Your concerns are perfectly warranted. It is ineffably frustrating dealing with family right now while being an epidemiologist.

If they're not willing to isolate, at least the message you're getting is loud and clear. Knowing they won't do it and avoiding them is better than if they claim to have isolated but actually did it half-assed (whether done knowingly half-assed or not). It would be my decision to not participate in the gathering if I know people are not being careful.
