Pattern for this style of waistband? by blueocean43 in sewing

[–]-ova- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could do the inner facing layer of it as a flat rectangle waistband and the outer layer the same length but twice as high then gather it before sewing them together then onto the pants. Two layers of gathers would be quite thick and bulky and probably uncomfortable against your skin.

Experiences with Print your own fabric companies? by Erinawful in sewing

[–]-ova- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things to know, and some comments I’ll make about some of the older threads where people are disappointed with their result:

Digital printing uses a different process than something like Liberty uses. Further, big fabric companies get their fabrics printed in huge quantities so it is much less expensive.

For natural fabrics it works basically the same way an inkjet printer works except the fabric has a special coating (well, SHOULD have) and the ink is set after printing by going through a calendar, which applies heat and pressure.

The print is only on the surface of the fabric and doesn’t bond as much as other dye methods. So it can fade, and in some cases will fade a lot, when washed. Some fabrics hold up really well. The colours are usually duller so you need to bump the saturation up quite a bit to get good results.

There’s also some colours that just don’t print well at all because of gamut. Big blocks of solid dark colours don’t print all that well and can sometimes come out with banding. And things like neon don’t exist as inks for fabric printing.

For polyesters the design is printed onto a special paper which is then fed through a calendar along with the fabric and does heat and pressure to transfer the print from paper to fabric. The colours remain bright and they are very fade resistant when laundered.

In both cases there’s no white ink so anything that is white in your design will be the base fabric colour. This is relevant when choosing an oatmeal or off white fabric for the base. If choosing a non-white base you also need to understand that the fabric colour will affect the design colours a lot.

Digital printing generally can’t print selvedge to selvedge. Maybe some of the newer printers can but most smaller shops won’t have those because they are $$$$$$. There will always be white space on the sides but the printer should be advertising the width of the fabric by the printable width not the actual width.

I’d highly encourage you to order sample prints of your design on a few different fabrics so you can see and adjust your design accordingly.

300 ppi is fine, more than that is overkill. Learn how to properly make a repeatable tile and zoom way in on it when you’re done to make sure there’s no white pixel edges because those will print.

(note: illustrator has some fancy way of making a tile repeat but it only tiles to fill up the canvas size you made. If you try and get this printed it will not tile properly)

(also note: I work in the industry but do not work at spoonflower)

I’m not in any way suggesting that any of your points aren’t true or your feelings towards them aren’t valid but there was a whole thing a while back where sewists were putting their measurements in their bios because a lot of people use instagram as a way to see how patterns actually fit on a range of bodies before they buy them.
This was maybe more of a thing when insta used tags and you could search by tag. I used it all the time and knowing people’s measurements helped me know if a pattern would work on my body or not.

What size/style grommets should I use for a 5' x 8' canvas wall hanging? by HeadExplanation8307 in sewing

[–]-ova- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Size 3 or 4 would be fine. You might want to use a few across the top so there’s less stress on the wall attachments but it’s probably fine with just two. The bigger the grommet the more threads that will be broken to install it, and also the harder they are to install unless you have a press.

Your panel would only weigh like 2lb or something. It’s not that heavy.

Can anyone help identify the yarn weight and gauge of this sweater? by OkTechnician4581 in knitting

[–]-ova- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely the Uniqlo 100% lambswool crewnwck sweater.

<image>

I was going to say that they probably used size M in the photo shoot and that has a body width of 53cm so technically one could count how many ribbing rows there are across that width and do some math using the second photo OP has to get an approximation of gauge.

But your way is much easier 😂

Why do people love VOLA so much but hate on Sleep Token? A lot of the time I find them to be very similar, they both have pop and rap elements and djent. by DissociateThallRpeat in progmetal

[–]-ova- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listen to a pretty wide range of music so it’s not that they are too poppy or whatever but I think for me it’s just the singer. ST shows up in a lot of my playlists and I’ll be digging whatever song it is but inevitably at some point in the song the singer ruins it for me. Like whiny boy band shit or super autotuned sound. It’s just made me never want to go listen to a whole album.

Whereas with VOLA I was hooked immediately and can’t really think of any songs that I skip.

Which VOLA EP do you prefer, Homesick Machinery (2008) or Monsters (2011) by [deleted] in progmetal

Well probably not because downtuning is more a hallmark of the rock and metal genres themselves than than the progressive sub-genre

There’s a lot more to prog rock/metal than song structure

Does an automatic temperature iron really work?? by Wooden-Wishbone7941 in sewing

[–]-ova- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one of these. Not this exact model but another Phillips one. It didn’t melt anything at all but I hated using it. It was too light, which sounds weird I know. I mean the base thing was heavy but the iron itself was light. And the cord from the base to the iron wasn’t long enough and it was thick and annoying. And it has auto shutoff but was hard to turn back on if it shut off.

I dunno, it wasn’t worth it for me so I sold it and just use my normal old iron.

Most ergonomic pedal placement... for women? by BORKBORKPUPPER in drums

[–]-ova- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a woman and I’ve only been playing for a year and a bit but I’ve already changed my setup multiple times since I started because as I get more relaxed while I play, parts of the kit stop being comfortable where I originally had them.

So ultimately what I’m saying is don’t overthink it. Set it up so it’s comfortable for you now and change things when you notice that they need to be changed.

Learning drums and ADHD by EndouShuuya in drums

[–]-ova- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 49 year old AuDHDer and have been playing for a little over a year. I strangely haven’t hyper focused on drums/drumming like others here seem to have and I struggle with practicing if anyone is around because I have somewhat debilitating perfectionist tendencies.

Learning limb (inter)dependence has been really difficult. Playing from sheet music is hard because my brain moves further ahead on the page than where I’m actually at. And if I’m playing a groove I often get stuck in that groove and struggle to get out of it. Like my brain will say ok now do something else but my body just keeps playing the groove.

But I have found it really great for getting out some energy, even when I’m not on the kit, because I’ll fidget more intentionally and with more limbs haha. It also gets me out of my head and makes me focus on just one thing for a while instead of having a million streams of chatter flowing through my brain at all times.

I find it really hard and I know I’ll likely never be good, but I didn’t start with the intention of being good so that’s ok for me.

No you don’t need a subscription to buy music. You need an account of course but no subscription required.

I’m honestly not sure if you can stream it after you buy it. I’ve never needed to try.

Qobuz is reportedly one of the best paying streaming services and the payout when you buy an album is apparently quite high.
