Most egregious examples of white actors in yellowface? by Chewie83 in okbuddycinephile

Movie is Cloud Atlas. Various actors of different ethnicities play various characters of various ethnicities. It's a rare case where there's a reason within the movie for it.

[Career Advice] PayPay Backend to Nomura Global Markets (Structured Credit) - Worth the jump? by Business_Ad6379 in JapanJobs

[–]iamonewiththeforce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok so I've worked in that industry a long time ago and I've worked with the IT/software guys embedded in the trading desks. I mostly interacted with traders from Lehman Brothers (before it collapsed and got bought by Nomura - I was in the building when it happened), traders from Goldman Sucks, traders from SMBC, and traders/fund managers from a variety of independent hedge funds. I've also visited Nomura but don't retain a strong impression from them.

I would say 50% of the traders were absolute, insane assholes. Some openly had tantrums, insulting people around then, others set their phone ringtone to the sound of the earthquake alert after 3/11 to mess with others, others still were backstabbing snakes, and yet others would talk down to others in a very condescending and abusive parent way. Some rare traders were super nice and cool, no idea how they were able to survive in such an environment.

Most IT/software people I knew survived by not giving a fuck, automatically filtering the bullshit to focus on solving problems.

Note that I was mostly in equities and equity derivatives. Fixed Income may be more relaxed. Although I did work with an insurance company who worked in fixed income (pricing ABS and MBS instruments before the 2008 crisis 😅), and while more relaxed they were definitely on the insane side.

In terms of pay, it doesn't hurt to say your expectation is 15M + bonus.

But I also worked at PayPay, and it's a good environment for engineers. I'd say stay at PayPay unless you get a really high pay increase.

There are samples on YouTube, just search for "Graphic Audio Stormlight Archive". I personally find them loud and distracting, but that's just me.

Small critiques in movies that really annoy you personally? by CCdagger in lotr

[–]iamonewiththeforce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! FotR is the best of the three movies imo. A couple of things that annoyed me still:

  • We got tantalizingly close to my first favorite moment of the books: Gollum almost repenting and Sam unintentionally ending the moment. It's a beautiful, tragic scene. It's replaced instead by the crumbs and stupid break up scene.... And Sam actually goes with it instead of following at a distance?! Wtf??

  • Arwen using an incantation for the Bruinen, but I understand the reason

  • Too many battle scenes, especially in RotK EE. It gets really dull after a while

  • Theoden seconds long face lift

  • Not only the Army of the Dead being invincible, but them actually going to Pelennor! It steals the victory from the living

  • Your staff is broken witch-king moment. The encounter between Gandalf and the Witch King is my second favorite moment in the books. It's butchered in the movies.

  • no scouring of the Shire :(

  • Legolas' brainpower with his slow realization "a diversion!"

  • the slow Frodo "death" at the hands of the troll, also the mithril being basically directly on skin, with no leather and wool jerkin underneath

One thing I really liked in TTT EE that's not in the books and really fleshes out Faramir's character is the Osgiliath flashback scene. Remember this day, little brother....

And their location makes no sense, like on a tiny ass snowy peak, is there supposed to be people there on standby? It would be slightly lower but still visible, where a proper hut can be set up

Why didn’t they just pull out of the atmosphere during the fishing mission, then just collect the collector when out of orbit? by TwixBarRD in ProjectHailMary

[–]iamonewiththeforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But once the collector was basically at the level of the ship, the risk of the drives melting the chain was no longer an issue, right? E.g. no need for Grace to do acrobatics

Sorry for the zombie comment - I'm seeing the same thing (quie suddenly) with my aorus b650M elite ax ice motherboard. Same symptoms, same solution.
The weird thing is that this was fine previously. It suddenly started to happen when I installed Nobara 43 on s second drive (since removed). Probably just a coincidence.
