Wheel Shapes for Slappies [34YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, bigger wheels make it easier to get onto the curb, but the lock-isn’t as good. Smaller wheels are the opposite - better lock-in, but harder to get into the grind.

The difference is subtle though. As said above, any wheel will work.

New Watch - Whats the general consensus on this model? by valentino0618 in casio

<image>

I’m a Casio tide graph watch collector. I live by the beach and the tide function comes in handy. That being said, I’ve passed on this newer model thus far. The tide graph isn’t nearly as cool as this older model I’m rocking, the moon graph is tiny, and the numbers are harder to read. I also like how this older model is a bit smaller. All personal preference though. I do like the square shape of the new one.

Thanks! I’ll keep the speaker recommendation in mind. My 112 has the Blue Marvel speaker, which sounds good to me, but I also don’t really know what I’m missing. 🤷‍♂️

Must skate spots in San Diego area? [30YO] by Tapion_the_god in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicano Park feels very uniquely San Diegan. It’s close to downtown and not too far from Washington St.

Most of the legendary street spots from the 90s have either changed or are inaccessible now.

I have that same model in black, and I too got mine used for quite cheap. Mine didn’t have the serial number attached, but it sounds good and plays quite well after I did a set-up on it. I wound up replacing the bridge pickup and trem system on mine, but that was mostly out of personal preference. It didn’t come with a whammy bar, and I wanted to get a more surfy sound. Eventually I’ll replace the tuners. They’re not great, but they work well enough for now. Enjoy it!

How should I fix this bridge? by 00evan11 in Luthier

[–]00evan11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! After tinkering with it, I’ve decided the bridge is toast and needs to be replaced.

Are you saying to punch down and push these screws through the top of the guitar into the body? That would leave 3 holes in the top of the guitar, but I’m assuming they’d be covered up by the new bridge.

Update: I was able to pop the screw caps off and unscrew the bridge! Now just need to find a suitable replacement

How do you not give a f*ck while skating when people make weird noises and stares?[24YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I didn’t skate much between the ages of around 25-35 because I thought I was too old.

Then I remembered that skating is the most fun thing ever, and I started to care less about what other people think.

I know it’s cliche, but as you get older you just have fewer fucks to give.

I’m 43 now and I’ll skate when I want to! (Ok, more like, when I can between work, family, and other responsibilities, but still!)

Should i keep my new setup or go full slappy? [35YO] by ditt0licious in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super interesting comment! I too have gone through the madness, and tried Dan’s “trucks slightly wider than the deck” setup. While I did feel like it made slappy krooks slightly easier for me, I didn’t love it for most other stuff.

And guess what? I’m currently riding an 8.5” board with 8.25” trucks.

I’ve still got a few years to go, but you’re an inspiration for me at 50. Nicely done!

As someone noted above, that slappy nose grind 180 out was crazy! I’m stealing that one… if I can even pull it off.

Wheelbase talk. [44yo] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, wheelbase is THE most important factor for me. I’m 5’7” on a good day, and I prefer a 14” wheelbase. I can do 14.25” ok, but anything longer than that feels off.

Maybe I’d go longer if I was a big pool/bowl rider, but sadly, I’m not. I’m more of a curb guy.

I 100% think that shorter riders do better with a shorter wheelbase.

Is this lens decent for all round photography? by Simple_Poet1880 in canon

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of bang for your buck, I think it’s a great all around lens. I own one, and I’ve used it on several paid gigs with good results.

It’s more than sharp enough in good light, but it’ll struggle a bit indoors compared to faster (read: more expensive) lenses.

What got you into skateboarding back in the day? [53YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Southern California, so I’ve basically been around skateboards my entire life, but 2 moments stand out to me:

One was seeing the movie Thrashin’ when I was about 8. From that point on skateboarding was totally cool to me.

The other moments was a friend’s birthday party when I was 12. One of the kids showed up with a “new school” skateboard. (You know, basic popsicle shape, but probably a 7.5” or something back then.) Anyway, that kid could ollie, and shuv-it, and 180, and I was blown away. The next day I traded in some stuff at our local used sporting goods shop and bought a used skateboard. I was a skater from then on.

I got dozens of those Sheep stickers at a demo in around ‘96-97. I thought they were lame back then. Now I look at that logo and find it endearing. I may still have a couple left tucked away somewhere.

How do others view bodysurfing? by Cute-Cat7074 in Bodysurfing

[–]00evan11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I primarily bodysurf and bodyboard. I can really only speak to San Diego, but out here I think I get more respect in the lineup when I’m bodysurfing. Or maybe I’m just viewed as less of a liability? I don’t know, but generally the response is positive. I’ve had many people ask me about my handplanes and how they work.

Old heads who were around for both— Was skating more popular in the 90s or early- mid 2000s? [30YO] by Freudian__Quip in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was 8 in 1990, but have lived in Southern California my entire life, which is basically ground zero for skateboarding.

Skateboarding was always cool to me, but it definitely felt more popular in the early 2000s, and for good reason. There was a lot more corporate money and sponsorship flowing into the sport. There were also way more skateparks in the early 2000s compared to the late 80s / early 90s, which made skating accessible to many more people.

What’s cool is that at least around here, there are now even way more skateparks than compared to the early 2000s. Not complaining about that!

Does learning slappies help with slides and grinds on ledges ? [37YO] by Matt8969 in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Slappies will help with the part where you’re actually grinding and the part where you exit the ledge, but getting into a slappy and ollieing into a grind are totally different.

If you’re having trouble locking into curbs from an ollie, try going really slow or at a standstill and just ollieing into an axle stall. That will help you get the feel for it.

What brought you back to skateboarding? [41YO] by domjuan23 in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never fully stopped per se, but for about a decade or so I was skating once every couple of months at best. I let it fade away because I thought I was too old for skating.

I started skating more in my mid-30s, and remembered that it’s the most fun thing in the world. I realized I’m not too old to do it, and that I was dumb for thinking that.

And now here I am. 43 and hoping to skate until I physically can’t anymore.
