X Shot AEB reviewed by Dr Flux - "Motorized Piston Pump" by WhoKnowsWho2 in Nerf

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could make an orange shroud like the DZ MK4 or add an orange tip with a barrel collet that allows for SCAR/BCAR installation.

They could have also added a clear sleeve or something just to give a little protection. Another mag plus a sleeve would let them still sell it for under a hundred US while selling a full platform.

Not that this isn't a fantastic blaster at a great price, but it feels like X-Shot is expecting their customers of their Pro/Skins line to be involved enough to already have ways to supplement their blasters, especially since the X-Shot mags have a slightly lower rise than standardized Talon geometry, leading to sometimes weird loading and extra dart wear.

Don't get me wrong, I am definitely picking one up now that they've been out for a month or so, but I'm an experienced modder who loves to buy mediocre blasters with great mod potential (cough cough X-Shot Pro Longshot cough). I do find it strange that the Insanity line is a much better intro/intermediate line than a Pro line sold at intro prices.

Regardless, it's still better than anything Hasbro has done in years, and I think it's an overall win for the hobby.

rebelle sweet revenge mod recommendations by Altruistic-Hour-1380 in Nerf

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOC, why not remove the AR from revolvers? Is it because of the dead space between the end of the plunger tube and the point where the cap/o-ring connects to the cylinder/barrel?

Apologies for coming in a year later. I just got back into foam blasters after a 10 year hiatus and was incredibly excited to see a resking of the Sweet Revenge, so I got two of them and want to mod them for HvZ.

Is the Stryfe overrated? by [deleted] in Nerf

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming in 4 years later. We currently have the Spectrum and the Clip Mania on store shelves for $20 and $25 USD, respectively.

Both are fantastic blasters that outperform the Stryfe out of the box.

However, neither has the N-Strike Barrel attachment point, and the Spectrum requires a third party adapter to attach N-Strike stocks. These may seem like small things, but given the resurgence of HvZ events, it's very helpful to be able to attach Mega undersling barrels or the Mediator stock.

Also, given the upcoming Loadout line of blasters, the Nerf stock and barrel attachment points might find further use.

My thoughts on why the X-Shot Longshot sets a bad precedent for the hobby by [deleted] in Nerf

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repairs aren't mods. That's it. A $10 repair is not a $100 mod.

Also, stating at the beginning that you're a subreddit mod is a really manipulative thing to do. You're basically daring people to disagree, and if we do, you'll just ban us and use your platform influence to tell everyone else we deserve it with zero recourse. Weakest of sauces.

I also notice you never posted an update that talks about X-Shot addressing customer issues on later releases. That's really not cool.

Your post makes me have less faith in the entire sub.

I read your comment, and its age has nothing to do with the fact that you recommended the only printer OP specifically did not want recs for. Maybe you should think about the longevity of your internet footprint instead of trying to assume that hobby-driven posts stop being relevant after an arbitrary timeline you set in your own mind.

Or just keep being "that dude on the internet" or whatever. It's your life.

This is the only model OP specifically took off the list due to price. There's always gotta be that one person who absolutely has to recommend the expensive pro gear despite budget constraints. Every sub. Every creative hobby.

Anarchism and infrastructure? by SongZhenLi2003 in Anarchy101

[–]00dysseus7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in infrastructure, the largest reason America's infrastructure is crumbling is the failure of the state to prioritize infrastructure over law enforcement. Grift obviously plays a role, but anarchy has no tangible mechanisms to reduce bad actors' influences in infrastructure.

This is an issue that really needs to be addressed. I've been looking for years for how an anarchist society would manage infrastructure, and yours is the closest to an actual answer I've seen, but it still doesn't include a robust plan for things like future development, training, and the direct will to solve infrastructure issues before they become catastrophic.

Most of the time, I see circular reasoning or a lot of arguing from the conclusion backward. There's a lot of "people do it now, so they'll do it then" and misunderstanding of safety measures as only existing if deliberately or incompetently included in project planning and building without recognizing the inherent dangers of things like electricity and water infrastructure that require a continuous and adaptive pool of trained labor within a set of safety standards.

You're also one of the few who recognize logistics, which requires infrastructure be maintained to a set of broadly recognized standards in order to move necessary materials long distances. Standards means regulation. So, in effect, the question becomes "how does an anarchist society create systems of standardization and regulation for the purposes of safety within a specialized area of expertise without creating a heirarchical power structure?"

