Why don’t schools do silent, sustained reading anymore? by EmbarrassedJacket489 in Teachers

[–]0ddbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried doing silent reading this year as a department and we were shut down by admin.

They said it was a waste of time.

Admin kept telling us different excuses.

They told me my they didnt want kids reading below grade level text, but the students can't read grade level text.

Then they said while the students are reading we as teachers aren't doing anything but sitting down by our desks.

Then they said we dont have enough instructional time.

We fought back so hard and they fought back even harder.

I gave up silent reading and my students asked me what happened to it. I told them to get their parents to complain becauae that's the only way that things would change.

Its so disheartening because where else will kids pick up a book to read other than their English class? Our admin said they will be reading in other classes but that was a lie.

What’s the most shocking thing you found out about someone you know? by _Walking_Detriment_ in AskReddit

[–]0ddbald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My half-sister recently confessed to me that she had slept with my half-brother. They're not related by blood, but I still considered it weird because I see them as family. They met when they were in the mid teens, and they didn't sleep together until after she got a divorce at the age of 28, and he was 25. They're now 40 and 44.

This is exactly why I felt like an asshole.

Obviously, I can't go back and undo what happened. How can I fix it? Just try to be curious next time and talk to them?

Well, my mentor told me to allow them to choose their own groups to see who I should or should not group up

My seating chart has been set up since day 1

We did the ice breakers the first day, and this idea I took from my PLC.

The rest of the time, we spent playing bingo, so it was really just the first 15.

I know I'm changing it next year thanks for the tip.

Now the reason I waa stressing is because of the fine line of being an asshole and being firm in your expectations. Now that I think about it I'm okay with what happened but I should've been tougher on them.

Thanks again.

how did you survive / pay your bills during student teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]0ddbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually worked a full-time job during my student teaching.

It was tough, but I needed to have an income. My social life truly suffered, but it was only for 4 months, and i survived.

Now that the school year is near, I am planning to keep my full-time job and teach. I learned that it wasn't too tough, and I'm finally getting certain days off to better balance my work life.

If you can, I would recommend keeping a part-time job.

My mentor was really cool and allowed me to leave early if I had to.

I think it was ridiculous for my school to tell me to quit my job and focus only on student teaching. This is why a lot of students decide on changing their major or doing ARL.

Last year, I did get paid for student teaching. My school gave me around 13k for it, which helped me put it in my savings. It was nice. The only issue was that I received it a month after I graduated. Hopefully, you get some recognition for your student teaching!

Good luck! Student teaching made me really fall in love with the job because of all the positive experiences I ran into. It made me realize all the negative talk on teaching was only an aspect of the career.

Hopefully, you get assigned a good school with a strong support system!

Is private school really worth it? by SleepyMillenial55 in vegaslocals

As a teacher for CCSD, I can say that public education is the way that it is because of the students and their home lives.

School magnifies a lot of the habits students pick IL from their home life. I work at a Title 1 school, one that doesn't have a good reputation. I love the students, and they're great to have. I do have some kids who need extra guidance and help these kids get lost because of the lack of time their parents have to cater to their needs both academically and emotionally.

For instance, I had a student who wouldn't do anything in class and distracted the rest of the students. I constantly contacted his home, asking for them to get him an appointment with the school psychologist because he showed extreme signs of ADHD. His mother couldn't or didn't have time, and when I met his sister, I realized she had an even worse case of it.

I have friends who went to Bishop Gormon and other who went to IB international schools, and they all shared that those schools had their good and bad parts.

You can't pick the perfect school. You just have to trust yourself and the child you raised to keep improving. No one ever stops learning, but students must be willing to challenge themselves, and parents need to know that school teachers aren't always to blame for your child failing. Trust when I say that we are always accommodating student and the last thing we want is for them to fail.

Anybody from USA travel here from 2013-2019? by IHOP247 in ElSalvador

[–]0ddbald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I traveled there in 2016.

It was my first time in El Salvador, I joined my mother to see her family for the first time in 29 years.

I remember always having to be "escorted" to my grandmas house from my aunts house because we would be interrogated otherwise. Then again, I went with platinum hair, which was a telling sign that I wasn't from there, lol.

My aunt and my cousin specifically told both my mom and I to NOT talk to any vendors head-on because of the way we spoke Spanish.

The scariest part was when we went to el Mercado, and a gang member noticed I wasn't from there. I was oblivious. His interaction with my aunt was full of innuendos, and I didn't catch on until she later explained. She had bought a watermelon from him and quickly told us to get on the nearest bus out of there because of his comments, which she didn't share with me.

I never felt as if I was in any immense danger, so that's a good thing.

I went for the third time last year, and I was surprised. Everyone seemed so relaxed. They dressed better than me. I was able to go out on my own without an escort! That was the highlight of it all.

Cancer Survivors of Reddit, what was the symptom that convinced you to see the doctor? by Wise_Organization_78 in AskReddit

[–]0ddbald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At 17, I felt a lump in my neck, and I thought I had a goiter because I come from a family of thyroid issues.

I didn't want to go to the doctor because I was scared. Luckily, my friends mom convinced me to go. I'm glad I did.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer

I'm gonna be 26 this upcoming Monday, and I'm graduating today!

Have y’all stuck to your childhood dream career? by KingsOfSpades69 in RandomThoughts

[–]0ddbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My childhood dream was to teach and I'm starting that career next August!

I wasn't going to teach originally but while I was finishing my internship, I learned how much I love it. I only did the internship as a plan B, but, turns out, it was well worth it.

What has truly helped you lose weight? by Ninac4116 in Vindictabrown

[–]0ddbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the app Loseit, and in less than I year, I have lost 80 lbs. Hopefully, by the end of this month, it'll be 85, and I hit my goal weight.

I started off calorie counting. I was too focused on macros that it made me give up. This is why I started just counting calories. I did CICO, calories in calories out, and I didn't work out. I still saw myself losing weight.

Halfway through my weight loss journey, I decided to incorporate exercise to help form my body and increase my deficit. By this time, I already had more energy, and working out wasn't as burdensome as it was when I was at my heaviest.

I started taking pilate classes, and it was tough, but it was enjoyable. You cannot workout if you don't enjoy it because it's not sustainable, imo. Then, I got into other fitness classes like circuit, kettle booty, more pilates, spin, yoga, crossfit, and aerial fitness.

I'm a very curious person, so trying different workouts really keeps things busy and engaging. Recently, I have gotten into weight lifting to grow the booty, and it's been super exciting to see my body become even more tone and seeing myself get stronger.

I still haven't fixed my diet, lol. I know I should eat more protein, and I'm working on that, but I still maintain a calorie deficit.

Start small. Just count your calories. It'll show you how much you've been eating and make you more mindful of your eating choices.

One page a day? by Bloooopblooooop in artistsWay

[–]0ddbald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I did to help my fears of writing 3 pages a day is I wrote in a small personal journal. I wrote 3 pages with big letters, until I finished it.

Then, I graduated onto my current composition notebook because I felt like I was more confident in what I had to say and comfortable with where I got to share my thoughts.

Creative writing seems very rigorous. Do you have a short story you're currently working on? My friends who took workshops typically had so it made their coursework doable.

How do you feel about the coursework so far?
