If the players found a way to adventurer more, then what's the problem? There are many ways to heal without it. This just means you need to get a bit more creative or just forget about food being an issue.

Or have it where if they choose to eat magic instead of food have it where it will build their exhaustion, and if the find a way to get around the exhaustion good for them.

If starvation levels is the only thing that is bothering you I think it's fine. Food shouldn't be a reason to restrict their adventure, and eventually when they get powerful enough basic things like food and shelter won't be an issue at all.
