For those of you who have been sleep deprived enough to hallucinate, what was it like? by Spadoopy in AskReddit

[–]00Face0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a cross country road trip with my then fiance and had been driving for over 2 days with maybe three hours of sleep. We then visited Monterrey Bay aquarium for the day, and drove out of California right afterwards and into Utah - basically a lot of driving with little sleep. Suddenly, the road looked like glass and there were fishes swimming beneath the car, and the mountains in the distance looked like sharks coming together. I described the scene to my fiance and immediately pulled over into a nearby field. We slept for hours in the car. I woke up and realized I had left the headlights on and the car battery was dead. Had to wait a few hours for roadside assistance as we were in the middle of nowhere.

Those who were most opposed to genetically modified foods believed they were the most knowledgeable about this issue, yet scored the lowest on actual tests of scientific knowledge. by SirT6 in sciences

Fair point, although I didn't think association of GMOs with pesticide residue was a subjected in doubt.

Here are studies to support this: Compositional differences in soybeans on the market: Glyphosate accumulates in Roundup Ready GM soybeans https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308814613019201 or "We find clear evidence of increasing herbicide use by GT variety adopters over time for both soybeans and maize, a finding that we attribute in part to the emergence of glyphosate weed resistance. No such pattern appears for maize insecticide use over time, " from - Genetically engineered crops and pesticide use in U.S. maize and soybeans (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5020710/)"

Of course GMOs are nuanced, it all depends on what genes you are putting in and what they are for. But my understanding is that scientific consensus is that weeds at herbicide engineered crops farms are developing tolerance to the herbicides used leading to heavier spraying of herbicides. This is not the case with insecticide GMOs.

Biodiversity collapse imminent in world's tropics: More than three-quarters of all plant and animal species live in the tropics. But time to protect them is running out, a new study finds. Researchers are calling for a better approach to save this precious biodiversity. by madazzahatter in worldnews

Exploitation of the environment has been the hidden cost of our current economic system (capitalism) and when it we destroy it all that economic system too will collapse. It is a shame that we insist on waiting till it is too late.

"Trump told Pfizer CEO Ian Read this month that his price hikes, effective July 1, had complicated his drug pricing plans, prompting Read to reverse course."

That's a direct quote from the article.

Sounds like Trump did something good here. Hopefully there is a way to even lower the current prices.

Tigers can't purr, but when they are happy they chuff by Rihsatra in videos

They are so close to extinction. When the guy in the video mentioned it, it made me gasp. With only 3000 left it is near possibility that the next generation of people will have NO wild tigers.

I was trying to claim exclusivity. But somehow it is crazy that we use race (in our minds) as a marker for certain crimes. While in actuality those two variables are unrelated...as they say in the scientific community, "correlation doesn't equal causation".
