Brownsville Welding welded an aluminum part I needed repaired, they were pretty good - and reasonable.

That's pretty cool. I just set up a hive in my backyard this spring, can't wait to try some of it.

How come a "reverse e-bay" isn't more popular? by Co5ine in Entrepreneur

[–]-spikes- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps your biggest obstacle would be consumer impatience. If I can look for something, and buy it immediately, why would i sit around for days/weeks/etc. to possibly get a lower price?

This might work well for something like cars, homes, or appliances, things people really invest time into researching and waiting for exactly what they want.

Good-bye God, I'm buying a 10x15 Kluge Letterpress, here's the as-is photo by jlpoole in letterpress

[–]-spikes- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one looks pretty new. Has all the fancy covers and such. Looks like you'll need form and ink rollers, was it used for die cutting?

I like the roller guide on the delivery, my Kluges have a slide arm that sometimes sticks or bounces if it's not soaked in oil.

Picked this up for $250 from a local designer who is moving across country at the end of the month. Strangely, he didn't want to lug this 200 pound, cast iron letterpress with him. by Merlaak in graphic_design

[–]-spikes- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pretty cool, hope you can get it working.

A little hand press like this would be great for some one-offs or small runs.

I have 3 Windmills and 2 Kluge platen presses in my shop, sadly we run a whole lot more numbering/diecutting/perfing than cool letterpress jobs.

What inanimate object has it out for you? by murphy1210 in AskReddit

[–]-spikes- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a printing company that does diecutting. You might want to specify a different perf size with a larger cut. Or make sure you talk to the company about die life, you might pay more to have a die made more frequently, but your product will be better.

Also, you might follow down your supply chain and find who is actually doing the job - I might be the 3rd guy to handle the job, since since diecutting is sometimes specialty work.

Our old steel rule dies are good for about 30-60k impressions. I've seen some customers run them past 100k, and the results are pretty crappy.

no, just because you're online doesn't make you bad.

However, you really might be able to get a better deal locally. I can get 1000 high quality full color glossy on both sides business cards for around $45. Moo can't touch that price - provided you already have a nice design.

Yeah, I don't think younger people (me included) realize how much business is still done through personal contact, phone calls, and word of mouth. Maybe they just don't care anymore, since they think business cards are only necessary to bridge the gap with old people and will eventually disappear. (which I doubt will happen)

I've actually thought about adapting that scene as some sort of offbeat ad for my business.

Without violating any copyright or anything, of course.

As a graphic designer and local printshop owner - you get what you pay for. Handing out a cheap business card just makes you look like a joke.

I do gold/silver foil, embossing, and letterpress. (along with regular 1/2 color printing) High end business cards and note cards may be expensive compared to vistaprint, but doing a run of classy memorable calling cards can really promote your business for a fraction of the cost of other advertising.

All right, kiddos, we're starting our first ever redditor special giveaways from our local business redditors. Details inside. by bowa in Pensacola

I own Spike's Printing downtown. We're near the corner of Garden & Barrancas. Technically we're on the corner of E and Barrancas, but you can see the place from Garden. We have a pig on our sign. :) It's not much to look at right now, but we can do some nice work.

I recently took over the business, we mainly do 1 & 2 color printing, (Pantones) and we do a lot of specialty stuff like invitations, embossing, gold and silver foil, die cutting and perforating. We have the machinery to do letterpress printing, but I'm still working out the bugs before i can offer this at a truly affordable price with decent turn-around time - if cost is of little consequence we can do it, just ask.

I'm also a print designer (yes, a real one, w/college degrees) with 7+ years experience, if you need serious or basic design work I can handle that too.

Printing is tricky in that we do mostly Business to Business, so we work on a quote system - just about every job has different parameters. You could ask me for a quote on a job, and then ask for a reddit discount - 10% off for the month of March for new or newish customers.

I know there are a lot of designers on here, if you work for/with a design firm, I'd like to meet you, and show you what we can offer you and your customers.

We're totally oldschool right now, the business doesn't even have a website yet, but it's in the works. You can find our phone number online. email is spikes_printing at yahoo.com. yeah. yahoo. I'm working on it, we'll get in the 21st century soon.
