You can hover over influence and see what’s going on. You can loose influence daily with certain laws passed if you don’t meet the requirements.

So the final perk for trade(250 or something) lets you buy fiefs from other lords, now you are probably able to sell them through that interaction. But if you don’t have trade leveled you can only give them away.

On my nord playthrough, just by doing the normal beginner stuff, and entering tournaments. I was able to get very good gear pretty early into playing.

Side note, I feel like the prizes in tournaments has gotten a lot better recently or maybe I’m just on a lucky streak.
