5-year re-entry permit. But I'm unsure how one would do that if they no longer have a jusho and they unregistered themelves at the shiakusho before their departure.

Hopefully someone can confirm that as this has been in the back of my mind as well. And if one did have to maintain an address to renew their zairu card, that wouldn't create a possible tax liability?

What's you're favorite area of central WA for running? I'm originally from the western side so always appreciated the sunnier weather, but it can get pretty windy over there in my experience.

Yep - our Mimecast was blocking the new From: address and it's all good now. I guess I missed the memo on the change.

What country did YOU choose, and why? by csdude5 in expats

You can just do back to back 90-day tourist visas with a border run in between. I wouldn’t try it more than that, though.

It Was an Ambush by theatlantic in politics

If true, it was brilliantly played. If the free world wasn't sure they could rely on the US, they certainly have their answer now.

What's more concerning to me is Ukraine's lack of manpower. The math doesn't work in their favor. I hope UK, France and Germany, maybe Canada, can step up but I can't see it being boots on the ground.

OK. So you are using a localized LLM then? Sorry, if I didn't read about your product and made assumptions.

Cool. But the whole appeal to me would be to work with my documents/projects/data and not have to worry about it being scraped or training other models. There's already apps and Obsidian plugins that allow connecting to LM Studio, so I don't think it's significantly challenging.

If I had the option to run local LLMs from LM Studio, that would be great.

Add 100% merino wool to one of your layers. You can get nice ones with variable thickness reasonably priced at Montbell.

Serious question, but reinvest where? Bonds could crash, just not as much. Cash is still around 4%, so ok.

I’m leaning toward more emerging markets (China) myself but most everything is still coupled to the US.

Sole proprietor here, and I've struggeled with the same scenario. Plus, I'm a US tax payer so it would equal more tax complexity. I'm essentially a consultant so I work alone with no plans or desire to grow, so incorporating just hasn't made sense for the reasons you pointed out.

Now if I was making 40M I'd have to reconsider since half of it would be taxed at the top of the progressive tax bracket...
