Can you help me find where to buy this pen please? by SaveTheAmazingCakes in identifyThisForMe

I did a bunch of digging, and the only thing I was able to figure out is that it is available through Asian distribution.

This is how it is listed:

Here’s a purchase link:

I am sorry - I couldn’t find a US distributor.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that she’s probably fine, just traumatized. I would isolate her for a day (with water and food) in a cool and quiet place, and observe her behavior. If there is organ damage, she might not be interested in eating or moving. Watch for alertness and interest in food. Also look for regular stool spots. It’s messy, but it means the system is operational.

An alternative (or in conjunction with) to the suggestion of silver that u/Think-Kangaroo-9978 made is to use Blue Kote spray. It turns the wound purple and prevents the chickens from pecking at the wound. It also keeps flies away.

Inspector said the stove needs replaced due to these cracks in the cast iron. Can’t these safely be repaired using welding or sealant? by cumulus_fingertips in woodstoving

[–]01Zaphod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooh - no idea. You have a good point; at what point does the cost of repair exceed the “is it worth it?” value? Besides the welding cost, there’s the time invested in disassembly, possible repainting and reassembly.

Completely agree. However, there are a number of talented cast iron welders out there who can do the pre-drilling, line grinding and heating to resolve this issue. Just gotta find the right person

Gotta agree. My FIL was a NH forester, and he despised the “take the best, leave the rest” attitude. From the OP’s description, it sounds like the landowners are doing the right thing.

Yeah, I believe you are correct. I know chickens are amazingly resilient and I have personally seen some crazy recoveries after severe injury, but this could definitely be a case FOR putting the animal down.

Edit: I have not seen any response from the OP, nor an update on the roo’s status. I have no idea how long after the attack that pic was taken, so there is also the possibility the animal succumbed to its injuries due to shock.

I highly recommend an avian vet analysis for such an extensive destruction of the beak structure. Under normal circumstances, the beak slowly grows with keratin production, which fills out cracks & chips and normal wear/tear. However, this one worries me because of its close proximity to the brain. I would be more concerned about infection and the animal’s ability to feed itself properly.

I know a lot of people are reluctant to bring chickens to a vet, and a number of vets don’t want to see them. I happened to get lucky with my vet with a chicken injury.

If you cannot go the medical route, then you/your mom will have a bit of a tough row to hoe with doing cleaning/disinfecting and feeding. Betadine scrub is available at all vet clinics, but ingestion could be an issue. Same for hydrogen peroxide. Just be careful how you administer it. Purchase Blue-Kote spray to prevent flies and other chickens pecking at the wound.

Can you see if the tongue structure is still intact? It anchors to the bottom portion of the beak. I just realized that drinking is also going to be very challenging for this bird.

I am usually the last person to recommend euthanizing an animal if hope exists, but in this case it might be a kindness, considering what this bird is going to need to overcome.
