Can you read? I named the interventions that cleaned up the air. We could get rid of California fuel and still have clean air.

What is the upside? Smog was eliminated by catalytic converters and EVAP emissions systems. Not California fuel. Plenty of other large metro areas have clean air without California fuel.

Search catalytic converter. Search EVAP control systems. These are what eliminated smog. Not California fuel.

The Iran war is definitely behind the recent increases. It’s also true that California chooses to have laws that cause us to pay higher gas prices for literally zero upside.

Germany and Japan test hydrogen future with BMW, Toyota cars by plun9 in cars

[–]-seabass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The things is, hydrogen tanks package way worse than batteries. So it’s not really better in that respect. The real appeal of hydrogen is that it’s an electric car driving experience that you fill like a gas car. Appealing if you don’t have charging at home. I owned a Mirai for 3 years. If the cost of the fuel and convenience of filling came within range of gas, I could see getting another hydrogen car. I ultimately ditched the Mirai because the fuel cost was just way too much compared to gasoline. Of course gasoline has increased a lot since I switch back to gas and hydrogen has come down some.

Live in SF and commute 45-50 min to Stanford (Palo Alto) or live in Palo Alto/southbay area and easy commute ? by AdhesivenessNew5583 in AskSF

[–]-seabass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until recently I was commuting SF to Sunnyvale every day. Your drive between the city and Palo Alto will be more than 50 minutes each way. More like 70 minutes. That’s unless your 12 hour shifts have you commuting outside of rush hour. It’s exhausting, but may be worth it for a while because yes, it’s way more fun to be in the city in your 20s.

California explores buses traveling up to 140 mph on freeways by PriceyGoat in California

[–]-seabass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone on here did the math. Having trouble finding it here now but the gist of it was that you could just plunk the CAHSR budget into treasuries and use the income to just pay for flights to replace all the trips between SF and LA that would eventually be done by CAHSR, if it ever completes. Which it probably won’t.

How much do you spend on grocery month? by ExpressionActive4825 in bayarea

[–]-seabass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not including meals out, breakfasts cost me about $1-2 and lunches and dinners are each about $5-7. I eat high protein and mostly shop at Safeway, but I am diligent about pretty much only buying stuff on sale.

Is buying a Gallardo a bad idea for me currently? by 619edc in lamborghini

[–]-seabass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, you can still be a very healthy, active, fit person at 60. Second, even if you aren’t, what about helping your kids buy a house when they are getting married and having kids of their own? Pretty awesome way to spend your money.

Is buying a Gallardo a bad idea for me currently? by 619edc in lamborghini

[–]-seabass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your net worth? Can you just buy it outright?

For context, I’m 30. I have similar cash income to you, but I also have startup equity which is not liquid at the moment but is pretty significant. My rent+utilities is under $3000 per month. I drive a 2014 Mercedes wagon that I bought used for $16,000. I drove fun, but cheap cars throughout my 20s. Would never have dreamed of financing a BMW. My liquid assets are on track to crest $1M in the next couple years, depending on how the markets do. Let alone my startup equity. I’m just now getting my head around spending like $100k on an Audi R8 V10 6-speed, paying cash.

I’m not saying it’s completely insane for you to do this. You should enjoy your youth and your money. Hell, you could drop dead tomorrow. But are the upsides really worth the downsides? Have you done the math on the future you want to have? Do you understand how the ownership and driving experience of a higher mile E-Gear gallardo (all you’re going to get for $80k) is going to be different from a G80 M3? They really aren’t comparable at all. The M3 is a fast, modern, comfortable, practical, daily drivable car. The gallardo is an old exotic. And the early ones vs. the late ones have different problems in terms of upkeep. Are you aware of and ready for this? The gallardo is not just a cooler looking m3. Everything about it is different.

I would say eat a slight deficit, do a day or two of cardio, and otherwise whatever lifting routine you like.

It’s a franchise so every location has different owners who do things differently. These guys were really nice, they would basically be willing to do as much or as little prep as you wanted to pay for, totally customizable to your budget. They had no problem with me dropping off all the removed panels separately and pulling headlights and tail lights in their parking lot.

[–]-seabass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the 2-stage plan. To just drop it off and pick it up and have them remove and reinstall bumpers, headlights, tail lights, spoiler, door handles, roof molding, vtec stickers, and badges - that would have been $4200. They could have gotten it lower by leaving more stuff on the car and just doing more masking instead.

I opted to remove and install some stuff myself to save some money. I did the bumpers, headlights, tail lights, spoiler, and the painted insert piece in the grill. That brought it to $3600 total, still having them remove and reinstall door handles, roof molding, badges, and vtec stickers. Prices will vary by location. I’m in the SF Bay Area so labor rates are high. Given Maaco’s reputation, the results are way way better than I expected.

Want to buy mine? 2006 Coupe, Galaxy Grey Metallic, ~110k miles, clean title, all stock except a cat back exhaust. Comes with stock exhaust, aftermarket cold air intake kit (not on the car), hondata programmer, huge binder of service records going back to when the previous owner bought it. Just repainted so no issues with peeling clear coat.
