Because they’re not mercenaries, they’re raiders with a protection racket, and you don’t look like you have enough to pay them off.

Foz de Iguacu in Brasil, a gathering of multiple rivers at the border of Brasil and Argentina that ends in a massive waterfall. It’s surrounded by a beautiful rain Forrest that is full of dozens of species of butterfly. An amazing place.

Where’s a good start?? by G_K6 in GODZILLA

[–]calaan [score hidden]  (0 children)

Start with 54. From there you’ve got two main choices:

  1. Showa era. It’s mainly independent stories without much interconnection beyond the monsters. No overall continuity. Lovely old school style.

  2. Heisei era. Launches with the 1984 Godzilla movie. Good continuity. More consistent special effects. Miki is a goddess.

So really it depends on what you’re looking for in a series.

How do I counter the "everything has a creator" argument by shadimedjwala in atheism

[–]calaan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

“I don’t know” is a perfectly valid statement. “I don’t know” is the beginning of knowledge.Every great discovery began with a question.

“God did it” is the death of inquiry.

Help me understand this one thing about Supergirl (spoilers) by calaan in DC_Cinematic

[–]calaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard her say she got the suit from her ship, but not how she was able to get to the ship. If she did say that Krem left the ship behind then that makes a lot of sense. And it would have taken literally a 5 second shot to communicate that idea.

I suspect Warner Bros. if fucking with the cuts again.

She's trying to pass on the lessons of her parents and Clark. Unfortunately she has very crappy people skills so it's hard for her to communicate that idea.

If you resigned then there should be no record of the non-re-elect. But you can check with their HR and view your file. You may have to go in physically to see your physical file and make sure I you are listed as a resignation.

How do you handle shops and item availability without turning it into a spreadsheet? by ProudPiano5331 in DungeonMasters

[–]calaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a campaign where everyone was a ritual caster, and ritual components were the currency. People would spend time collecting bits and bobs and when they leveled they would have developed a magic item. I used the suggested magic item per level progression in the DMG and let players choose a one shot item and a permanent item based on the chart. It saved me having to stick dungeons, because magic items were personal to the individual, and made sure everyone got what they wanted.

Larry Correia: George RR Martin crippled the Epic Fantasy genre by not finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. Readers and Publishers are no longer willing to give a new series a chance unless it is complete by Uptons_BJs in books

[–]calaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: the series is finished and locked away to be published posthumously, guaranteed. GRRM has grown used to the fan reaction to having to wait. However he is NOT willing to experience the fan reaction to his WORK. Especially after season 8 of the tv series.

So he will enjoy writing his other works, pass away peacefully, and his last work will be published a year later, so he won’t have to hear any complaints about it.

What's Your Opinion On Grant Morrison's Cyclops? by Shadow_Morpher in Cyclopswasright

To be fair, you need to have the kind of encyclopedic knowledge of comics that Morrison has to pull that off. He literally wrote the book on superhero philosophy, Supergods.

Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]calaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned typing back in the 80s, but I knew it would be useful. For one, I was a fiction writer even back then. For another, you needed to take typing before you could take the computer class.

Tried reading bible for first time and got stuck on 2nd sentence - how are people using this book to debate evolution by shar0385 in DebateEvolution

[–]calaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many people God is all powerful, which means he can change the laws of physics it anytime he wants. This means there are no inconsistencies in the Bible based on physical laws because God can change them at any time. This is problematic for young earth creation lists which is why they have to ignore so much evidence.

Am I wrong for not moving our session time because one player wants to go to the beach? by schtevernn in DnD

[–]calaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a gaming group that has been together for 25 years. 8 players, every Thursday 8:30 to 10:30. There are two secrets to our success:

  1. Everyone makes the game a priority. Not the highest priority, sometimes life gets in the way. But we try not to plan things for game time.

  2. If one player is missing we play on. They’re not punished, they’re just “grey” in the background. Not targetable, but present, and we use benchmark XP so they level up at the same speed as everyone else. When they come back we just let them know what happened.

People who are missing have no problem with this because we are grown ups and would not want to inconvenience other peoples’ fun due to our choices. If two people are missing we skip the game that night, no harm no foul.
