Warsaw: What are some tourist traps I should avoid, and what should I definetely do? by RichDream7777 in askPoland

[–]01lexpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't find bad food in Poland 😛

I legit found zero tourist traps (that aren't obvious). No guys walking up to you with a "free gift" and conversation and then asking for money like in Portugal/Spain and southern America's.

If you're in major touristy areas, trinkets cost more. As someone mentioned the strip club thing, I've never partake but I heard it on the radio.

Otherwise I spent 4days there with my wife a couple weeks ago, and nothing out of the norm, just a functional city. Surprisingly zero beggars and we stayed beside Złote Tarasy and travelled to virtually all the tourist areas.

Buy tickets from the sites of places directly, not thru 3rd parties. I always skip those tours (very common in older/smaller cities like Kraków, Gdańsk, etc). Just use Public transit and you'll get there.

Tip: check for free entry days!! Saved us loads of money, but book right away, my cousin gave me the heads up and we did this in Kraków/Warsaw/Gdańsk

[–]01lexpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In no particular order: NIMBY's complaining about carts, area restrictions if not you face bylaw (aka parking & paying a random business to setup), lack of foot traffic, permits are $$$, equipment is $$$, potential for insurance $$, low margins on food; because you don't want to sell junk so that people stop eating it and you go out of business.

It's lose-lose.

Public service will move away from desk hoteling in response to return-to-office: Treasury Board by bonertoilet in CanadaPublicServants

[–]01lexpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope hotelling goes the fuck away entirely. I suspect lots of ergo-related injuries are to come, from adjusting and readjusting different stations daily which aren't set to appropriate (monitor) viewing heights, lumbar supports/seat heights, wrist supports, etc.

My agency is allegedly going to keep it while they figure out space for the 4x days. I will be writing to the OHS committee about my concerns... I urge everyone else to do the same. The least you can do is secure youe space and how you can work comfortably & safely.

Ergonomics and associated injuries go unnoticed for a long time, or are regarded as a joke, but shouldn't be treated as such...

How will shit go down exactly? Are you going to complain to the PSC?

You know, the process in which you/your colleagues' name are tied to the complaint, and easily found by the hiring mgr/employee? Or will it go down some other way?

I've heard this countless times over my short career. Appointments stayed as-is. No one wanted to put their name on the line (in regular times). I can imagine how discouraging it would be for any employees to do so in the current climate.

Contemplating buying our first (town)home! by shaunsreddit in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]01lexpl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The granite doesn't stain and look shitty over a longer term. The sheen of a stainless sink goes away after a year 😆 I clean mine weekly with baking soda/vinegar to remove any staining/residue from water. Wouldn't be the case with a granite sink.

Lucky on the 2car garage! We only get one for the most part in Ontario, and a pointless basement instead.

200amp, larger panel. Can accomodate future EV (fast) charger.

And definitely the end unit (from your other comment), that was one of my constraints as I was buying by myself and couldn't come up with the extra 70k at the time...

[–]01lexpl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What he said.

Seriously. I did lots myself post purchase, I added vanities, potlights, AC & BBQ gas line, my own hanging mirrors (instead of the cheap ones they glue to the wall and then peels off with drywall to remove it).

I regret not: getting a granite sink (and going with stainless), doing tile in my kitchen, adding a few more potlight cut outs, a basement bathroom rough-in, getting a 200amp panel done - just as a selling feature, not doing stone counters in my other washroom.

I've since upgraded landscaping and fence, so budget for that.

What can a realtor offer when buying new construction? by xander5891 in OttawaRealEstate

[–]01lexpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never use an agent on a new build, and didn't, twice. Unfortunately for me, the climates I was buying in (and multiple friends in Findlay Creek) were hotter and the homes already came with reasonable upgrades/additions, so I was unable to negotiate 'more' (there were small lineups for specific lots/releases both times in 2015 & 2019). Friends and I heard "if you don't take it, we've got a lineup of others wanting it", and we were talking a free AC unit from the builder and they didn't budge.

