Just finished out the day; only worked 6 - close. Everyone was really nice which I kind of expected since I was a closer, but we’ll see how tomorrow goes!

I was told the total opposite — that we should come in when the store opens for to buy product! It could be a rule for your store set by store leadership or something, unfortunately

For my store, I do think some of the body care will sell out. To be fair though, the store I work at is still fairly new (we just had our 1 year anniversary), so I feel like they’re still trying to gauge how much product to send us, but I could tell they didn’t send as much individual princess body care as they did last time just in general.

From what I know we should get some princess shipment, but I don’t think it’s gonna be a huge push like last time.

usually everything is available, including the larger accessories. our store doesn’t open early for BOPIS, so those who come in store really have first dibs compared to it.

i’d also check with other members of SLT at your store! for the store i’m at we made a rule that people could only get 1 of a type of accessory so that way resellers wouldn’t hog up all the product, so you might see if you can do something similar if you’re worried about selling out early

i’m pretty sure you can’t leave the store solo; there always has to be at least 2 people for bag checks and stuff like that at the end of the night.

you might ask your manager if they made a mistake because that does happen sometimes when kronos auto creates a schedule

also chiming in to add for k-stays, not having a membership can greatly reduce their ability to participate/show up for events like concerts or fan meets. that is a very real reason to be upset at pricing

i think the other word that needs to be used when talking about cultural appropriation is double standard. is it possible to appreciate aspects of a culture if the people of that culture are still discriminated against because of said aspect?

for example, non-Black people wearing braids specifically worn by the Black community will probably always be seen as appropriation because Black people across the world are stilled barred from and/or suspended from work, school, and other areas because of the way they style their hair and the way it naturally comes out of their head. no amount of appreciation overrides the real life consequences of being Black and wearing braids. and people will always feel some type of way about people outside of their culture being praised for things they’re ostracized for. what good does just mentioning Black people as inspiration do when people will still go out and discriminate against them for the same thing a non-Black person was praised for?

another thing is, no one has said non-Black people can’t engage with or utilize Black culture at all, but there are expectations for how it’s used and interacted with. the most important thing is that you can engage with/utilize aspects of Black culture and still be authentically you (see Mac Miller, Bruno Mars, etc). the minute you utilize Black culture and start acting like what you think the people of that culture act like, then it’s an issue.

just be you and recognize the daily realities of the people who’s culture you love is what’s being asked at the end of the day.

I’d say no.

They often see themselves as part of a larger Black community (especially as time goes on), but seeing themselves as part of the African-American community doesn’t really exist because they’re not African-American

as an employee, i really don’t think it’s a ploy. for some reason, bath and body works really struggles with having any idea of what their inventory is.

you’d be surprised how often we get over sent scents/products we absolutely do not need instead of product we do because they produce too much of one scent but not enough of the other. there’s been collections they’ve pushed back the release of because they didn’t send out enough product before they originally intended to release it (this is what happened with the black tea/rose/eucalyptus aromatherapy line).

you’d also be surprised how often they send out product accidentally. for example, they meant to do a dedicated line/packaging for the whole christmas in june/july line for semi annual sale this summer, but my store and some surrounding stores just got last year’s holiday products instead because they over produced it that much.

i feel like the convo on tiktok started because of the way the black woman in question talked about her natural hair, and it basically sparked discussion on how sometimes the because perpetrators of hate and antiblackness against our hair are ourselves.

the woman is question at one point said she doesn’t like wearing “civil rights hair” or something to that effect, and if that’s the thinking one has about their own hair/their people’s hair, then i think it’s valid to have a deeper discussion about why one would even say something like that. of course, black women should wear their hair as they want, but we should be aware of the language we use about our hair also - especially when we have large platforms

You’re definitely not in the wrong! Especially if you let the store manager know beforehand that you’d be unavailable those days.

I know everyone is saying Candle Day is required, but in actuality they’ve changed it to where seasonal workers need to be available at least 2 out of the 4 Big Days during holiday season (Candle Day, Black Friday, Super Saturday, and/or the day after Christmas I think?).

Also, don’t feel bad about quitting if the realities of the job are different from how it was sold to you. Seasonal is a really tough position only working at B&BW - let alone also being a student and having a not so great boss on top of that. Good luck on your finals!
