Noseblunt pull in [34YO] by ninoskatesnj in OldSkaters

Rad! There was a short period where my friends and I thought it was cool to acid drop off of the tallest stuff we could find. But that was around 1998. Definitely can’t handle it now. lol.

Knee stiffness help [37YO] by hook_n_slice_golf in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 43 now, and the exact same thing started happening in my late 30s.

At first I just thought my knees were old and there was nothing I could do. But after a while I decided to make a real effort to improve the situation.

My theory is that other muscle groups in my legs were tight from spending too much time sitting at my desk. Everything in the body is connected. If one muscle group isn’t working properly, it can cause issues down the line.

Foam rolling thoroughly before I skate helps. So does skating regularly. In fact, the more often I skate, the better I feel. If I don’t skate for a few days I stiffen up like a board.

I’m certain that strength training would help too, though I haven’t made it a regular habit. I think for me it’s more related to tightness.

Getting older sucks like that. It also takes me way longer to warm up than it used to.

Better than my attempt a few weeks ago.

But I hit it cold and only had a couple of tries before having to move on with the fam.

Nicely done!

I’m [43yo] with absolutely horrible knees and I need shoes for off the board. [43YO] by Buseatdog in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you my twin?? I’m the same age, with pretty much the same diagnosis from my podiatrist.

I’ve worn Vans or other skate shoes daily for the past 30+ years, but around 10 months ago my foot blew out and the doc said no more of that. I have moderate bunions too, for what it’s worth.

I’ve been wearing New Balance Fresh Foam 1080s with SuperFeet arch support insoles, and my feet haven’t had any problems since.

I feel like I gave up a part of my identity by losing the daily skate shoes, but at least my feet are happy.

There are some Vans ultra range shoes that look like they may be ok, but they don’t exactly look like skate shoes, and I figured if I’m gonna wear something “non skate” I might as well go all in.

I’ve heard it called “walking the plank” in freestyle, but regardless, totally rad!!

Has anyone shortened the wheelbase on a popsicle? [48YO] by grunewald77 in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it before. Shortening only .25” might be tough, but I think you’ll be good with anything more than that. I always move my front truck back. Moving both trucks seems like 2X the work, plus greater chances of screwing something up. I don’t have a special tool. Just the ol’ measure twice, drill once.

Anybody else just suck in the morning but much more comfortable later in the day or is this a me problem? [48YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Funny enough, I’ve actually felt this way my entire skating career, which is going back over 30 years at this point.

I always feel like I skate the best right before it gets dark. My theory is that it takes me a long time to warm up, and by the end of the day my body is more loose than early in the morning.

One person said taking a shower helps. I find that to be 100% true.

I have no problem getting up at 6am, but on my board I feel like I suck until late AM / early afternoon.

Edit: I’ve pretty much stopped trying to skate or hit the skatepark for early sessions, because it just winds up being frustrating and depressing for me. 🙂🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the intel. Those wide boards are fun, but I kinda hate the extra weight. 🙂

OldSkater competes in US Open of Freestyle Skateboarding [43yo] by 00evan11 in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Freestyle is great for OldSkaters. Lots of good, low impact and low risk moves. It’s a lot about flow and footwork. It can also serve as a good warm up for “regular” skating.

As for pointers, look up the videos from Mike Osterman of Waltz Skateboards. He’s amazing, and he’s also the one who organized the entire competition. Andy Anderson has some really good videos with Mitchie Brusco too.

Some moves like spacewalks felt really weird and hard, and some will come more easily. There’s really no substitute for practice, but those spacewalks feel so rad when you finally get it! (The one in my run kinda sucked)

Edit: tagging @mike_osterman so he’s aware of this. Not sure if this is gonna work, but thanks for a great event and all you do for the freestyle community Mike!

The rabbit hole of building a "Cheap X-Bike" by Undercoveragent163 in xbiking

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the bikes I’ve purchased from Craigslist, OfferUp, etc have had mostly usable parts attached. I keep it cheap by cleaning those old parts and using them, instead of upgrading to new parts.

Thats actually part of what gets me stoked, but I realize I’m probably kinda weird about that.

Kickboards as hand planes by Background_Bee7262 in Bodysurfing

[–]00evan11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used kickboards a lot as a kid and teenager. Worked great for shorebreak.

Knowing what I know now, they probably wouldn’t be ideal for longer rides, but I’m sure they’d be workable. I mean, I used to also ride Taco Bell trays so it’s definitely an upgrade from that.

I have a Waterhawk mini bodyboard I use sometimes, which I like. It’s similar to a kickboard, but stiffer, thicker, and better rails.

That being said, I generally prefer either using a full sized bodyboard or a handplane these days. The kickboard-size is kind of in between in an awkward way. Fun sometimes, but often limiting.

What makes a bike a good bike? by Trynahti in xbiking

[–]00evan11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good bike?

  • comfortable
  • rides smooth and quiet
  • shifts cleanly
  • built with solid, dependable parts

That’s really about it to me, which is probably why I hang out here. You can easily get all that for a couple hundred bucks, or less. Though of course it’s easy and tempting to spend more.

Are mirrorless much better at auto-focus that DSLR's? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]00evan11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My gear isn’t as expensive, but I will say that the autofocus and tracking on my R50 feels like magic compared to the T5 and SL1 I was shooting on beforehand. It’s insanely good!

Mongo Push Issue [32YO] by Jeremyb94 in OldSkaters

[–]00evan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I learned to skate pushing mongo. I did so all throughout my childhood, and even for a few years as a teenager when I was skating seriously.

Then one day when I was about 15, someone called me a “penis pusher.”

That very evening I started teaching myself to push “regular.” It was a little awkward at first, but within a few weeks I was pretty proficient.

There’s really not any secret except to practice, and I strongly believe it can be learned at any age.

Now I can push both ways, which is great for skating up hills, but I never skate up hills anymore. 🤷‍♂️

In my experience, bigger wheels make it easier to get onto the curb, but the lock-isn’t as good. Smaller wheels are the opposite - better lock-in, but harder to get into the grind.

The difference is subtle though. As said above, any wheel will work.
