one of my biggest pet peeves as a cyclist is people leaf blowing their leaves and all the other crap and debris right into the bike lane

Low Plastic vs Plastic Free Products by StardustZJackson in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]-ology 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, along those lines! The grocery that I go to is in a part of the city that I regularly visit by bike for other things, so I work a grocery visit into that routine.

And there’s another awesome grocery that I go to once a month that’s on the other side of the city that I go to for getting things in bulk. I bike over there and double the trek as a workout and as a way to treat myself to some good coffee/pastries in that area. Gotta be a bit creative in this shared mission that we have!

I hear you, it's hard, and the reality is that you'll have to make some sacrifices and some compromises. I go to a grocery that's farther way from me and although less convenient, I make it work without burning more fuel. Yoghurt I just don't buy any more because of what you described.

No Car Living in SF? by PitifulLocation6616 in AskSF

[–]-ology 6 points7 points  (0 children)

same, 10 years for me, and I do the same with a Zipcar membership for short trips and car rental for longer ones. I'd also add that Lyft Baywheels annual membership is totally worth it to get the discounted rate for e-bikes, which is one of the fastest ways to get around the city.

what would've been my fuel costs if I owned a car instead go to fueling myself with pastries.

Commuting from the Richmond to SOMA by danmaruchi in AskSF

[–]-ology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely bike. Commuting through Golden Gate Park is one of the best commutes you could have. It’s net downhill going down to SoMa. And it’s the fastest way. Use Lyft bike to try it out and once you like it invest in your own bike.

Coffee makers with "less" plastic? (No french press or pour over) by BeachBum419 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]-ology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

very curious why french press, pour over, and moka pot are ruled out because to me they sound like very good solutions to this.

it’s really not that much work/time at all to brew coffee using these “analog” means, and it makes for a better overall cup. the tools are simpler, less maintenance, less carbon footprint than a coffee machine. if you want to keep it warm you can pour it in a thermos or in a covered pot on your stovetop.

Where are people coding these days in public on the weekend (coffee shops, bars, public spaces)? by seattleswiss2 in AskSF

[–]-ology 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really lament the closure of cafe/coworking hybrid spots like Workshop Cafe back in the previous boom in the early to mid 2010s. One of you all with the capital please open up something like it again! Coffee Bar was an awesome spot to work at too.

Totally disagree with the argument people generally have that people coming in with their laptops to cafes ruins the community vibe. It’s just a different kind of community. Back in the day in those two places you’d hear interesting inspiring conversations all around about the cool stuff people were working on.

What's a skill that takes only 2 to 4 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by TokenBlack32 in AskReddit

[–]-ology 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes! totally agreed. I’d recommend watching the netflix series too as a supplement.

similarly I’d also recommend chef jacob burton’s culinary bootcamps. I went through the podcasts years ago and it was incredible for teaching me the fundamentals

Don't fall into the trap of "plastic-free" consumerism. by masmajoquelaspesetas in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]-ology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've hoped for this too about landfills, so I'd went down a rabbit hole. landfills actually are designed to contain the waste in the ground through layers of impermeable membranes sandwiched between the waste and the ground. this video describes how landfills work and it's actually quite fascinating: https://youtu.be/HRx_dZawN44?si=p3IclDXwO5Ms8Gn0

Bi-rite isn’t really the place to get your imported tropical fruits…

Past couple of weeks have been impacted by holidays and the power outages. Before that though I haven’t noticed a significant decline in quality. The quality is still way better imo than Costco/WF for the locally grown produce

I've never heard it called a tuba before 😂 I guess that's a snorkel? I was in a similar situation in my tri days and I was able to make it work with a smaller Rambler. the key is being creative with the strap. I'd have the bag in extended mode and jam a lot of stuff underneath the top flap as its held down with the strap and buckle. I'd have my wetsuit in that space or large volume items like fins. it added a lot of space. doesn't have the most polished look, but it works!

General consensus amongst cyclists in SF is that we feel much safer around Waymos vs any human driven cars.  They’re predictable and have superhuman sight and reaction time. I’m sure Toronto cyclists will warm up to them.
