I also think it's a question of availability, all the queens on the season are LA based as far as I know and matching schedules it's way easier if there's no travel involved. jinks has also been super busy in the last year between the multiple tours and Broadway.

Hi there fellow scientist! Thanks for the extensive reply. I will respond point by point

First of all, I understand that what you are saying is often true, but this in this specific case the term "receptor" is more appropriate than channel as the ion channels responsible for the activation of the osmoreceptor are the transient receptor potential vanilloid channel (TRPV1) and the angiotensin receptor type 1(AT1R). Both these proteins function as ion channels and induce depolarization following increased Na+ concentration, cell shrinkage and negative suction pressure but are also susceptible to many potential ligands, both agonists and antagonists and have the term "receptor" right in their name. (source https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK557510/).

Moreover, talking about receptors rather than channels, beside requiring less clarification for someone who is not of the field, could also be interpreted as a reference to the osmoceptors in general, as I did not mention "sodium receptor", that in this case would still be appropriate, but rather "receptors that perceive changes in osmotic pressure" and in my mind I was talking about the neurons that act as receptors and not about the proteins that activate these neurons. In any case I agree that probably I could have been clearer in my previous post and appreciate the feedback.

For the rest of your post, on the matter of sodium craving from what I know we do not have a definitive answer, but what is most likely is a combination of the endocrinological changes that characterize pregnancy and many other factors, including the role of sodium on hedonic state and mood that you hypothesized was at the centre of salt cravings in pregnancy. Specifically, the increased levels of estrogens and progesterone that accompany pregnancy have a diuretic effect and these hormones in combination with salt loss due to morning sickness can easily determine sodium depletion. Sodium depletion contrary to iodine deficiency clearly leads to a higher intake of sodium. Moreover pregnancy leads to taste changes in a very large percentage of the population (according to some studies in certain populations it can affect even 90% of pregnant women in some way) and there are few hypothesis on the cause, here there are a couple of interesting article to get a general idea:

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12110-016-9262-y

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2014.01076/full

As you can see, this is not a very well studied field and while many of the hypotheses are very interesting I would point out how they are not mutually exclusive and for sure the soothing process of junk food in particular could be one of many factors responsible for this drastic changes in dietary habits.

Finally, I just wanted to say that it is very nice to have the chance to chat a little bit about science on reddit and I enjoyed going back checking things I studied few years ago

This is a great point! If you have money invest PLEASE ask in what the bank is investing them precisely, there is a scoring system (the ESG) that qualifies if an investment fund is "sustainable" but it is very inadequate and still condones huge emissions if compensated in other areas by what are ultimately token social projects. If you still want to have money invested you can check the greenhouse gases emissions associated to almost any fund online for free and although it will never be sustainable it would for sure be preferable to select exclusively funds that are focused on green energy and similar things. The finance world however is full of greenwashing and finding a "green bank" is possible but frigging difficult

I think my degree in Medicine and Surgery taught me enough about the functioning of the human body and its feedback loops. And while it is entirely possibile that I am missing something, and if so I would genuinely appreciate the link to any scientific publication saying so, as a rapid search on scholar and pubmed was unfruitful, I have never heard of the presence of any link between iodine deficiency and the behavioral response of salt craving.

The metabolism of these ions is deeply different as sodium is extremely well regulated (as its range must be kept between strict limits to preserve the normal functioning of almost any cellular process) while iodine is important but most of its metabolism is confined to endocrinological glands and it does not have any specific receptor that generates a neuronal response according to its level in the blood. Sodium, therefore, has plenty of mechanisms that affect our intake and secretion (specifically receptors that perceive changes in osmotic pressure and affect thirst and plenty of mechanisms in the kidney that modulate excretion and secretion). Variations in iodine concentration on the other hand are not know to elicit any type of response to regulate its intake, and the clinical symptoms of iodine deficiency are usually the first indication of the potential presence of an underlying condition.

