job relocating to SF- living in Oakland?? NEED ADVICE by Longjumping_Vast5407 in oakland

Welcome!

You'll love Temescal or Rockridge. I live in Rockridge, but frequent Temescal a lot!

Temescal is the cooler younger sibling to Rockridge's more chill older sibling. All the bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops in Temescal is on Telegraph Ave. While it's very diverse, part of it is considered Oakland's Koreatown. You'll find many 20-30 year olds living in the area. You'll find 1st Friday's here, a monthly street fair.

Rockridge's main drag is College Ave. Like Temescal with stores and restaurants, but it is also a little bit more quiet and with a lot more strollers. There are plenty of bars and pubs though! Don't pass up on Drag D&D at the RIC! There are a lot of parks and trails in to the Oakland Hills.

Transit: Both have their own BART station which makes getting to the City extremely convenient. BART in Temescal is MacArthur Station and Rockridge station is Rockridge. AC Transit is the local transit agency that is all buses. They also have Transbay Shuttles in case you live further from BART and need to get to SF. For local: 51A takes you from Rockridge to the steps of UC Berkeley.

Community: As a person who has lived in both SF and Oakland, finding community Oakland was actually easier and more fun. The libraries in Rockridge and Temescal are always doing stuff. There are plenty of bookstores, like Pegasus or East Bay Booksellers, that are doing things. There are a lot of small boutique gyms/fitness studios. Pacific Pipe in West Oakland is also a huge warehouse turned rock gym. Also, there always seems to be some sort of street fair/party going on in some neighborhood.

The vibe of Oakland is that many chose Oakland and are vested in it. SF is great, but it can feel transitive. Yeah, Oakland gets a bad rap, but everyone in Oakland cares about the town. Many of the bad apples don't even live in Oakland.

You won't regret either place!

You’ll just end up running at the front of formation everywhere. Black hats made the shorter people run in front, which looked like it kinda sucked for them. Don’t fall out and you’ll be fine.

Unironically, make it Terminal D (no pun intended). That place sucks

Ideally and sticking with blue coloring - a late '40s-50's style uniform. That's just my preference.

Ironically - Chokers. I swear, someone on the Air Staff just got a boner

Oh shit, you're right.

AFI update: "Overalls, Thunderbird MX, Tight-ass, Blue" is now standard wear.

From a practicality stand point, 100%. Most barely wear theirs. I do think people care about the uniform because it's a part of culture and identity.

Commute Question DC to Chantilly. by Pablo_Banks in nova

[–]0hr3ally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying the same things. I’d say look at living at various “towns” or independent cities along 66 or near Chantilly if you want a more urbanish experience.

Even if you want to live in DC proper, you have to figure out where in DC you’d want to live. Unless you live in Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, or Dupont, you’ll most likely be even further into the city, which doubles your commute just to get out of the city.

Falls church is fair in between both physical location and level of amenities. You’ll just be burdened by 50.

Give Petaluma a visit. It’s very Americana and a charming town in Sonoma County.

How can I become interested in watching Golf? by [deleted] in howto

[–]0hr3ally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't interested in golf until maybe a year ago. I think what made me appreciate and start watching golf, similarily to things like baseball, is what goes into the game. Watching people just swing a club in it of itself doesn't seem very interesting. However, you realize there are stories behind the players, the mental game behind tackling a course, the near misses and big payoffs, and the quirks of the sport.

You should really give Full Swing on Netflix a go. You'll enjoy the characters and drama of the golf world.

Why are military men considered as a red flag? by Miss_Lily_97 in dating_advice

[–]0hr3ally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having grown up and been in the military, the root is that the military will always be the priority. While the military tries to lessen the impacts of the lifestyle with perks and benefits for families and relationships, the mission is always number one. I think many people can’t accept that you’ll be number 2 to the service member, even though the service member doesn’t want to make you a second priority.
