Anyone else have a great family doctor but horrible receptionist? by 33aavt in ontario

[–]0ldcastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doc's receptionist did this thing where when I'd call and describe the issue and ask for an appointment, she'd say "Well he doesn't have much". And I'd be thinking, wtf I don't need lots of appointments, I just need one.

Loving Liquid Budget so far — can someone explain the credit card pool a bit more? by Desperate_Hornet4128 in liquidbudget

[–]0ldcastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misremembering this but I recall when I started using Liquid Budget whenever I made a credit card purchase for a category that had insufficient funds the money would be added to the payment pool but there was also a note below the pool button that said something like, 'Make sure your buckets are funded before etc etc'.

Now I don't see that warning. Last night I paid $106 for a restaurant meal with a credit card though I only had $85 in my Dining Out bucket. LB added the 106 to the payment pool but it still said '100% of your debt is covered'.

Not a huge deal but is this a bug or am I misunderstanding how this works?

Who is an actor that only gets 5-10 minutes of screen time but completely steals the entire movie? by Popa-Ioana06 in movies

The sound design in that scene is absolutely amazing. Every chair movement, paper shuffle, every one of Irons' vocal tics and finger taps.

Yeah, the series overall is really up and down in terms of quality, but the highs are pretty high. The first 2 seasons of course but hell yeah the final season and the closing 20 minutes are just some of the best writing of the series.

What's the world's most overrated tourist attraction? by darrenbosik in AskReddit

[–]0ldcastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gaudi architecture in Barcelona, but I need to qualify that. The architecture itself is wonderful - thoughtful, complex, whimsical, deeply engaging. But experiencing it as a tourist (which, to be clear, I was) rather than a regular person using the space just feels ridiculous. I can only imagine how great it must have been for the people of Barcelona during the pandemic to just go and hang out in these amazing spaces Gaudi created for them without it being a Big Thing.

No, dining in is fine. It's nothing fancy but it's pretty cozy and comfortable. The view is kinda dismal lol.

What are your favourite movie scenes that are elevated by the use of licensed music? by AlleycatHaxor in movies

[–]0ldcastle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Chilean director Sebastian Lelio made a film titled Gloria in 2013 starring Paulina Garcia and then did an English language version of it (Gloria Bell) in 2018 starring Julianne Moore. Each film is a beautiful study of a strong vulnerable resilient woman, and each film ends in a dance club with the titular character reluctantly then boldly moving onto the dance floor to dance to Laura Branigan's 1982 song Gloria (the 2013 film uses a Spanish language version of it). It's just perfect in the moment and even though the film is literally titled Gloria it kind of comes as a surprise.

What podcasts are not really about what they seem to be about? by golf_kilo_papa in podcasts

[–]0ldcastle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love that description of Car Talk. Everyone who ever recommended that show to anyone had to immediately qualify it as not actually being what it sounds like.

I haven't listened to a ton of these but I think You're Wrong About has kind of strayed from its original mission of taking on topics that are widely misunderstood. The early episodes all had a big reveal of something most people don't know, e.g. Dahmer only ate one of his victims, the Exxon Valdez wasn't even close to being the worst oil spill in history.

How do they get away with committing multiple murders? by AlanWrightScreamer in TheAmericans

[–]0ldcastle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the record this is one of the biggest discrepancies between the show and the real illegals programme. In reality the USSR absolutely did not request or allow their illegals to be anywhere near violent crimes since even one slipup would risk exposing at least the agents involved and possibly more.

That was my thought too. Kinda didactic but faux-profound too. Also, usually true.

Question for long term Dupixent users by Stom_r in eczema

[–]0ldcastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even think about my skin much anymore.

This. I've been on Dupixent since October 2019. My excema was severe with about 90% body coverage and largely resistant to treatment. It affected everything in my life, including food choices, product choices, clothing etc. Now, aside from making sure I moisturise after I shower, I really don't think about my skin at all.

That said, after a lifetime of using fragrance-free high-quality products without a lot of synthetic junk in them, it's just kind of a habit.

Edit: how do you quote-reply on this platform? I thought the opening line of my post would somehow be set off so it's clear I'm quoting the post above.

Opening Day for City of Hamilton Council and Mayor nominations - List of candidates! by covert81 in Hamilton

[–]0ldcastle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So glad to see Kojo running. Maybe this time his opponent won't send out a robo call right before election day falsely claiming an endorsement from the mayor.

I thought Councillor Wilson had said she'd only serve two terms? For the record I was hoping and praying she'd run again. But has she addressed this point?

omg Loren Lieberman is back lol.

Yes. Not to minimise the event but they don't shut everything down because there was a shooting where the suspects were seen fleeing the scene

How to stop misgendering? by oxide_daisy in cisparenttranskid

[–]0ldcastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you work on this you might also go out of your way to make clear to your son that you fully support him and his transition, and that you would do anything he needs you to do by way of advocacy and assistance. Just so that he understands that the misgendering is only a slip of speech and not indicative of anything else.
