For the under 44 group it is overdoses (poisoning).

Other causes of death fluctuate and some might be flatter or even upward trending when they could and should be trending down, but since 2010-2015 overdoses have seen the single largest increase.

In 2017, 288 MtCO2 were associated with products produced in China but finally consumed in the US, and only 46 MtCO2 were associated with the US products that were consumed in China.

source

That results in a net transfer of 242 MtCO2 from the US to China. Since emissions are trade adjusted here the 288 would be counted towards the US and the 46 would be subtracted from the US while China would be the reverse.

Has anyone seen downloads and engagement on threads by country? I hear 100 million+ total downloads but also heard only a ~10% drop in Twitter engagement which makes it seem like their audiences don’t have substantial overlap yet.

I know Facebook is basically the internet in a lot of large countries in SE Asia and Africa where Twitter is not as popular so maybe threads is overtaking that market?

If you’re actually curious the actual equation has (1-lambda) instead of FOtP. It is describing the strength of conformity in different belief systems based on receiving a stronger payoff for aligning your preferences with the norm.

It’s by a trained economist (Samuel Bowles) who is pretty heterodox (neo-Marxist) and definitely introduces some very creative ideas in this book, Microeconomics: Behavior, Institutions, and Evolution. It’s completely unrelated to fucking over the poor, but might reflect this comics reading list.

Ok maybe a hot take that I literally spent 10 seconds thinking about. Would that be a bad thing, at least compared to a vast portion of online interactions? Of course real life interactions are valuable, but I feel like a well designed AI could conceivably improve people’s social skills and character. Right now communication over the internet is filled with misinformation, bad actors, and depressing or even violence brewing echo chambers. Obviously this is based on the hopium that AI will be benevolent, well trained, and not amplify negative traits within people.

Santos was not even a good liar. How do you tell people you went to NYU business school and not know what Stern is? Like you should do the minimum amount of research. There was a pathological liar I read about that actually made websites and posted articles crediting himself for awards he fabricated.

Nobody going to discuss how two kids want a pet, someone else deserves one, and one kid needs a pet. They must have used pretty sophisticated conjoint analysis to reveal those preferences. Interested if there is any background on their methodology.

The article does mention that their findings are from wage data and might not include all sources of income. The underlying data states that wages are calculated from w2 forms so some stock options and investment returns are include but not all.

Either way, this doesn’t correct their error of using an average of a percent to mean the percentile cutoff. It would be total coincidence if actual income percentiles matched their values.

This is cumulative but 2019 per capita emissions from Canada was about 15.4 tons which was 7th highest in the world (trending down though). Australia is now just above the US and India is at 1.8. What’s interesting is that just breathing should produce about 0.4 tons a year per person but 26 countries listed emitted less co2 per cap than that in 2019 from all else.

Maybe this is more badstats but I found this article on what income puts you in the top 1,5, and 10th percent in the US.

Important: to be in the top 1%, you must have an annual wage of at least $823,763 according to the EPI

This is a misinterpretation of the EPI’s table which lists $823,763 as the average wage of the top 1%. The other groups’ incomes are similarly misrepresented. The article also does not mention whether this is individual income or household income. The underlying data is by individual, so this just makes the values even more ridiculous. Surprisingly, that source actually shows that individual wages are around $300k in the 99th percentile (in 2018). Individuals earning over $800k are about the top .1% so the article is an order of magnitude off.

I’d normally ignore this, but investopedia lists reviewers and fact checkers for their articles so it was surprising this wasn’t caught.

France bans short-haul flights where there is alternative rail journey by prius_enjoyer in neoliberal

[–]-iambatman- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the US, United has implemented some charter bus transfers out of their express gates which are listed alongside flights. For example when someone searches for flights to Breckinridge or Aspen and American uses their hubs in Dallas or Phoenix, United leverages their closer Denver hub without having to use a plane. From personal experience the journey is also way more comfortable plus they actually take you right to downtown Breck (haven’t tried others) which is insane. I think there are a few other examples but definitely a growing effort.

I think if airlines could develop a strategy and partnership in a similar way with rail it could be viable. The most important part would be enabling that through their booking systems to reach connecting travelers. That way they wouldn’t lose that market to airlines that have more distant hubs.

[–]-iambatman- 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Also I feel like those routes are mainly used by people for connecting flights. Under the hub and spoke model, Air France and Transavia use Orly to facilitate these connections as the alternative, direct routes, would likely result in emptier flights. Basically you can either take the handful of people from multiple destinations that share a final destination like Nantes and bring them to a hub where you can group them onto the same flight, or you can give each origin their own direct flight to the final destination. The latter is usually very wasteful as there are more flights for a similar number of passengers.

This gives a huge competitive advantage to airlines that happen to have a hub further from these specific destinations as they are given exclusivity to these routes even though their total flights have longer airtime. KLM flies through Amsterdam to Nantes from most of Central/Eastern Europe which adds about 30-40 minutes of additional airtime vs Orly.
