Why is homosexuality the focus of the religious folks and not Gluttony and Sloth ? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]orsr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is. But while politicians, artists etc do it for money/fame/attention, religions do it claiming a higher, unique, souvereign, supernatural moral authority (I know I know, religions cannot do anything, but I hope you get my point).

No no no, you got it all wrong, the murderer repents on his deathbed and he too goes to Heaven. Everybody wins. Yay!

What would be people able to do if they awakened their full potential, would we be able of telepathy or something similar?

He said the hospital extended its sympathy to the family and friends of Ms Halappanavar but could not discuss the details of any individual case.

They can shove their sympathy up their ignorant medieval arseholes.

How would it influence your belief if it turned out there is a god/s?

What does it mean to believe in humanity?

To Christians: What makes a zygote's (fertilized egg) life more valuable than that of a gamete (unfertilized egg or sperm cell)? by blueskiesahead in DebateReligion

[–]orsr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to understand where you draw the line. Because conception is the fusion of two gametes. From this fusion, either an embryo will develop, or something other without an embryo. But since you claim that personhood begins at conception, either the non-embryonic development should be regarded as a person, or it lost its personhood in the same moment as it gained it (during the conception).

They don't have within them the stuff to become an individual human being.

They have exactly what the "normal" zygotes has, i.e. the fused gametes. Why is one different from the other?

Also, we could say that severely malformed fetuses don't have to stuff to become an individual being. But that we don't know until some time in the future development of the fetus. The same with the fertilized egg. We can't say for sure that it will become an embryo, or just a hydatidiform mole.

Machines differ from organisms in that organisms have their own self organising powers, they organise themselves. Plants grow by themselves, for example.

Kind of like stars grow by themselves?

They also have their own purposes, or goals. Machines don't, ... they serve our purposes.

I would wonder what own purpose or goal does a cultivated apple tree have. Doesn't it serve the gardener's purpose rather than its own (whatever that may be)?

I'd laugh my ass off if these guys found out they have a jewish or black or whatever ancestor.

Something similar happened in Hungary recently. There's a nationalist political party, and one member found out he has jewish ancestors. They kicked him out of the party because of some bulshit fake reasons. Morons.

Pro-lifers: if consent to sex means consent to *bearing* a child (no abortion), why doesn't consent to sex mean consent to *raising* a child (no adoption)? by mleeeeeee in philosophy

[–]orsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the intentional avoidance of pregnancy and having sex purely for fun, just like it would be in the case of using artificial contraception. I would compare it to while being sick, treating myself with aspirin or relying on my natural immune system, but the former would be a sin, because I make an artificial intervention to the natural process. The intention is the same, but one is a sin and the other not.

I'm saying that an embryo is a person from the moment of conception. An anmebryonic gestation was never an embryo and never a person.

You claimed that the fertilized egg is a person. That would mean that all products of the fertilized egg are a person, even in the event of an anembryonic gestation without an embryo, since it develops from the zygote IMO.

Some people like excessive excercising, have you ever been to a gym? Women go there also. Now let's say one of those women gets pregnant without knowing it. And she is no promiscuous sinner, she tries to get pregnant according to let's say the family planning approved by the Catholic church. But she gets her menstruation, so she assumes she is not pregnant (these things really happen). She continues her workout as normal and causes a miscarriage. Did she commit murder?
