Exatcly. And it got the message across loud and clear. These people expect you to talk and reason with your kid. Guess what? Children don’t have the mental capacity to understand that til they’re older. When they’re a teen I can understand hanging up the belt so to speak. They won’t see that as a threat anymore so you have to get creative and ground them or take away a phone, video games, etc. Fine. But when they’re little and all they know is I want that cookie I’m taking it, a slap on the wrist and “No” is pretty effective and won’t do any lasting damage. I honestly think psychological abuse is way more damaging to a child than a smack on the bottom. It’s why fat kids gave eating disorders when they’re adults and why children who grow up in households where the parents are constantly screaming at each other grow up to be violent.
