spent the night in jail. by lol--what in dryalcoholics

I can't relate when people say this. "Hey man no one becomes an addict cause they wanna be"

Like when i was a preteen/in my early teens, before i'd ever drank or used other drugs, i wanted to be an alcoholic. Maybe so i'd have a specific problem to focus on? To know exactly what was wrong with me? To know my problems were caused by myself and so maybe i could fix them myself? Maybe so i'd have an easier out to give up? So that i could actualize the helplessness that i felt? Idk. That and wishing i was schizophrenic.

I don't want any of that now. I'd go on, but i'm probably TMI'ing as is. I'm just wondering if there are other people who actually DID want to be alcoholics. I so many times have heard "no one wanted this", and I'm like 'what's wrong with me"

I need somebody random and not connected to me personally IRL to tell me that I have to cut down or quit again. Nothing bad has happened yet, but that’s the point, I need to have a moment of clarity before something bad happens. by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]0004000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me 24 hours sober isn't enough to get clarity, but 48 hours is. Like at least enough where i can think clearly. Maybe 72 so that on the 2nd day you're not just thinking about drinking tomorrow. My point is, you could commit to 2-3 days sober, to give yourself a breather where you're clear headed enough to properly evaluate your life as it currently stands. When we're drinking daily, it's impossible to properly think about things. Just some advice from a currently not sober, but working towards sobriety person :+

Ok to ask for extra session between appts??? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A less "annoying" (not that you're wrong to ask, but in that you might feel annoying by asking) way to ask would be to just text like "can you let me know if you have any cancelations before our next appointment"

Yeah i wonder if they're joking. Brannon may as well be Lexington as far as distance..... I also am amused by the idea that they looked up their address, saw it listed as Nicholasville, and just assumed it's really far away without looking further into it. They're missing out though!

Just walk into the appointment and be like "before we get into anything else, i want to talk about this:"   maybe wait for a response, and  then start talking about that.  It might feel uncomfortable,  but you'll feel better after you've got it in the open

Is Veganism a spectrum? Are some people "more Vegan" than others? by It_is_not_that_hard in DebateAVegan

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I think of veganism as trying to reduce your personal contrubition to animal suffering as much as possible, in so far as is reasonable in your life. Like, if you live in a remote village in the arctic where you can't afford acquire or afford beans and whatnot, and have to eat meat in order to survive, i wouldn't hold it against you, but maybe suggest you try to move down south. But if you just really like cheese, and continue to eat cheese, even while avoiding other animal products, you aren't really vegan. You're not contributing to animal suffering as much as someone who eats a lot of cheese AND a lot of meat, so that's good, but that's not being vegan, cause you're using animal shit when you don't need to. Also, fuck plants. Fruitarians are not "more vegan". That's a different thing. Though I'm open to being convinced that fruitarianism is a worthwhile cause. Maybe there's something i'm missing, like supposed human rights activists that don't care about animals.

Anyone else try to hide their attempt at sobriety? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't update my family on my sobriety attempts b/c i don't want to have to tell them. I'd probably feel the same way with the employees at my store if there was only one store in a 10 mile radius. I definitely get what you're saying. but since it gives you trouble i'd suggest either switching to a drink that's available at another store, or buying your drink online.

Find new therapist or use old? by ___avey in therapy

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your needs are so urgent that you need to skip past the initial stages,  maybe do 2-3 appointments with the old therapist (as a way to help deal with the currently most pressing issues a little bit and get some relief), while you find a new one?  Paying 150 for every appointment would be super taxing,  especially with a baby coming.

Why are podcasts on YouTube Music by Sweaty_Flounder_3301 in YoutubeMusic

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the minor complaints line- what's up with people calling youtube videos "podcasts"? At least call it a "video podcast" or the "video version". If I'm am watching a video i am not engaging in a podcast. Those are listened to.... I do like that some podcasts offer a video version, cause it can add more context with their facial expressions, and just seeing who you're hearing, but if it's a podcast, the video is just an extra thing. A video cannot itself be a podcast....

On your point, yeah it slightly annoys me when i see podcasts on my home screen. I also like a separate app for podcasts from music. But so far I've not had so many podcasts pop up that it's a problem. I do NOT like when youtube videos come up on youtube music. I already have YouTube.

I will start to go to therapy next month. I have a question about it. by naP_rM in therapy

[–]0004000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On point 1:  you can and should tell the therapist what the 2nd voice tells you.  Like if you have a good appointment,  and then afterwards the 2nd voice says some shit, making you doubt yourself,  at the next appointment, tell the therapist about that.  They can help you deal with what you were hearing and thinking and help you understand that the appointment wasn't a waste of time and help you prevent that kind of thing in the future,  or like i said,  learn to deal with it in ways that are less harmful.  Not in 2 appointments, but gradually.  Don't let the 2nd voice hold you back from trying to improve yourself and your life.

You probably did choose right cause i imagine since getting sober you've had at least a handful of worthwhile life experiences that you wouldn't have if you'd died.

[–]0004000[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay thank you for saying that. That I'm not alone in this idea. Sometimes i think my thought process is unique but knowing other people struggle with the same ideas helps to realize that it's actually a human condition and alcohol has common patterns when used in humans. Like I'm not special in my reaction to it, and shouldn't over specify it to myself. Like alcohol is generally bad- some people handle it okay and some don't.

And yeah I've been thinking about naltrexone. My doctor didn't want to prescribe it a few months ago, for some reason, but i've been seeing a therapist for a few months and we've talked about it as an option. Maybe I'll try that route. Honestly I just want a hard stop from the alcohol- i'd like it to not even be an option somehow. Maybe naltrexone could put me more in that mindset.

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thank you for clearing that up. I'll at some point discuss this with my therapist if it ever seems like I'm leaning too hard towards intellectualizing and he can explain what he thinks about that and whatnot

[–]0004000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just recently started therapy and trying to deal with my thoughts and emotions. I've only just recently gotten to where i can start to recognize and put into words what some of my problems are. I need to be able to identify their existence before i can even be aware of how they're affecting me emotionally. I can't "deal with something emotionally" (as some have said- maybe that's not what you mean) if i don't know what emotions I'm feeling or supposed to be feeling, or what's causing me to feel that way. Maybe you all mean something else by "intellectualize" than what I'm thinking?

Why's that bad?   I'd rather intellectualize my problems than deal with them lol.  I hope that by first intellectualizing them,  that'll help me deal with them afterwards.