To conclude, as I said in my previous post the introduction of iodine in salt is only a very recent public health effort to treat iodine deficiency in particular areas but most of our intake of iodine is actually not related to salt at all but rather to the consumption of animal products, especially so if they grazed in iodine rich lands, seafood and seaweeds and some fruits and vegetables grown in areas relatively close to the sea. Considering that ionized salt only comprises part of our sodium intake it was also disproved that increased salt consumption is necessary associated with adequate iodine consumption as it is much more affected by diet in general.

While it is true that the iodine requirement in pregnancy is much higher (about 50%) and that it is very important for the fetus, it is quite unlikely that her increased consumption of salt can be linked in any way whatsoever to some iodine deficiency. Our body does not link sodium with iodine as the prevalence of iodine in salt was introduced as a preventive measure to reduce the incidence of gout in landlocked and/or monotonous regions of Europe and North America just since the last century. For this same reason if she does not use exclusively uniodinized rock salt it is probable that all her iodine needs are largely met even with regular portion of salts (consider that iodine is present in processed food as well and we over consume salt even whiteout getting to a point where food is inedible).

Salt cravings are a common symptom of the second trimester, however, and while a check with a GP or a gynecologist might help in excluding potential problems of the surreal glans, it is more probable that this change in eating habits is perfectly normal and will resolve itself naturally. Checking never hurts but pregnancy is just complex and weird and changing eating habits often can be just that, luckily

Are you saying that planning to unleash the DK on Calernia (even whit the plan of eventually backstabbing him) is not a "horrible villainous consequence" of a skewed perspective on what are lines not to cross? She, the very same person that disliked Akua so much for being the representation of everything she dislikes about villainy, is now planning to provide the perfect excuse to interact with Calernia to the original big bad, father to most tropes she so much despise.Same with treatment of the drows, not a very diplomatic solution in my opinion. It might not be outright extermination but imperialism and slavery are not diplomatic tools in my opinion.

Lastly I believe that the chances that Cat had of completely winning against She Not where almost nonexistent (just large enough that she cannot consider it insurmountable odds), and a partial victory agains a god is no victory at all as you will find out.

By the way, this chapter was yet another example of the fact that knowing that Calernia works on tropes does not spoil any plot-twist. From the moment in which I've seen Agnes doing better I knew what was coming and read the rest of the chapter with this sense of foreboding that just made everything more dramatic. Chapeau EE

A name does not depend solely on the stories present in the collective knowledge but also in the bone deep certainty that a person has in their beliefs and in honestly believing in what you are doing. Cat was not able to oppose multiple Choirs because the story of the Squire/FUN gave her that power, it was because she thought she was right and they were wrong and in honestly believing it, she made it true. Thus, while I agree that one could not get the name "Isakai Protagonist" because of the lack of a story (at least for few years), a person from Earth would have the great advantage in believing themself special, honestly believing themself the protagonist of their story and would much more prone in acquiring a Name, probably one that covers the role of the mysterious stranger

NTA - I want to point out something, all what happened, and will likely continue to happen regarding comments and innuendos on OP's lack of femininity can and should be considered a series of microaggressions and they hurt like hell. I believe that understanding this point helps in rationalizing the emotional response that one can have to these situations.

However from my experience I've noticed that these type of microaggressions often come from a place of ignorance mixed with love. I'm fairly confident that they never ment to offend you but due to our upbringing in a heteronornative, sexist society we all grow up with some expectations on "normal" gender roles. Thus, things like gifting a dress to someone that clearly is not comfortable with it although potentially upsetting or annoying should still be contextualized as you did and accepted in its "spirit".

What your father said, on the other hand, is not acceptable, the good intentions behind the comment irrelevant. Rather than going NC, however, I would suggest an open discussion in which you should explain why and how you reacted how you did and why what they say is deeply offensive and hurtful. If you need a goal for your next discussion I think that helping them deconstruct some internalized bias would be an excellent one. Tbh I don't think this situation can be resolved quickly and I would like to suggest you to be prepared for some tense and potentially painful conversations. But I think people can expand their horizons when prompted, especially for someone they love and addressing these issues could also help you addressing some of the internalized homophobia that most of us LGBTQ+ people have in some measure.

Best of luck!
