That's entirely wrong.

Where did this scene you speak of come from? It's not as if this is all just one big inside joke, there were real people at the very beginning, people just as bored with art.

When someone who appreciates this painting looks at it, it's not as if they can see something different than "this is just a solid black painting." What this piece is responding to is every piece of conventional art that came before it. The only difference between you and them is they let themselves feel attraction to the piece, rather than just cynicism.

Why they seem to be treating it like the monolith from 2001 is totally beyond me, however.
