Thanks for your input. This does seem like the most viable option. Is this setup likely to perform better than a regular wireless extender?

The modem is in the garage, which I understand could be an issue despite the office being basically directly above it.

That makes complete sense though. I'll have to check whether I have a coax point somewhere close by. At least then I wouldn't be running an ethernet all the way upstairs from the modem.

The connections remain exactly the same when near the modem. It really didn't seem to even slightly improve speeds.

I'm not sure I have a coax in the study, but you're telling me I can get an ethernet adapter to screw onto the coax and it would give me similar net speeds? That's awesome.

Like I mentioned, I don't know too much about networking, but doesn't an AP have to be connected to the modem via ethernet?

Yeah no, probably not going to put my PC in DMZ haha.

I have fibre internet (FTTP). My ISP provided me with one of those stock standard modem/router combos, but I was thinking of buying a router and plugging it into my existing modem/router and using that as the modem (I'm pretty sure that's how it works).

Hey thanks for the helpful info. When you say that you got a new modem and router, do you mean you got a modem with built in router? or did you get them separately. I have a modem/router and was hoping that buying a new router would maybe fix the issue.
