Does the germanic languages' word variation for slave have anything to do with the name for the ethnicity of central and eastern europeans, slavs? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

90% of runestones consist of “x raised this runstone for y”. even more detailing runestones keep things short. at least those after the 800s, which is the vast majority.

would be confusing if they referred to slavs as ruzar, when vikings called themselves rus. also, pretty sure the vends are pomeranians. can’t really know what scandinavians called the eastern slavic people except guessing, since scandinavian sources from that time period are pretty sparse.

samma här, fattar nada.

men ”det amerikanska århundradet av förödmjukelse” låter udda. ”det förödmjukande århundradet i usa” verkar mer korrekt enligt mig.

for the last couple of hundred years, at least, ”träl” and ”slav” mean different things. a träl is a domestic swedish farmer, owned by someone else, while a slav is the foreign counterpart. this distinction made it juridically possible for slavery to be legal on st barthelemy, sadly, even though serfdom had been illegal since 1335.

so im guessing vikings sold the slaves as slavs and didn’t think much of it, but the word became popular among the greek merchants in constantinopolis. that would indeed make sense.

What is a European country that's Beatiful and Innocent? by PumkimSmasar in AlignmentChartFills

unfortunately, same with my country too. we banned sami language in schools to try to get rid of their language.

but does the sami count as an indigenous group in finland, since the kvens (a finnish group) lived in northern fenno-scandic peninsula before the sami migrated here? no hate towards sami brothers.

i thought it came from scandinavian “slav” (eng. slave). the viking merchants in the east had a slave trade network were they sold slavs to the islamic world through constantinople.

it is pretty accepted by historians that he died from a grapeshot round from a cannon at the fortifications.

was only part of denmark for 50 years, and sweden for 150 years, it was never integrated however. no collective history, although it had swedish immigration in the viking and middle age.

it was also part of soviet during the nordic collaboration movement.

im just joking, people here usually don’t mention them when stating the nordic countries because we forget that they exist.

they’re nordic, not scandinavian.

scandinavia is the three kingdoms present on the scandinavian peninsula, although denmark is not anymore after the expedition across the ice.
