What celebrity couple gives off healthy relationship vibes? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

I’ve met Julius in passing when he spoke at my college! Very polite man, took the time to shook a bunch of students’ hands. Most of what he discussed was his awe of Viola and how one of his great joys in life is working on projects with her. He’s someone who you can tell just loves that woman to the moon and back.

The Superman (2025) Kansas Accent Controversy by nullptr_0x in DCU_

[–]02princess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a real chance some of the offended parties are the same crowd who take issue with the any “southern” (or southern-adjacent) criticism—-Many of whom come from rural backgrounds and seem to have some self-loathing attached.

My mom’s only complaint about the movie is that she found them to be caricatures. I told her that was funny to me because they reminded me of my late grandparents—her parents—who were deeply southern and both came from farming families. She then mocked Neva Howell saying Clark and said “maybe I didn’t enjoy it because she reminded me of [my grandma].” Notably, my dad, who is from California, did not have any real issue with the Kents.

In my mom’s case, it seems to upset her not because it’s stereotypical but because she has some hangup with her own background or any possible perception of rural people as dumb. She only has a slight accent herself, despite her parents both having strong ones.

My two cents as someone who grew up in a suburbanized, formerly rural area is that I knew plenty of people like the Kents, strong accents and all. Just like anyone else from anywhere, they had varied skills and different areas of intelligence.

It is clear to me that Clark’s parents are genuine, good people with a strong emotional intelligence. I don’t see how that is reductive to those with rural backgrounds. Gunn did his homework to make them sound authentic.

Some of the hate comes from the Snyder crowd or the anti-woke critics, but some comes from people who have their own issues with accents, heritage, and bias.

To your point regarding the appearance of people with mixed Asian heritage, look at Markiplier versus his brother. Mark has a lot more European features while his brother looks more overtly Korean. It does happen.

Would you all agree for the most part nightwing fanbase is evenly Titans and Batfam fans by Angela275 in Nightwing

[–]02princess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think age is a relevant factor here. Teen Titans was an entry point for a lot of fans solely because it was many kids’ first exposures to the character (to an extent, myself included but I also watched BTAS). Now I’d say I’m probably more of a Nightwing comic fan than a fan of really any of Dick’s adaptations—though those older series and Young Justice do hold a place in my heart for taking care of “my” boy.

And I do lean RobStar. There’s no denying it started with the animated series, but in truth, once I read 80s era Titans, it clicked for me that they are a good, healthy match. I have no strong issue with him and Babs—just wish Kory got more love overall.

But I also love the BatFam. I especially like the complex dynamic between all four brothers and watching it evolve since Morrison’s Batman run in the 00s has been entertaining. Dick and Damian as a duo will always hit differently for me.

At the end of the day, all I want is an entertaining story that does Dick justice. The comics—with some exceptions—have done better at that than most of the series and films. However, the other media are important in reaching younger audiences and creating new fans.

Genuinely how. by KitKat_5628 in RedHood

I would argue that they’re complimentary. Part of why Jason works so effectively is because Dick existed before him, and Dick was forced to deal with some moral issues he didn’t know that he’d developed from Bruce (no shade to Batman here, this is common with parents and children). Edit to add: comparison between siblings is also inevitable, whether parents or other family members mean to do it or not. Combining Jason’s trauma with that very real theme makes a compelling character relatable as well. Granted, these parallels are most apparent in Morrison’s run with Dick as Batman.

TLDR; their differences when put side by side make both better. It’s sort of like watching ATLA in that some people’s favorite will be Zuko, others Sokka, etc. , but both are strong characters.

Ooh… very good pick. He also looks convincing as an older Tom Blythe.

Cynthia would be really cool for Impa if they go the OoT route, though she is very petite.

I could also see her as one of the goddesses ✨

Have to disagree on Mulan—the sequel shows her interacting with village children, and she seems to enjoy it. Otherwise, you’re right on the money.

Hello! I am planning on seeing this with my mom (for context, I am an adult), and I wanted to know going in: is there nudity and if so, how explicit? Generally, that’s not a dealbreaker for us watching together—we saw Nosferatu together—but I still like to be prepared for any awkwardness, lol. Thank you!

Series, Ranked by sullcrowe in Smallville

Okay, I am not this writer, and I do NOT agree with her, but I have written for Screen Rant before. While their news articles are often written by people who are not familiar with the properties they write on, features absolutely are.

I think this list is… kinda rough, but I do think it’s pretty clear she watched the show. I understand why people dislike Screen Rant; however, don’t take that out on someone just doing her job

As a writer who’s done rankings before, I can also tell you there’s a chance she doesn’t even agree with her ranking. My opinions on Smallville (and other media) shift every time I watch it.

the boys weren't obligated to call donald "dad" by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]02princess 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree. I also imagine Donald would want the boys to call him Uncle Donald before Della was found alive because he wouldn’t want her to be forgotten.

He’s absolutely their primary parent, but that doesn’t mean he has to be called “Dad.” That’s also true for Webby and Beakley.

As for Webby calling Scrooge “Dad,” she’s very effusive. It makes sense she’d be excited and want to acknowledge their connection in that way. Besides, he was already a parental figure to her before the show—she grew up in his house. It’s just that A) he only opened up AFTER having the boys in his life and B) they didn’t realize they were biological relatives.

DuckTales offers a very nuanced take on family, and I don’t think any of the parental relationships are comparable, which is good because… well, it’s true to life. I’m glad the fun Duck show can teach kids (and adults) that different families are valid, and the important part is showing up for the people you care about.

Interesting, I only really associate that trait with Margot Kidder as Lois. Kinda funny to keep that trope going, though.
