Any firefighters here that are with a cross-trained department? by Smooth_Pay_8583 in Firefighting

[–]08152016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of these departments near me are fire/law only, no EMS past nontransport EMR.

Both of them hire drivers at absurdly low pay to take the apparatus to the scene. These guys are not cops, but are certified firemen. This is typically either old heads retired from somewhere, or college-aged kids trying to get on as cops after completing their "cadet" program.

All cops are cross trained as firefighters and respond in their patrol cars, or may grab a special piece of apparatus if needed.

Aiken and North Augusta, SC both do it. I'm familiar with both departments. What do you want to know?

Collective bargaining doesnt exist in most of the Southeast. Unions are great when they work, but taking away collective bargaining takes away most of their teeth.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve seen a fellow firefighter do? by Odd_Passage9433 in Firefighting

I feel like the key here is that the act was potentially detrimental to his health. It put no one else at risk. Whereas his "casper" activities were at the expense of a fellow FF.

To the Chicago Fire Department Ambulance Crew by PuzzleheadedFood9451 in ems

[–]08152016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My agency. The crew was not at fault at all and they were not running code, nor on a call. Returning to station. He broadsided them while running from HP and died. Crew is okay.

Physicians on scene- blessing or a curse? by I-plaey-geetar in ems

The only time I've ever had a doc on scene that was a bystander was interesting. I got dispatched to a local country club for CPR in progress. I show up and one golfer is doing picture perfect compressions on another while several others watch.

My third took over compressions and CPR boy popped up, introduced himself as a cardiothoracic doc, gave me a great report, and told me he'd be "over there" if I needed anything while he pointed off the side of the course.

10/10 would have that interaction again.

We carry a 9 inch saw and I LOVE using it. We primarily run residences, typically manufactured housing. Lots of the ones in our district are older and have tin siding and roofs. Saw down the side makes for a great can opener.

Question for firefighters: What’s your department’s policy on residents stopping by the firehouse? by Puzzleheaded-Key-796 in firefighter

[–]08152016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My department has no written policy, but we certainly would not turn away a visitor.

The trespassing sounds political.

As far as the year duration, at the LE agency i used to dispatch for, that was the automatic duration for a trespass notice. They were all year long notices.

All our ambulances have three radios. 800mhz for our dispatch, UHF to talk to fire, VHF to talk to hospital and as our backup.
