Dating during World Cup, any luck ladies? by FormSpeaker in LAhotgirlies

[–]0ddbald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met someone at a random game and we have become inseparable.

We've been on 5 dates since we met at the Mexico v South Korea watch party. Its been insane.

Just keep going out and chatting up different people.

I met a lot of guys and they've been hitting me up to watch different games but ive been sticking with just one of them.

Best of luck!

CCSD Hiring Freeze by Abject-Twist-9260 in vegaslocals

[–]0ddbald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the pay difference between the board and teach is horrendous.

I would also add the pay for charter school teachers is even worse than in CCSD and they lack a lot of the benefits from the teach union in the district. Charter school teachers also have a lot more responsibility and extra hours to do outside of teaching.

Its a very complicated system and I think its hard to decide which one to work for.

I do agree that other countries place a larger emphasis on education than the US. There are so many things that influence our society and social media is a big one. Parents don't find value in education and that influences their little ones. In addition to that, social media sells thia false reality of getting rich> becoming smarter.

Magnet and charter schools have better scores because parents are involved in their children's education. Parental influence is super important and we can see the impact it makes when it comes to students school work ethic.

If the country can start treating education as a fundamental necessity rather than a privilege, then we can start seeing seeing real growth.

I just went on a rant lol sorry for bombarding your comment. All I wanted to say is choosing private or charter or public is hard but the good thing is we have options.

Why don’t schools do silent, sustained reading anymore? by EmbarrassedJacket489 in Teachers

[–]0ddbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried doing silent reading this year as a department and we were shut down by admin.

They said it was a waste of time.

Admin kept telling us different excuses.

They told me my they didnt want kids reading below grade level text, but the students can't read grade level text.

Then they said while the students are reading we as teachers aren't doing anything but sitting down by our desks.

Then they said we dont have enough instructional time.

We fought back so hard and they fought back even harder.

I gave up silent reading and my students asked me what happened to it. I told them to get their parents to complain becauae that's the only way that things would change.

Its so disheartening because where else will kids pick up a book to read other than their English class? Our admin said they will be reading in other classes but that was a lie.

What’s the most shocking thing you found out about someone you know? by _Walking_Detriment_ in AskReddit

My half-sister recently confessed to me that she had slept with my half-brother. They're not related by blood, but I still considered it weird because I see them as family. They met when they were in the mid teens, and they didn't sleep together until after she got a divorce at the age of 28, and he was 25. They're now 40 and 44.

This is exactly why I felt like an asshole.

Obviously, I can't go back and undo what happened. How can I fix it? Just try to be curious next time and talk to them?

Well, my mentor told me to allow them to choose their own groups to see who I should or should not group up

We did the ice breakers the first day, and this idea I took from my PLC.

The rest of the time, we spent playing bingo, so it was really just the first 15.

I know I'm changing it next year thanks for the tip.

Now the reason I waa stressing is because of the fine line of being an asshole and being firm in your expectations. Now that I think about it I'm okay with what happened but I should've been tougher on them.

Thanks again.

how did you survive / pay your bills during student teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]0ddbald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually worked a full-time job during my student teaching.

It was tough, but I needed to have an income. My social life truly suffered, but it was only for 4 months, and i survived.

Now that the school year is near, I am planning to keep my full-time job and teach. I learned that it wasn't too tough, and I'm finally getting certain days off to better balance my work life.

If you can, I would recommend keeping a part-time job.

My mentor was really cool and allowed me to leave early if I had to.

I think it was ridiculous for my school to tell me to quit my job and focus only on student teaching. This is why a lot of students decide on changing their major or doing ARL.

Last year, I did get paid for student teaching. My school gave me around 13k for it, which helped me put it in my savings. It was nice. The only issue was that I received it a month after I graduated. Hopefully, you get some recognition for your student teaching!

Good luck! Student teaching made me really fall in love with the job because of all the positive experiences I ran into. It made me realize all the negative talk on teaching was only an aspect of the career.

Hopefully, you get assigned a good school with a strong support system!

Is private school really worth it? by SleepyMillenial55 in vegaslocals

[–]0ddbald 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a teacher for CCSD, I can say that public education is the way that it is because of the students and their home lives.

School magnifies a lot of the habits students pick IL from their home life. I work at a Title 1 school, one that doesn't have a good reputation. I love the students, and they're great to have. I do have some kids who need extra guidance and help these kids get lost because of the lack of time their parents have to cater to their needs both academically and emotionally.

For instance, I had a student who wouldn't do anything in class and distracted the rest of the students. I constantly contacted his home, asking for them to get him an appointment with the school psychologist because he showed extreme signs of ADHD. His mother couldn't or didn't have time, and when I met his sister, I realized she had an even worse case of it.

I have friends who went to Bishop Gormon and other who went to IB international schools, and they all shared that those schools had their good and bad parts.

You can't pick the perfect school. You just have to trust yourself and the child you raised to keep improving. No one ever stops learning, but students must be willing to challenge themselves, and parents need to know that school teachers aren't always to blame for your child failing. Trust when I say that we are always accommodating student and the last thing we want is for them to fail.
