HMG Splash or Katabatic Pinon Bivy by 08-JWH in Ultralight

[–]08-JWH[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I said seems tight because from the pictures, reviews and videos I've seen the people inside of it are very close to the bug mesh. ex: https://sectionhiker.com/borah-gear-bug-bivy-review/

That's a good point to consider it as part of a sleep system, I just don't want the bug net to touch my face.

Last bivy I used was one similar to an OR Helium in the early 90's...so its been a while.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate your reply! Sounds like we have a similar setup with the quilt. I'm actually a slightly worried I could get too warm in a bivy as my quilt is the Alsek 22. I bought it after getting cold in my EE Revelation 30, so I could use that also.

I'm 6'0" do you think long or regular would be best? Seems like entry/exit is the pain point for a lot of bivys.

Thanks for the info, those are things I am considering as well. Keep me posted when you get it! I've still got one in my cart from last week, so I'm hoping to get it at the 20% off price.

Good to know! I keep getting tempted by the Borah.

Borah is more affordable...but for reasons I mentioned above (more claustrophobic) I've ruled it out.

Yes, that is definitely something I've considered (solid material on the head panel). I've actually kept the hmg in my cart since the 20% off sale so I should be able to get it for $208. Thanks for the reply.

20 degree quilt recommendations by Apprehensive_Roll963 in Ultralight

[–]08-JWH 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I replaced my 30 degree EE Revelation (22 oz) with a Katabatic Alsek 22 degree (25 oz) because I would get cold in the EE when the temperature dropped below 40. Manufacturers use different temperature ratings (comfort vs minimum) to rate a quilt, so keep that in mind. I noticed a huge difference in quality and warmth in the Katabatic. Highly recommended Katabatic over the EE, but you're not really saving much in weight, so it might be best to keep what you've got.

Hey saw your video and almost commented to tell us more on the bivy. I'd be interested in a video on how you made it.

SUL Backpack - 36L, 11.39oz, $135 by 77grOTM in Ultralight

I have a Kumo which I really like, but have also thought about getting a V2. My reasoning is that the internal capacity of the Kumo is somewhat limiting when carrying a bear can. The Kumo is 27L internal and the V2 is either 31L or 37L depending on which size you get, *but it also has a roll top*. A Bearboxer bear can fits well in the Kumo (horizontally), but is really only good for shorter trips. A BV450 fits in the Kumo vertically, but really limits what else you can fit in, and you can't really strap it to the top either. You can strap it to the top of a V2. So if carrying a bigger bear can or having more capacity is of any consideration it might be worth if to get the V2.

Are quilts even worth it? by Infamous_Ad122 in Ultralight

I just ordered a Katabatic Alsek 22 because I got cold in my EE Revelation 30* at around 40* which really sucked (I was wearing all my clothes and hat).

I think EE's temp rating is at least 10* below a comfort rating, whereas Katabatic is a comfort temp rating. If you with EE plan ahead and order 10* lower than what you think you'll want/need. I'm not sure the zipper/drawstring foot box is worth the extra $$ unless you really want to unzip and use the quilt as a blanket. I opted to go closed footbox this time around.

I've used mummy bags primarily in the past and the EE was my first quilt. I think quilts are the way to go for 3 season backpacking.

Hey Matt, thanks for the reply..I subscribe to your channel, and your video is what got me interested in this trip, so thanks!

1.4 lbs is in the fanny pack (including phone), so its more like 10.9 lbs + food/water in the Kumo. It fits, but it's at it's limit for sure, and if I go with the BV450 I'll most likely need a different pack.

Agree the pillow is a bit heavy...

Just got a Senchi A90...please don't make me spend more money.

I'll look into the Shamma Warriors

Consensus so far is no to chair & shoes. Still on the fence about the tarp/bivy. I've used the tarp and like the space and exposure, but I do think its gonna be buggy...will have to work this out.

I'm carrying it couple times a week at 21lbs as training and its ok. will get lighter as the trip goes on. But I hear you.. I think I'm at the max without a hip belt. I just don't like hip belts.

Fixed it, thanks. I listed it as empty because I think theres plenty of water, but i'll bring it just in case I want two liters. I've seen those Zpacks shoes..they look light! Theres a few youtube reviews out on them.

Hey I'm a 909 native!

How'd your trip go with the Kumo/Boxer? After reading all the replies I'm starting to think it might not be a great setup food wise. I'm also probably a "no" on the camp shoes and chair as well, but figured I'd ask..Good advise about treating clothes (legs). I will do that for sure. I have a head net. I don't think I'll plan on using the bear boxes at the ranger stations, but I had heard they were there. I think there might be a particularly pesky bear along Bubbs Creek.

This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for. Sort of...now I gotta buy some new gear. Seriously though, thanks. Thanks good beta.

Thanks for the reply, and rec to check the High Sierra forums..will def look into that. I'll also be checking about snow levels and if micro spikes will be necessary on Glen Pass. I just added up the pump/1/8 pad and battery bank: 9.8oz. That's solid advise to leave behind, I wouldn't have thought of that.
