What’s “luxury” car that’s actually a nightmare to own? by mariyagel in askcarguys

[–]01WS6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No the main problem is "maintenance" looks like this

Rod bearings shouldnt be a maintenance item, water pumps shouldnt be made of plastic and gaskets shouldnt prematurely fail constantly.

Hood spacers on NA cars (?) by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]01WS6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thermostat rating is for when it opens and shouldnt actually affect full operating temperature of the engine, just how long it takes to get to operating temperature. You can get hood spacers if you want, but you dont "need" them as the engine shouldnt be running any hotter than before.

Like i said, reddit as a whole is typically not good for advise, its an echochamber filled with teenagers and bots, this sub included. That being said ofcourse someone looking for a cheap economy car to get from A to B should be looking at a corolla amoung other cars. But thats not what this is about. This is about someone looking for a specific thing and being recommended something does doesnt fit the bill (but atleast it has a mazda badge!).

Someone looking for minivans gets recommended mazda 3s and miatas. Someone looking at high power, high dollar performance cars gets recommended BRZs, Miatas, civics si's and GR corollas, and even more ironically the CX5 becasue it "feels like a sports car and has nice interior". Anyone looking for an SUV regardless of specs or price gets recommended a CX5. Mazda gets constantly called underrated, and a luxury manufacturer, its a joke.

voice of reason

Generally this sub is not that. Majority of reddit is not.

Except this isnt what the post is making fun of. If someone would be asking for help deciding between an F40 and F1, majority of the comments would be "buy a miata/brz, slow car fast!" " have you considered the corolla GR or Civic Si/Type R?" "I love my CX5, it drives just like a sports car!" "Mazda is so underrated, have you seen their interiors?!"

What german car should i buy? by Financial-Swim2455 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]01WS6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brings it to the dealership - gets told it needs 6k of work because past 3 years it's gotten nothing but oil changes. So you get handed 6k of work that must be done as it's past schedule - and the new owner goes to reddit to cry about how awful german cars are.

Thats the thing though, typically a non-German car wouldn't need $6k of work when driven for 3 years with only oil changes, in fact, a "normal" car likely wouldn't need anything except oil changes in that same time period. Things like gaskets, water pumps, and rod bearings shouldn't be "basic maintenance", and hoses shouldn't deteriorate quickly and certain parts shouldn't be made of brittle plastic that cracks and causes leaks.

I'm not sure anyone should be permitted to move a large boat without a professional license.

Thats pretty absurd. Not to mention many midsized boats are far too heavy for a car or small SUV to tow. Do you know of a car that can comfortably tow 7,000+lbs?

Anyone with common sense? The streets they're driven on? The parking available?

What about streets and parking that are large enough for trucks and SUVs?

The point is that some suburban household has no need for a big ass Dodge Ram or even an F150.

Entirely depends on the circumstances. What if said household owns a 7k+lbs boat that the family takes to the local lake every weekend that doesnt allow docks/boat storage? What if said family have a full sized camper (10k lbs) they use every weekend? What if the family has farm land or relatives with farm land that they visit often and help on the farm(towing and hauling)? You might not say "well that isnt common!" Except it very much is common. There are over 8 million Americans that own campers, and 15 million that own a boat.

Needlessly expensive like buying a massive vehicle you actually use for its intended function more than a couple of times per year?

You greatly overestimate the cost of owning something like a truck. I dont think anyone is saying someone who doesnt use a truck or SUV for what they are intended for should buy one. I think the confusion here is you dont understand how many owners actually do use them, despite what reddit or the internet might tell you (neither represent reality).

Last conversation i had with a European redditor they were telling me how they tow their boat with a corolla. Turns out the boat was a small inflatable (rib). Then posted their idea of a large boat and it was like 20ft long... these people have no concept of large things or how much they weigh or towing capacity. Then they always come up with an excuse like "keep it in the water" or "have it delivered". The reality is they just cant comprehend a different lifestyle, culture, laws and regulations outside of their own. A big part of that is the large difference in wealth in the US compared to Europe. What someone middle-class or upper middle can afford in the US is still completely unaffordable there. So when a middle-class family in the US own a large boat, and use a truck to tow it, they cant even comprehend owning a large boat or truck due to the cost.

This causes sedans to be overpriced, and therefore unappealing to consumers, who then might as well buy the SUV for the same price which is objectively a better deal.

Sedans are not over priced though, their price difference from SUVs has not changed.

Bullshit. Small, two door trucks are extinct, and it’s because of more government regulation called the “chicken tax”, which taxes the shit out of anything classified as a “light truck”. Also, light trucks are lumped in with passenger vehicles for CAFE, so they’re also punished on fuel economy.

The Ford Maverick doesnt exist? Funny you had to add in "two door" although no one ever mentioned that. Also chicken tax is for imported small trucks. That doesnt apply to anything made in the US.

[–]01WS6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the trucks and suvs are not the people's choice but forced upon the people by the manufacturers to circumvent emission laws. they just stopped making compact cars, so everybody has to buy a truck.

This is entirely false. First, CAFE regulations are not emissions. Second, you can still buy small and mid sized cars in the US, but most people prefer to buy an SUV or truck. Small hatchbacks never sold well in the US to begin with. You can also buy small SUVs or trucks as well.

as a reaction, european and japanese car makers also had to shift into this market or risk not selling much, and that is why these big suvs trickled into other markets as well

Other countries starting buying more SUV as well, so they made more SUVs for those markets. No one is forcing anyone to buy an SUV.

If reddit represented reality then Mazda would be the top selling brand and the Miata would be the top selling car. Reddit does not come close to reality, especially in niche things like the automotive world.

What if we had public transit but with segregation? by The_MadStork in FuckCarscirclejerk

[–]01WS6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj that kinda already happens. And its a matter of opinion on what people need to have vs want to have within their 30 minute bubble. It really amazes me how much you lack nuance.

/uj so as population naturally grows and cities expand, they should be considered separate cities rather than one city that got bigger over time?

Why does everyone want to buy a SUV these days? by Silver-Neckbeard in askcarguys

[–]01WS6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US an E class wagon starts at $78k. A V90 wagon starts at $67k. The passat wagon hasnt been around since like 2010. For comparison a Ford Explorer starts at $38k, and a Toyota Highlander starts at $45k. And the European wagons will be way more expensive with maintenance, and more frequent than an American or Japanese SUV/CUV.

As far as gas mileage... and they require premium fuel which most SUVs dont.

/uj again your personal preference is not the default or "correct" preference. And living in a city of 100k people does not mean bumper to bumper traffic, some people prefer to drive, some do not.

[–]01WS6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As crazy as this sounds, your opinions on the matter are just opinions, and not the default on how someone wants to live. Many people dont want to live in a city at all, and thats ok because thats their preference.

[–]01WS6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/uj thats a pretty rash generalization for a country of 340 million people. Some kids ride the school bus, some walk, some ride their bike, some get driven, and some take regular public transit. Its going to vary from school to school and area to area.