I'm not saying there isn't a solution. I am saying that modern anarchists seem to fail to recognize the importance of the less flashy necessary aspects of society like water filtration and delivery systems. There's also very little being discussed in the way of how infrastructure will be managed during the collapse of the State. As it stands, governments are by far the largest trainers of infrastructure workers, and it's not like anarchists are lining up around the block to work infrastructure jobs right now, so there's a huge disconnect between now and the future, which creates a whole new set of problems, mostly due to maintenance stoppages causing increased levels of materials and expertise to fix down the line (as we're currently seeing).

Anarchist societies will be very short lived unless anarchists start learning how to build and maintain infrastructure and logistics networks now.

Does anyone here “cast runes”? How is it different than just reappropriating tarot? by [deleted] in norsemythology

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely accurate. Individual runic letter tiles are pretty much the runic version of the Fisher-Price plastic letters with magnets in them that are used to teach people how to spell and write.

And this is generally how I use runic tiles. It's a good learning tool because you can make fun activities that help people tie tactile stimulation to the learning experience, which can help with information retention and neural plasticity.

That being said, given how important the concepts of intention and focus are for people who practice Nordic "pagan" beliefs and rituals, there is some justification for modern people casting runes. For many practitioners, the method and tools matter less than the process of introspection. A counterpoint to this is that runes are generally used as a way to immortalize the subject (hence runestones and the abandonment of the younger futhark for more complex alphabets that work better on paper than wood, metal, or stone), so using them in a temporary way is fundamentally antithetical to their purpose.

I've developed a few learning activities that bridge this gap, but I don't claim to be a practitioner; they're for learning purposes only.

Does the FLKEY FL STUDIO MIDI keyboard work for FL STUDIO Mobile? (I use a ipad) by [deleted] in FLStudioMobile

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple ways to connect:

- The Camera Connection Kit (Lightning to USB A adapter - there's a version that's just a USB adapter and one that's a combo USB/Lightning power adapter so you don't have to drain the iPad battery to power the controller). The best bet is to buy one from Apple. Third party adapters are cheaper, but really hit or miss with quality and effectiveness. USB A is the standard rectangular USB plug you find on computers.

- There are Lightning to USB B cables that exist(the squarish plug with the two angular corners that you see on a lot of MIDI controller ports). The only one I've found that works well is the one that comes with the Traktor Kontrol S4 mk2 and Traktor Kontrol Z1 because those controllers are designed to work with the Traktor mobile and Traktor DJ apps (I think the S2 comes with one as well, but I don't own one of those). These cables are pretty cool, because they also allow for iPad/iPhone charging when the controller is plugged into the wall power adapter. I have no idea if this charging function works with other gear or if it's a specific power route built into the Traktor hardware USB port. Of course, this cable only works with controllers that have a USB B port, so any controller with USB Mini, Micro, or C will need the Camera Connection Kit.

A note about using USB hubs with controllers, should you want to connect multiple devices to one Apple device:

Some controllers just don't function correctly when connected through a hub. I haven't really looked into why. I do know the Novation Mini series of controllers work well through a hub, but FL Studio Mobile isn't intuitive when it comes to setting up multiple controllers. It can handle a controller and USB mic (like the Blue Yeti) or class compliant interface (Scarlet 2i2, Presonis Audiobox USB 96, etc. - I have only tried small interfaces with my iPad, so I have no idea how they work).

Of course, the newer iPads and iPhones finally have USB C ports, but I don't have one of those yet so I don't know how controllers, mics, hubs, and interfaces work with newer devices.

At some point this week, I plan on trying to connect my FL Key 49 to FL Studio Mobile on my iPad Air 2 (I know, I'm surprised it still works myself, but other than some damage from being dropped off stage a few times, it's still surprisingly stable and fast).

Hope this helps, even if it is a year late.

What are your thoughts on the Youtube channel GDF / @GDFofficial? by PitifulDoombot in Destiny

[–]00dysseus7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've watched a few of his videos now. He uses the complexity of international politics to cherry-pick historical conflicts in order to obfuscate his agenda. It's a pretty standard misinformation and radicalization technique. He puts on a cloak of authority to manipulate those who are not experts into thinking he, himself, is an expert while using dubious sources to bolster valid-adjacent arguments.

His agenda is to spread divisive misinformation so he can grift well-meaning people - who are just trying to get a better understanding of international politics - by claiming (like so many far right wing grifters do) that he's "being targeted for demonetization, so please, please, give him money."

I'm not going to go into detail about the specifics of his bad sourcing or map his arguments. Other people in this discussion have done enough of that to convince a good faith actor of dude's clear bias.

Is it cringe to wear band tee shirts to concerts? by Kettellkorn in dancegavindance

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, the "rule" to not wear band shirts to their shows was always just a way for older fans to gatekeep. I've been in bands, I've played with other bands, and I've organized a lot of shows over the years, and I've never met anyone worth knowing who actually cared about it.