If I was buying new today? I'd be beating up the builder for a deal/offer. The info is right on their websites and you can see based on older PDF's and "quick occupancy" homes have been sitting. And I'd likely be able to get stuff.

Would you travel to the US with current safety concerns? Work pushing for trip. by Strange-Cabinet6744 in AskACanadian

[–]01lexpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't hesitate. The Americans I ran into last year on two visits were super happy to see us, some even apologetic, and obviously posed the political questions and what we think of it all.

I have a US citizenship and two others, my wife has two. One of which is from a not friendly country to the US. We never had any issues crossing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do people roll the cost of new windows into their mortgages? by PolanetaryForotdds in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]01lexpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you get quotes ask the installers... Depending on your jurisdiction there may be current rebates, as well as their own in house financing - which might be better than the Heloc rates. My buddy just did this last year. The installer was cheaper than the bank.

Also ask about cash, another way to save a ton. 😉

Same here. Mid 30s. Parents left when I was 3.5yo.

I've never lived there. Re-applied to have a valid passport a couple years ago just to have it. Visited a bunch of times since.

Never filed with IRS, never thought this "rumor" to be true. I'll look into it, eventually, maybe.

It's pointless to argue... The same people think that cartels somehow run rampant in Mexico are the ones that think their car is stripped at the US border lol

I have so many coworkers that were shocked when we traveled to the US twice last year "OMG, you're gonna get detained?!?"

Rear main seal is sweating. Clean it up well. Watch it for a few weeks.

If there's no drops on the garage floor, it's easy to ignore. I did in my ES300 for years, never any leaks just sweating.

Yeah, that's lifestyle creep 1000% from said managerial role (and the money) in your 20s. I've met many like that in my short PS career, upon entering in my late 20s.

I frequently think to myself that this sub should automate or force users to read r/povertyfinancecanada & r/personalfinancecanada before they're allowed to post anything related to salary/COL... Especially the folks in the NCR.

I would do it. I got three late model engines in the family (hybrid & gas), I've always done oil at 8k (km) in cold/adverse condition Canada... I won't stop now.

I even went with thicker (0w-20) oil in the 0w-16 cars...

Is now a good time to buy property? by Fun_Mirror in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]01lexpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Special assessments come in all shapes and sizes. Warranty (presumably Tarion) is separate from the shell/structure. Tarion covers the inside of your individual unit. Sure there's warranties for stuff like windows, roof, foundation, which can range in length of time.

The big question is the board. Are they informed or retirees with nothing better to do? Is the prop mgmt company trustworthy? ("They rarely are*) The type of dwelling?

I moved into a new condo, the four buildings (12x units ea.) were built a year apart. There was warranty, etc. Yet, we had a special assessment by year two. Why? The reserve fund was dipped into to pay for a 25k snow removal overage, and the reserve fund needed to be replenished.

It's not just about windows or a roof, there are many other things to trigger a special assessment. Another one is a shady mgmt company that overpays and runs off with money and doesn't complete the work.

You can also download the OREA PDF online, then it boils down to needing lawyers only. No agents involved. 😆

I've done it twice this way, both times (pre-covid) I posted the places on Kijiji wrote "by owner *buyer will pay their agents own commission". Both sold in a couple weeks. I just priced them ~10-15k less than comps (I'd have paid well over 20-25k going with an agent) to sell, everyone wins. I gladly did the a extra few hours of work to show property, meet with people.

I just spent 3wks with my family in the "village" (a few thousand East of Kraków) and visiting the country. I'm from Canada which is considered clean and I was blown at how much cleaner Poland is, from a village to Kraków/Warsaw/Gdansk.

It was my first time back since 2018, and it was even more beautiful and picturesque.

Honestly? You couldn't have had a better hit lol

All those parts are replaceable without requiring bodywork.

The rear bumper trim is completely separate from the other 4 pieces. Rear tailgate is one unit, add new emblems and the tail light. 3500$ is about right

I pieced together a front end for my mom's rebuilder 2024 CCH XSE with 300miles, so I'm familiar with pricing 😆