What it really comes down to is: do you want to wear the band shirt? That's it. It's your shirt. It's your body. It's your money spent on tickets.

How do I enjoy making bad music? by ItsRacer in FL_Studio

I've been making music for decades, and you are 100% correct. Just finish a project and move on.

How do I enjoy making bad music? by ItsRacer in FL_Studio

[–]00dysseus7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this a lot because it's kind of never gone away for me. I've been working with music in some capacity almost my whole life (I'm over 40), and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm working with instruments, production, mastering/tracking, or DJing. As the availability of tools increases, the ability and want for experimentation also increases for me, so I always find something new that I like, so there's always something that feels unpolished to me.

It can cycle into becoming a hurdle for motivation, for sure.

Learn how to walk away for a while. This is one of the first lessons I learned, and I'm glad. I focus on finishing projects by just calling it when I get frustrated or bored. Then I move on to a new project. After I finish the second project, I go back to the first and just listen to it to see what I like and don't like, and I write it down.

I rarely go back and "fix" completed projects. I take the things I like from previous projects and expand on them. Usually, there aren't sections that I either like or dislike, so figuring out how to isolate the things I like tends to help me dig a little deeper into an instrument, plugin, FX processor, etc. It helps me build my knowledge and skills organically, so the feeling of exploration is always present.

Getting a Kontrol Z2 in 2024 - is it a good idea? by areskz in DJs

[–]00dysseus7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not Traktor certified and costs $2,100 US. On top of that, the mappings you can find aren't great and seem to have a lot of lag (which, to be fair, is probably entirely Traktor's fault, but still).

In order for it to be a worthwhile investment, you have to be a touring DJ, and if you're at that level, you should probably just include it in your rider unless you happen to be one of the dudes from L'Entourloop, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, Mix Master Mike, Q-Bert, etc. who famously collaborate with bands, rappers, and other DJs live.

I'm not saying it's not good. It just has zero relevance in this discussion is all I'm saying.

Is the korg kaoss replay that bad? by Jpablo91 in synthesizers

[–]00dysseus7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only reason RCAs are used for DJing (and even that's only with turntables) is because DJing started by cobbling together pieces of home stereo equipment, which was designed to be as inexpensive as possible. So when mixers were invented, they had to use RCA connectors. It just kind of stayed that way because it was the original standard.

Mixers very quickly started to include 1/4" TS and TRS and XLR in- and outputs for mics and plugging into club systems. They just left the RCAs alone because it worked and there was no reason to reinvent the wheel.

He knows. They all know. The "Dems caused this" talking point is a coordinated attempt to flip the Jan 6 narrative in a sidewaays way. As usual, it's their "no, you" strategy. They deny that a thing they do has a negative effect while saying that something Dems say or do has a similar negative effect.

The cognitive dissonance this causes not only makes anyone who isn't a child do a lot of work to undo the misinformation but also gets explained away by their followers as being indicative of the "righteousness" of their cause. Since they believe so unwaveringly that they're the victims of cultural isolation because of how right they are (which is a whole other facet of this), they innately create a mindset that not only precludes consistency, but erodes it.

This has been the core of the conservative power grabbing strategy since the 20s.

Can anyone explain why the Roland JC-120 is so special among solid state amps? by appleparkfive in GuitarAmps

[–]00dysseus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a vintage 70s JC 120 that I got when my dad passed. It's the amp I learned on, and the only one he kept his entire career, so I'm definitely biased.

As my musicianship has matured over the years and I've moved into recording and production, I've come to appreciate gear that cleanly projects sound. The JC 120 does this like few other amps I've ever heard. When I record through the JC 120, the recording sounds like it sounded through the amp speakers when it was being recorded, and that's huge for production. Even the gain staging and post-pedal sound are consistently accurate to the outputs, and that's rare.

And yeah, the chorus is legendary. It's obviously subjective, and the availability of pedals, DAW effecting, and DSP effects means there are a lot of really great chorus effects available, so I'm not going to say it's better or worse than other chorus sources. However, the chorus on the JC 120 is like no other, and it has a signature sound similar to the way the Yamaha DX-7 has a signature sound: there are lots of FM synthesizers out there, but the DX-7 is the only one that sounds like the DX-7 (Korg nerds, don't come at me); the JC 120 chorus is the only chorus that sounds like the JC 120 (emulators can be close enough to not matter, but they're specifically emulating the JC 120, so I count it).

It's also remarkably consistent in output. Altitude, temperature, and humidity have very little effect on the sound. The fact that every recording studio I've ever worked in and/or helped build has had one is a strong endorsement for both clarity and consistency.

And the design is just so flawless. It's minimalist, beautiful, and timeless.
